    Friends,

How do we attract more people to become involved in

GW? How do we show them that belonging to a chap-

ter/group is something that they may enjoy? The only thing I

know of is inviting them to go on a ride with us. Maybe a

Sunday ride, a special event we have planned. Ask them what

their favorite road is. Show them that we all have a common

goal and that is to ride and have a safe and fun time. I know

from past experiences that as soon as you say monthly

meetings they ‘freak.’ They just assume that it is boring and

regimental. No one likes to set through long boring meetings. I

guess we could use the word 'gathering', where we get

together and plan out our summer rides. Give it a try and see if

you can invite someone new to join our group. Maybe they

would enjoy just going on a ride with you. Do the sneaky

attack and let them know that the group you are with enjoys

    the same things.

I am excited about our Lavender Lane Farm trip. Even though

the lavender won't be blooming yet we still get to learn about

it. This always gives us another ride later on in the

summer. We'll check it out again when it is bloom-

ing. Remember to bring your money so you can attend the

demonstrations we are having scheduled. As we are doing

that I know that the guys will be finding us a great place to eat

lunch. I can't wait to taste a 'lavender cookie'.

    Ride Safe,

    Darrell & Char

GRAVEL? YOU CAN COUNT ON IT.

Over the years, I have learned there are a handful of things that can make even

the most experienced riders immediately uncomfortable. The unexpected appearance of gravel on a curve is one of them. Some riders have told me that

even a little gravel in a corner has triggered them to stiffen at the controls and ride straight out of a turn. Minimizing such extreme reaction to the sudden

appearance of an unpleasant condition begins by anticipating it in advance and having a planned response. Will there be gravel in the curve ahead? Count on it.

Will we have a strategy to deal with it? When it comes to gravel, count on it. Quite literally.

This time of year, after a long winter of precipitation, washouts and snow

plowing/salting, you can expect to see more gravel—especially on those back roads we all enjoy so much. As always, ride only as fast as you can see, asking

yourself if you could safely and comfortably slow the motorcycle in the space you have ahead should gravel appear. Then start counting. We coach riders to

determine if gravel is “countable” or “uncountable.” As a rule of thumb, if one could easily count the pieces of gravel and can see the road surface between the

stones, then there is likely enough traction to simply continue riding smoothly through it without altering the line. However, if the gravel pieces are too

numerous to be counted, traction is surely compromised and the cornering line must be altered to avoid riding through the debris with the bike at a significant

lean angle. The bottom line? When it comes to gravel on the corners…count on it. Then count it.

When gravel is “countable” there is still plenty of available traction and the rider can maintain a smooth cornering line.

  • When gravel is “uncountable” traction is severely compromised and the rider should alter the cornering line to avoid it.

Bob & Sue’s granddaughter, Jasmine Lacey, graduated in May from

St. Francis College with a degree in Graphics Design and minor in Photography.

And she did this four year course in just three years . . . Kudos to her!

May your dreams take you... to the corners of your smiles, to the

highest of your hopes, to the windows of your opportunities, and to

the most special places your heart has ever known.

  • There were nine M2 members who met at the Parkview Whitley Hospital on May 16, along with guest, Duane Ewell. Rick Warmels asked for feedback on how to improve Rallies. Our group mentioned the weather and the fact that we’re all getting older. The group will attend a TinCaps game on June 26. Contact Karen if you’re interested in tickets. The girls will take a tour of the Lavender Lane Farm on May 25. Meet at the Zion Lutheran Church in Columbia City at 9:45 a.m. or at the gas station in Merriam at 10 a.m. Bob & Sue had driven past it recently and felt the drive didn’t appear to be motorcycle friendly. Those with trikes should be OK, while those on bikes can leave their wife off at the end of the drive (and maybe catch a ride with Pat) and the guys will continue riding. The lavender isn’t in bloom right now so the girls will take a free tour and schedule a date later when the lavender is in bloom and to sign up for the demonstrations, “How to Cook with Lavender” and How to “Propagate Lavender.” Demonstra- tions are $5 each.

Dave M. gave the Safety Lesson on “Gravel. You Can Count On It.” Bikers were involved in both jokes he gave and you had to be there for them. Duane stated there is no date or location yet for Winter Rendezvous or Spring Wing Warm-Up for next year.

  • GETTING OLDER HAS SOME FUN MOMENTS:

My goal for 2016 was to lose just 10 pounds; only 15 to go. Ate salad for dinner. Mostly croutons & tomatoes. Really just one big, round crouton covered with tomato sauce; and cheese; and Pepperoni; and mushrooms; and onions; and - - - - OK, FINE, so it was a pizza. I ate a freekin' pizza. How to prepare Tofu:

    1. Throw it in the trash.

    2. Grill some meat.

I just did a week's worth of cardio after walking into a spider web. I don't mean to brag but, I finished my 14-day diet food in 3 hours and 20 minutes. A recent study has found women who carry a little extra weight live longer than men who mention it. Kids today don't know how easy they have it; when I was young, I had to walk 9 feet through shag carpet to change the TV channel. Remember back when we were kids and every time it was below zero outside, they closed school? Me neither. I may not be that funny or athletic or good looking or smart or talented ... I forgot where I was going with this. I love being over 70. I learn something new every day, and forget 5 others A thief broke into my house last night. He started searching for money, so I woke up and searched with him.

I think I'll just put an "Out of Order" sticker on my forehead and call it a day. Senility has been a smooth transition for me. "Just remember, once you're over the hill you begin to pick up speed."
