We have events for most every interest in motor sports. If you don’t see something you like, contact a Chapter Officer with suggestions for new events. Our goal is simple - Provide BMW owners and their families with a wide variety of events, encourage greater participation by spouses and young drivers and schedule “fun” events to relax and unwind from the daily pace at work.

Some events are announced at the last minute on our Yahoo Group called Das Kummet. Please sign up to join this group if you have not already done so. Instructions appear on this page.

Listed below are chapter events scheduled for the next few months. Events shown in italics are held by other organizations that our members regularly attend and may be of interest to you. The club’s next and last quarterly meal of 2010 (previously called quarterly dinners) will be held at my absolutely favorite restaurant in Virginia Beach, Rudee’s on the Inlet. The owner, Carter Turpin, is also a long time club member and drives a 2007, 335i convertible with the retractable hardtop. This was one of the first ordered and purchased from Checkered Flag BMW when they were first available for delivery.

For those of you that have never been to Rudee’s before, you are truly missing out. Most of the year, they have their outdoor

cabana open with gliding picnic tables and I never miss an opportunity to take an out of town guest here or to meet up with a friend for lunch. Being a Virginia Beach favorite, Rudee’s Restaurant & Raw Bar overlooking Rudee’s Inlet, serves fresh seafood, overstuffed sandwiches and burgers, juicy steaks and icy cold beverages inside their Coastal inspired dining room and outside in their cabana. They serve lunch, dinner, early birds and Sunday brunch.

Rudee’s welcomed its first guest on March 17, 1983, in what was originally designed to be a bait

and tackle shop. Since that day, Rudee’s has grown to become one of the most popular restaurants and night spots at the Beach. Housed in a replica of an authentic Coast Guard station, the Restaurant & Raw Bar has grown to include a Sunroom and Cabana on the Sun Deck over the water. Fresh seafood, specialty drinks and the beautiful sunsets over Rudee’s Inlet will keep you going back again and again and again.

So please, come out and join us on Saturday, November 13, 2010, at 6:30 pm; in the Sunroom at 227 Mediterranean Avenue, Virginia Beach, VA 23451 (757) 425-1777; www.rudees.com.

RSVP’s are required for this event no later than Thursday, November 11, 2010. You can RSVP by calling Cat Black at 727-287-1753 or e-mail [email protected] or on our Facebook Page, Tidewater BMW CCA Activities Page.

Have you ever purchased a product & been disappointed in the quality and/or the function? Haven’t we all. Below are some products I have used and found to be outstanding in every way.

MatLoc floor mat retainers. These are a substantial alligator type clip with a long stick pin to firmly locate your floor mats. Newer BMWs have their own proprietary retainers, so no worry when using BMW mats. For older BMWs or those who have switched to after-market mats, these are the best way to keep the mats in place. Priced at $8 for a pair of clips from www.ggbailey.com. Shipping is $10, so a multiple unit buy makes sense.

GE Nighthawk Platinum bulbs. These are advertised as “+90%” output bulbs at the same wattage as standard bulbs. The higher output generally is achieved by improved manufacturing tolerances and higher operating temperature of the filament. Inevitably the operating life of higher output bulbs will be shorter than standard bulbs (450 hrs vice 850 by GE spec), but it is a small consideration to me in this case. Compared to Philips higher output “+30%” 9006 bulbs, the GE’s offer a stunning improvement. These bulbs are available in all commonly used configurations (9006, 9005, 9004, 9007, etc.) Note that the “+90%” bulbs use the “Platinum” nomenclature whereas the Nighthawk Sport are lower rated output. Available through Amazon.com for about $51 per pair.

Aluminum Jack Stands. I have several sets of jack stands but only one set is totally confidence-inspiring when under a vehicle. Recently I had the unpleasant experience of watching the stamped steel jack stands purchased at Sears some 40 years ago starting to deform while trying to support our pickumup truck. Into the trash they went – no more cheap jack stands! The replacements are Big

Red aluminum jack stands that I found by accident on the Home Depot web site (not available in the store). These are rated at 3 tons and have a wide, stable base along with a 5-hole height adjustment covering a 10.6 to 15.5-inch height range. The moveable post is supported by a steel locking pin with a chain. The price is $80 a set for some very nice hardware that is almost too pretty to use. Recently I found what appears to be the same product available from the Tire Rack for $70. (Prices do not include shipping.)

