From the Deputy Principal Reading The focus for this Familygram is Self Monitoring. Self-monitoring is being aware of your own thinking when you read. A really important part of self-monitoring is knowing when you have stopped understanding what you have read. It may be that you are not sure of what a word, sentence or even a paragraph means. If you can recognise when this happens, you can use a strategy such as rereading to fix it. Questions you can use at home to help your child/ren Self Monitor as they read includes:

The author mentions..., can you remember much about that? Will you go back and reread that part to help you understand that part?

Do you understand what that sentence means? Will you go back and read it aloud slowly and see if that helps?

It looks like you’ve lost concentration; will you go back and reread that page?

Do you know what... means. Will you go back and reread?

Do you get the paragraph? Perhaps you need to go back and reread that part?

The author mentions..., but if you can't remember much about that continue reading and see if the next sentence helps it make sense. Did that help?

What does that word mean? Please read on and read it aloud slowly. Did that help?

It looks like you’re not sure what... means. Perhaps you should read it again a bit more slowly to see if it makes sense?

Do you get the paragraph? Could you please read it slowly and try and understand what the author is trying to say?

Do you understand that part? Perhaps you need to read it slowly and try and create a picture in your mind to help you understand that part?

How can you work out that word? Could you try sounding it out?

What could that word be? Could you use sounding it out to work it out?

That’s a tricky word, I wonder if sounding it out might help to work it out?

Can you see a small word inside the big word?

Can you connect any sounds together to help you work out the word?

You know part of this word, what do you know? It will help you work out the word.

Do you know another word that’s like this word?

What is another word that you know that you can use to transfer to this tricky word?

You know another word like this word. What is it? How will it help you work out this word?

Can you transfer what you know about… to help you work out this tricky word?

How can you work out this tricky word? Where could you look to help you work it out?

Do you need Google to work this word out?

Could a friend/teacher help you with this word?

Writing The whole school has now been taken through all 7 elements of the ‘7 Steps to Writing’ Program. It has not only been pleasing to see the improvements the students have made with the technical skills of writing, but also with the growing confidence they have shown in having-a-go as a writer. Students will now over the next 2 weeks complete a writing piece, either narrative or persuasive that highlights all of the skills they have learnt. 2016 Voting for School Captains Year 5 students have been involved in the leadership process for 2016 School Captains. Students who moved through the nomination process, then took part in an interview. Students were then short listed after this interview, for the speech stage. Speeches were held in the hall on Friday in front of the Yr 4-5 cohorts. The captains and vice captains will be announced on Tuesday 1st December. Congratulations to the following students who delivered awe-inspiring speeches last week, they are to be commended for their efforts. Isabelle Ava Aveli

Premier’s Reading Challenge Congratulations to all the students who took part in this year’s Premier’s Reading Challenge. The Premier's Reading Challenge is an annual statewide initiative for state and non-state schools. The Premier's Reading Challenge celebrated its 10th anniversary this year. The Premier's Reading Challenge is not a competition but a way to encourage students to develop a love of reading for life. Through the challenge children and students are given an opportunity to develop their appreciation of the English language and are encouraged to explore and enjoy a wide range of literary texts. For a student to successfully complete the Premier's Reading Challenge they must read or experience the number of books indicated in the table below. Experiencing a book can include classroom or at home activities such as shared reading, listening and reading along with a book, or being read to.

Year level Number of books

Prep - Year 2 Read or experience 20 books

Years 3 - 4 20 books

Years 5 - 9 15 books

The requirement for Year 5 through to Year 9 students to read 15 books rather than 20 books acknowledges that older students are likely to select longer, more complex books that may take them longer to read. Students are encouraged to select a range of fiction and non-fiction books suited to their reading ability. The reading period has now finished and Certificates of Achievement have been handed out to students. Due to the high number of certificates, as approximately 150 students completed the challenge, they were handed out to students in their class, but on Assembly this Tuesday, 24th November, the efforts of all these students will be acknowledged as they will stand up in front of their peers and be applauded for their achievement. Events happening this week: A number of special activities and events are planned for the students this week, please see below for details: Spinal Injuries Awareness Talks Monday 23rd November (in the hall)

Classroom News Prep News

We have had a busy few weeks with our Prep Transition Days. The Prep buddies have done a great job welcoming our

new families. On our last day we performed the Very Noisy Bear by Nick Bland. The teachers dressed up as characters

form the story. Mrs Hicks and Mrs Bauer dressed up as Sheep, Zebra, Lion and Moose. Can you guess who the noisy

bear was?

