Date: April 3, 2017 Dear Parents and Guardians of 8C, Please be informed that ONE student from 8C was diagnosed Conjunctivitis (pinkeye) today. Conjunctivitis is an inflammation of the conjunctiva, the protective membrane that lines the inner eyelids and covers the outer part of the eyeballs. The most common form is acute infectious conjunctivitis which is mostly caused by bacteria and viruses. Clinically, bacterial and viral conjunctivitis are very similar. Both eyes are often affected but the symptoms usually start in one eye. The discharge is thick, whitish or yellowish in bacterial conjunctivitis, and watery in viral conjunctivitis. Symptoms include tearing, foreign body sensation, itchiness, pain, swelling and redness of the eyes, and sensitivity to light. The incubation period is 1 - 3 days after exposure for bacterial conjunctivitis; 1 - 12 days for viral conjunctivitis. Conjunctivitis is usually mild and self-limiting, recovery occurs in 1 to 2 weeks' time if properly treated. Infection can occur at all ages, however children under 5 are most frequently affected. Conjunctivitis is highly contagious and is transmitted through direct contact with discharge from the eyes, or indirectly through contaminated fingers, clothings, and use of contaminated articles, such as shared towels and topical eye medications. In order to prevent the spread of Conjunctivitis, the school would suggest the following interventions: - Keep your child home if he/she is showing symptoms of Conjunctivitis. - Maintain good personal hygiene, handwashing before and after contact with eyes. - Avoid hand-eye contact. - Do not share towels and other personal items. - Avoid sharing eyedrops, eye medicines, or other items that may come into contact with the eyes. If you have any health-related concerns regarding the class, please do not hesitate to contact me. Yours sincerely, Tracy Chow Upper School Nurse Phone: 22406362 Email: [email protected]