Redline Water Remover. Over the years I always have used a few ounces of Redline Water Remover mixed with Redline SI-1 fuel injector cleaner when treating the car’s fuel system. Recently I filled up my wife’s car on a Sunday evening & drove the ½-mile home. All was well when I turned off the ignition. The next morning the car sputtered, spit & jerked. I could barely keep it running. What the !@#&%!! had happened overnight? The only thing that made sense to me was water in the gas. Even the thought of draining the tank & whatever else might be necessary was more than a Monday morning should involve. I turned off the ignition & poured a full bottle of Redline Water Remover into the tank & then restarted the car. Within a minute it was running smoother & after less than 5 minutes it was running fine. There is a bottle of Water Remover in the trunk of both cars now.

Autumn ColorsDriving EventA “Poker Run” to Benefit Richard Cooke

For the past few years I’ve tried to provide a ‘Bimmer-quality’ drive through the area countryside to enjoy the many colors of the fall! Well, I’m trying to do that again – this time, back along a prior path on the south side – but in reverse from the previous run! We will assemble between 09:30 and 10:00 for brunch in Franklin at Fred’s Restaurant (107 South Main Street; 757.562.2919)! At approximately 10:45, after a “guaranteed” hearty meal, we will depart Franklin for a drive along the Chowan River, through the countryside of Chowan and Gates counties, and finish our run along the Great Dismal Swamp and back into western Chesapeake at the Hampton Roads Airport (5172 West Military Highway).

This event will also serve as a “Poker Run” to benefit one of our own. Richard Cooke, son of BMW CCA Members Matthew and Lindsey Cooke, is a 19 month old little boy who was born with a very, very rare genetic liver disorder called argininosuccinic aciduria, or ASA for short (Ref: http://www.nucdf.org/). His disorder causes high amounts of ammonia in his blood and can cause developmental delays and brain damage; both of which he has suffered. He takes special medications mixed with special feeding formulas every day. He has a stomach

g-tube in order to pump medicines in him. As of this past summer, Richard had been admitted to the hospital (CHKD in Norfolk and Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, D.C.) approximately 21 times of the 42 times he has made trips to the see his doctor. The talk during the spring months was the possibility of putting Richard on the liver transplant list to help prevent further brain damage to free him of about 95% of the illness. He was placed on the transplant list June 18, 2009. We were told to keep a bag and gas money on hand at all times. This past July, Richard received his much needed liver transplant, and is being monitored closely for his body’s reaction.

The BMW community has proven to be as kind and giving more so than one would expect; thanks to many at www.mye28.com. Matt and Lindsey are reaching out to the local chapter for help in the form of fundraising for Richard. His procedure should be covered by insurance but future special anti-rejection medicines and services may not be covered. Also, the trip from Norfolk to Washington

can drain money very quickly.

So put this Sunday event, NOV 7th, on your calendar and plan to enjoy the day!

I need to provide Fred’s a final count by THU, November 4th, so please RSVP by then to Sam-I-Am via email ([email protected]) or phone (757.435.5715), or to the Activities Committee via email ([email protected]) or via Facebook (http://www.facebook.com “Tidewater BMW CCA Activities Page”).

Thanks for your continued support and we’re all looking forward to sharing

the day together!

2011 Annual BanquetYes, it is that time of year again! It’s time for us to get together for one of our largest and best events of the year, our annual banquet. Last year, we set record numbers; so once again, I’m pleased to announce that the club will be returning to The Historic Chamberlin Hotel, (2 Fenwick Rd. Hampton, VA 23651, (757) 637-7200) on Saturday, January 29, 2011, for yet another record breaking event!