Maths and Measurement We have been learning about capacity. We made ice cream cones and filled them with “ice cream” and compared the sizes and shapes of the cones to predict which one might hold the most and the least.

We have also been learning about mass. We remembered the ways we can compare the mass of objects – balance

scales, hefting, see saws and we worked in pairs to test objects to see which was heaviest and lightest. We made

amazing paper planes and experimented with how they flew with and without a paperclip weight.

End of the year Even though the year is drawing to an end, please continue working at home on reading and sight words. It’s been great to see the children grow in their ability and confidence over the year and particularly recently. It would be great to do some daily reading over the holidays to build on the skills already gained and make a great start for year 1. Thank you all for your support this year. We have had a great year.

Year 1 News It’s coming up to that time of year when we finalise assessments and complete report cards. Although this has been a busy time, the Year 1 students have shown great levels of commitment and resilience. Over the past few weeks we have been working hard on the seven steps to writing, in particular Dynamic Dialogue and Ending with Impact. Both 1A and 1B have also been developing stamina in independent reading time where our goal is to achieve 15 minutes straight, the students are definitely on their way to success. For the next few weeks in Maths both classes with will working on concepts that have been recognised as focus areas to improve before embarking into year 2 next year. If families are thinking about leaving early before the holidays it would be greatly appreciated if there was sufficient notice given to the office. It is with great sadness that 1B said goodbye to Miss Kilpatrick as she has completed her time here and preparing herself to take on her own class next year. GOOD LUCK! Julie Tayyah 1A, Kerry Lees 1B. Classroom teachers. Year 2 news

We have been working hard over the past few weeks finishing our assessment items .The children have produced

some great writing using descriptive noun groups and correct punctuation.

For the rest of the term we will be practicing and revising skills learned throughout the year. The weather is getting

hotter so please remind your children to drink plenty of water. We would like the children for the last few weeks to

just learn spelling and do reading for homework.

Reminder that library borrowing has now finished for the year and we are asking that all books now be returned to the

library. A swimming note has gone home with your child letting you know what they will need to bring for swimming

for the next few weeks.

We have had a great term and we wish you all well in the future.

Libby and Sarsha

3A News We had a very informative visit to the Maleny Historical Village recently, thanks to all of the wonderful volunteers who were there on the day. We went through Priscilla Cottage, which was the original home of the Bryce family, early settlers in the district. The Cottage is set up as it would have been in the past, including, bedroom furniture, lounge room and the kitchen etc We also looked at lots of old farming machinery and a myriad of other artifacts. We were fortunate to see butter being made from fresh cream and then we ate it spread on bread, a great hit! Thanks again to all the dedicated volunteers at the site and parent helpers who accompanied us on the walk to and from the Village. Swimming will conclude in Week 9 of the term, Tuesday the first of December for 3A. I wish you all a very peaceful and fulfilling holiday with your child (ren). Kind Regards, Anne Coogan 3 / 4 News The students have been very busy creating body percussion routines for their art assessment and are using hands, body and feet to make interesting sounds that follow a rhythm. They will be presenting these to our parents at our end of year presentation. In English we have completed some compelling persuasive letters using emotive language to state our point of view on important issues. This last week we have been reading a Quest novel called Victor’s Quest. We know that in stories like this the main character has to face many challenges and often becomes braver at the end. We have been looking at the features of a quest novel and have made a list of other stories and movies that are based on a quest. Last Thursday we enjoyed the science show from Questacon. Kind Regards Lou and Trish

Chappy’s Thought SLOW DOWN

At this time of the year, with so many parties and functions to attend it can sometimes feel like life is a runaway train.

I’ve been reminding myself of the importance to just stop and breathe. To remain in the present moment when there

are so many demands and expectations upon a person can be extremely difficult. I have been catching myself living in

the future instead of being present in the present. I just want to encourage anyone who might be struggling with this

same issue to just remain calm and be present in the present. I heard someone say once, that if the problem you are

facing right now, is not going to matter in a year’s time, then it is probably not worth getting stressed and anxious

about it now. Enjoy being with your kids and take time out to play…it does wonders for your soul and mind, not to

mention the relationships you are investing in.