Fortunately, we learned a lot last year and listened to your suggestions to make this event even better for its members. So, we are happy to inform you that the club has arranged a block of rooms at the Crown Plaza Hotel (700 Settlers Landing Road, Hampton, VA 23669; 757-727-9700) for $89.00 per night to include breakfast. In addition, we have arranged shuttle service from the Crown Plaza Hotel to the Chamberlin Hotel from 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm and back from 10:30 pm – 11:30 pm (there will be two (2) trips each way, both time periods).

As usual, our Chapter is subsidizing over half of the buffet meal costs (I love it when that happens!). A cash bar social hour with h’ordourves begins at 6:30 pm with a buffet dinner at 7:30 pm. One of the best compliments we received last year was regarding the food and menu selection, thus I present to you our menu choice of the evening …… Field Green Salad, Crab Cakes, N.Y. Strip Steak, Sautéed Green Beans, Red Bliss Mashed Potatoes, and mouth watering Carrot Cake!

After dinner, we will raffle off donated door prizes provided by a variety of advertisers, local merchants, shops, and members (and yes, based on your feedback, we will be more selective this year). There will be some brief announcements along with a slide show of the events we hosted in 2010 and best of all; there will be wonderful people and intriguing conversations.

Should you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to call Cat Black / 757-287-1753 or email [email protected], but we don’t stop there, you can get us on Facebook now too, just go to Tidewater BMW CCA Activities Page.

IMPORTANT NOTE: The hotel holds us to specific guarantees, so it is imperative that you RSVP for yourself and any guest and PRE PAY no later than Saturday, January 22, 2011. The Historic Chamberlin HotelThe Chamberlin Hotel boasts a rich and colorful history. Located within the nation’s oldest military base, Fort Monroe, the original hotel to occupy the Chamberlin site was called The Hygeia. Named after the Greek goddess of health, the Hygeia offered well-heeled guests the opportunity to experience a refreshing and invigorating vacation. Built on this magnificent spot surrounded by the Chesapeake Bay, the Hygeia opened its doors in 1820. The hotel welcomed a steady stream of important visitors, including Edgar Allen Poe, who recited “The Raven” and “Annabel Lee” on the Hygeia’s porch in September 1849, just one month before he died.

After serving as a hospital during the Civil War, the Hygeia was torn down. Another hotel was placed on the site, followed closely by the first Chamberlin Hotel.

After a fire in 1920, the beautiful and dramatic Chamberlin Hotel still standing today was built in its place. In its earliest days, the hotel drew

visitors with promises of an ideal climate, due to the cool Chesapeake breezes. The indoor swimming pool was described as “so perfectly ventilated and radiant with sunlight that you are really bathing out-of-doors.” The formal dining room provided breathtaking vistas of the Chesapeake Bay, treating travelers to a feast for the eyes, as well as the palette.

Today, The Chamberlin is proud to offer residents the same breathtaking views, the same delicious dining opportunities, and enhanced services for health, recreation, and wellness. Building on the tradition that began with the Hygeia in 1820, the Chamberlin is proud of both its history and its renovation as a premiere senior living community.

We are very excited to have this year’s annual banquet at this historic landmark and we truly hope that all of you will join us for an evening filled with lots of fun, wonderful food, fantastic views, great people, and be the first to hear what the Activities Committee has in store for 2011! Don’t delay, because you won’t want to miss out on this one!

Best-Ever Ladies’ Clinic Tech Session at Larry’s Import Center!By David Meyr

Okay, so since this was Tidewater BMW CCA’s first ever and Ladies’ Clinic, it was the default “Best Session Ever.” But why quibble? Larry’s Import Center provided a great venue and excellent entertainment, good answers to important questions, and Bill Cooper did a snappy product demo of various “Blue Chem” products that surprised even the technicians with what they did (no endorsement implied, by the way, just a personal observation). The participating Club members got top-notch information about BMWs, tasty pizza and drink, and the friendly discussions that are part of Tidewater BMW CCA’s success.

The Session was held on a glorious Saturday morning on October 2nd. Larry Woodhouse, the owner of Larry’s Import Center, Karen, Bill and all the crew went to the maximum to make the Club members feel welcome! The spacious, very complete and up-to-date facilities were sparkling clean. A raffle helped Tidewater BMW CCA support the Southeastern Virginia Food Bank with $40 in cash, and many cans of food were collected. Larry stressed that he’d like to have a greater level of interaction with the Tidewater BMW CCA. “These are great cars, and we’re dedicated to ensuring that the owners get both great advice and service from our technicians, and ideas and answers on how to get the most out of their cars. You guys are welcome any time,” said Larry.

Larry’s Import Center also featured Chris Kettner, “The Specialist,” host of The Specialist Hour on WYRM Radio (AM1110 on your Hampton Roads radio dial), who set up his equipment to provide the background music. For our next session at Larry’s

Import Center, it may be possible to have Chris record short interviews with Club personnel to be later broadcast during The Specialist Hour. The interviews could discuss and promote Club member’s businesses, Tidewater BMW CCA Club activities, and talk about the joy of driving the Ultimate Driving Machine.

A survey from “Surveymonkey.com” was distributed to Club members on Facebook. The questions dealt with what the Ladies wanted to have discussed during their Tech Session Clinic, and the responses helped guide Larry and his technicians in their talks and demonstrations. Another survey will be out soon (perhaps by the time this goes to print) to ask how the Ladies’ Clinic Tech Sessions

might be made even better. To increase access to these surveys, the next one will probably come out on both the Club’s Webpage (accessible to everyone) and the Tidewater

BMW CCA Facebook page.

The Tech Sessions are an important and free part of your benefits of being a member of Tidewater BMW CCA. The Tech Session Coordinator and the Activities Committee are continually working hard to find ways to make the Tech Sessions, and ALL Club activities

more useful, more fun, and more responsive to what you want out of your Club membership. We all look forward to seeing you at the upcoming activities, and we look forward to having another Tech Session at Larry’s Import Center!

www.tidewaterbmwcca.org November • December 2010 - das Kummet16

It was a late Saturday morning when I got a text from an unknown source ragging on me about not signing up for the upcoming high speed track event at NCCAR (North Carolina Center for Automotive Research). So, when Cat got home from the club’s Board & Activity Committee meeting, I asked her if

she knew anything about that text. “Yes”, she replied; “Chris Triplett sent that to you and everyone wants to know why you are not attending the event. Everyone said that this is your kind of event and they want to see your car (0 TO 60) on the track.” “Hmmmmm, I replied. I will think about it.”

So, being the research junky that I am, I decided to make a few phone calls and jump on the internet. It really didn’t take that much convincing

for me to sign myself up for a day of fun and speed. And once I made this decision, I started to get a little excited over the anticipation. Work has been a bear lately and having put in some crazy hours, this seemed like it would be the perfect way to relieve some built up stress.

A quick trip to Atlantic Autowerks (www.atlaticautowerks.com) for a vehicle inspection; reservations at the Hampton Inn in Roanoke Rapids, NC; find someone to let me borrow a helmet (thanks Bob B. & Sam W.) and persuading Cat to wash my car that Friday, is all it took for me to be ready to hit the track. My plan was to get off work early that Friday and get on the road before all of the weekend traffic. However, work and issues had something else in mind and we didn’t get on the road until 5ish. The drive was quite relaxing as most of it was spent on route 58. The sun shined brightly the whole way and it took exactly 2 hours to reach our destination. There were several club members already there when we arrived and I was able to check in and register, as well as, get my

vehicle through tech inspection before they closed for the evening. Now, this being my first track event, I was quite shocked when they told me to remove everything from the car and that included floor mats, but I think Cat was more shocked than anybody. Since we had gone to the track before we checked into the hotel, the car and trunk were completely filled. It was a hilarious site to see all these cars pull up and start unpacking their stuff. Each car required 2 parking spaces, one to park the car and the other to park all of their belongings (bags, coolers, chairs, floor mats, etc.). It was very evident, the differences between us track virgins and those that had been through this process before and I got a little chuckle as I scanned over the parking lot.