These next few weeks will be spent doing art and craft activities. If there are any parents who love being involved and

especially love art and craft please get involved. I would love your help! Also if there are any parents of year 6

students who are interested in a camp, there is one coming up on Monday the 14th December. It is called,

SCHOOLZOUT. It will be a fun packed week and ends with a trip to Movie world. If you would like more information,

please come and see me. Have a wonderful week.

P & C News As the school year draws to a close, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our wonderful P&C members and many other volunteers, including the Tuckshop and Uniform Shop, who have contributed so much of their time and energy to our school community this year. I'd particularly like to thank our hard working Executive and extraordinary Principal, John Byrne, for their dedicated leadership and partnership. A saying I saw recently that I think sums up the work of the P&C beautifully is, "volunteers don't necessarily have the most time, but they have the most heart". And thank you for the fantastic support of our parents, staff and broader community, who have played a vital role in helping us achieve our goals. We set the ambitious target of raising $20,000 this year, and I am delighted to announce that after the Cancer Council marquee grant, Mother's day Stall, Beefy's Pie Drive, Sports Days, Squaring the Wheel performance, Discos, Paddington Movie Matinee, Father's Day Stall, School Concert, Chocolate Drive, Country Fair and IGA CBC funds, we have raised close to $28,000 this year. Over $10,000 of this was raised from the Country Fair. About $20,000 this year has been donated back to the school this year to support various priorities including new laptops, the Year 6 Canberra trip, four large sports marquees and representative sport students. And at the last meeting, the P&C voted to provide another $10,000 towards a much needed improvement of the acoustics in the School Hall. Next P&C Meeting – Wednesday 10 February 2016 at 6.30pm in the School Library. All parents welcome. Anita Edmonds P&C President [email protected]

P&C Tuckshop News Please note that the Tuckshop will be closed for cleaning and stocktake on the last day of school - Friday 11 December. Thank you to our Tuckshop Convenors, Gunnar and Kate, for the fantastic service they have provided our students and families throughout the year, and of course to the many committed volunteers who support them. Tuckshop days for 2016 - Tue/Thu/Fri The Tuckshop will be open three days from the start of 2016 - Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. The transition of Yr 7 students to high school this year has had a considerable impact on income. Also, with more Yr 6 students leaving this year than prep students starting, and our Tuckshop open more days than recommended for a school of our size, it was necessary to cut back hours to be financially viable. Wednesday Brekky Special (until end of Term 4) – Bacon and Egg Muffin - $3.00 New Friday Special – Hot Dog with cheese - $4.00 Flexi Schools is our preferred ordering system and is simple and easy to use. To register go to www.flexischools.com.au. Can you help at the Tuckshop? – only 3 hours a month. At least 2 volunteers per day are needed to help Tuckshop Convenors Kate and Gunnar. Training is provided and you can do a trial to see if you like it. To find out more, drop by or call Kate or Gunnar at the Tuckshop on 5499 8318 or email Kate - [email protected] . Community News Discover Guiding Guiding provides a values based dynamic and flexible non-formal educational program for girls and young women in a fun and supportive girl’s only environment. Girls develop leadership skills and a sense of personal responsibility and a shared purpose to make the world a better place.

Guides discover, decide, plan, participate and develop their program to suit their Unit with the guidance of an Adult Leader. Guiding activities vary from week to week and ensure the positive Guiding motto's of "Be Prepared" and 'Guides can do anything.'

If you join Girl Guides between 5-17 you will be a youth member and placed into a Unit.

Units are structured so girls are with their own age group.

Unit meetings usually take place once a week during the Queensland school term for 2 hours within a local hut or community space.

Units have opportunities to participate in many programs outside Unit meetings, for example: helping run community events, embrace the outdoors through camping and other adventurous activities, enjoy social outings with other Units and even learn how to save a life.

Inspire Girls! Unit Leaders and Assistant Leaders Required Unit Leaders and Assistant Unit Leaders drive weekly meetings, helping the girls to plan activities, achieve goals, and have fun. You don't need to have been a Guide yourself. Training is provided

Make a difference to girls’ lives

Learn new skills and develop existing ones

Be part of a team of like-minded women

Give your CV a boost by developing management and leadership skills

Develop lasting friendships with other Leaders

Take action on issues which affect the lives of women in Australia and overseas

Have lots of fun! for more information please visit guidesqld.org and girlguides.org.au Please call 0407146917 or 0425850360 for information about your local unit.