Several of us agreed to meet for a late dinner, so Cat and I went off to check into the hotel. After we got settled in, the consensus was for several us to meet at a steakhouse right down the street from our hotel. As usual, the conversation and people were refreshing and details of what was to come were discussed. Since this is a new track and no one had been there before, there was a lot of anticipation and excitement about the speeds, the shape of the track, and the number of participants we had. In case you didn’t know, members from the Porsche Club of America – First Settlers Region Chapter (PCA-FSR) and some members from the BMW Tarheel Chapter, joined in on the fun to make this a large participating event. I liked the idea of not only seeing how my car handled on the track, but to be able to test it up against other makes and models as well. After dinner, everyone headed back to their rooms to get a good night sleep before a long and fun filled day.

The morning came quick and early, but the day looked to be absolutely beautiful. After hooking up my IV of coffee and loading up the car, we were off to race ….. I feel the need for speed!! The day started with a safety meeting and drivers meeting up with their own personal instructors. My instructor was Ron and now in retrospect, I was assigned the perfect person for me, my abilities/skills, and my personality. We were divided into teams of color (blue, green, and

white) depending on our experience and skill. Shortly after the safety meeting, the instructors hit the track for the first time, while the rest of us met in our colored groups to

discuss the rules, process, and expectations of the day. I must have been more excited than I realized because without thinking, I offered Cat the keys to my car so she could take the vehicle over to the paddock area and surprisingly she took me up on the offer. Cat doesn’t drive my car and this is how I have kept my car in one piece this long.

After our pre-race meeting, I headed over to the paddock area to meet up with Ron to go over my car and get last minute instructions

before heading out on the track. Cat was nowhere to be found, but I heard she was out by the track somewhere taking pictures for the club newsletter. Once on the track, I saw her sitting up on top of a ladder taking what appeared to be hundreds of pictures. Even though the first lap is always a caution lap without any passing, I still felt an adrenalin rush from the anticipation. I paid close attention to acceleration points, breaking areas, and the entrance and exits of the turns. I watched how the other cars around us handled and where their marks were and after all of my mental notes and observations, I was ready to take the wheel.

There were several of us in my group which sometimes made the track feel crowded and for my first time out, I wanted to focus on the handling of my car (there would be plenty of time for racing later), so half way through the run, we decided to pull into the pits to get some space between ourselves and the others. This proved to be a good decision, as I was then able to really put my car to the test.

After the first session, I parked my car in the paddock area and hopped in Ron’s 1995 track ready M3 (# 133). Wow, I learned so much during the ride along, I could

see and feel where Ron was braking, accelerating, and turning to hit the proper apex in the corner. After we finished this session we broke for lunch and I went Cat hunting. I found my lovely wife in a state of panic and nervousness because she saw my car with the hood up and thought something had happened. You see, the last time she saw me was on the track when I pulled into the pits and up to that point, the only time people had pulled into the pits was when and if something was wrong with the car. Thus, she saw me in the pits, then saw my car parked with the hood up and she thought something had happened, so she was off looking for a ride home with someone whom she might have a more enjoyable ride. After laughing at, I mean with her, I explained why we pitted and that the hood was up to help cool the engine off. We enjoyed our lunch together, then she went to find a different spot on the track to take pictures and I got ready for my groups next meeting and debriefing from the morning session.

Throughout the remainder of the day, we had several more sessions with our groups and I became more comfortable with each passing lap. I have to say that I learned a lot about

not only my car and how it handles, but I learned a few things about myself as well. At the end of the day, the instructors went back out on the track for one last time and this time, Ron took Cat for a ride. She absolutely loved it and Ron recorded their whole drive on video (even the part where a car spun out right in front of them) and she was grinning from ear to ear the whole way home. Thanks Ron!

NCCAR, First Track Daycontinued from pg. 18

The day ended with several of us caravanning all the way back to Virginia Beach, adding and deleting a variety of BMW’s along the way from some of the other participants. The ride home went by quickly as Cat and I reminisced and compared our experiences of the day. I am so glad that I was guilted into participating and hope that the club decides to return to NCCAR in the near future. I even heard that it was suggested to have a 2 day event next time, going clockwise on the track one day and counter clockwise the next. For those of you who have not been to a track event before or weren’t able to attend this time, I highly recommend that you keep an eye out for the 2011 calendar of events and mark the date for the next time the club goes to NCCAR; you don’t want to miss

it! Also, you get to drive at your pace and focus on how your car handles. It’s like having a private session just designed for you. You can play and race with other cars or stay separated and just focus on the handling of your particular vehicle. This was a great, first time track experience and I look forward to the club’s next track event.

Sunday, September 19th’ was our first real attempt at not only a Sunday event but also our first brunch and I’m excited to tell you that it was a huge success!

My day began with a wonderful and unexpected surprise; Craig (who was unable to attend) offered me the keys to drive “0 TO 60” to the event. Those of you that know us know that I don’t EVER drive that car.

I was a little hesitant at first, but decided to take up his offer. There was hardly any traffic on the road and this made the drive, along with the perfect weather, even more enjoyable. I just had to make it there and back without any instances. However, this was short lived because as I approached the tunnel, a humungous, white splat came out of nowhere and covered the entire right side of the front windshield. Now, we have all had bird poop land on our windshields, but I bet none of you have had this much come at you in one shot. Let me just say that I thought I had actually hit the bird and all I could think was that Craig is going to kill me. So, as soon as I got to the Chamberlin, I had to get it all cleaned up and this is when I discovered it was also all down the right side of the entire car. I’m almost positive this much poop had to have come from an Ostrich. Once I got the car cleaned up, I entered it into the “People’s Choice Concourse Event” that David Meyr had so wonderfully put together. Most of the 35 attendees didn’t arrive until around 10:30 am, so we decided to put off the concourse event until after brunch. This proved to be a great decision.

The Chamberlin had our tables spread out all over

the dance floor in the Chesapeake Room and we pretty much had the whole place to ourselves. Most everyone took David Meyr’s subtle advice and started with mimosas. The food selection and quality was just as good as when the activity committee had come earlier in the year for a test run. There were several new members that had made this their first club event and some guest that said they were going to join our club. The conversations where delightful and the activity committee used this opportunity to promote our upcoming events and boasted on all the fun we’ve been having at recent events.

After brunch, we all went outside to look at and discuss what we all have in common and of course that would be our “ultimate driving machines”. Now, for those of you that don’t know, one of the most important things our club does is to help support our local food bank. At every club event, we ask that everyone bring can goods or donate cash. Chris Triplett, our food bank liaison, takes all of the donations collected to the Food Bank of South Hampton Roads on behalf of the club. Thankfully, this event produced some great donations. In order to enter your BMW into the concourse event, we asked everyone to either donate $10 or bring can goods. I am thrilled to tell you that we collected $50 and several bags of food. Last year, the club increased its donations by approximately 100%; however this year, we are way behind in even matching last year’s total. So, please, please continue to bring those canned goods to each and every event that you attend.

All of the cars that entered the concourse event were assigned letters, A, B, C… then people would take the letter of their personal favorite car and put in the basket. Valerie Anderson won first place with her 2007 335i convertible. Rich Jones won second place with his 2005 745li. There was a 4 way tie for third place with Sam-I-Am winning from a random drawing

with his Z4. Prizes included wonderful BMW products and clothing donated from Larry’s Imports, Checkered Flag BMW, and Casey BMW.

Everyone overwhelmingly agreed that we should do this again next year with brunch first and the concourse event after. All and all, this was a perfect day! The weather was

beautiful, the turnout was high, the food was delicious, the conversation was excellent, the cars were gorgeous, and the people were engaging. So be sure to mark this event on your calendar next year when we announce the 2011 schedule of events. This is Cat and I’m out to start on my article for the upcoming banquet …. Toodles!

The motor is out of a 1971 2002. The wheels are 15” with some “cheapo tires”. Bought the car for $200 - now have about $4K in it.
