Milestone Achievements of Executive Committee - 2013-15

Successful installation of endearing concept of Mandaara Focus Groups:

The concept of focus groups was introduced, sensing the necessity in the community and

to provide a platform for all to nurture variety of interests, to encourage participation

without any prejudice, to facilitate networking opportunity and all in all to bring out the best in people

working together with like-minded people in these following focus groups.

Seva Mandaara, Geeta Mandaara, Jnana Mandaara, Chitrakala Mandaara, Yuva Mandaara and

Saahitya Mandaara

Maadhurya – A Benefit Concert – An initiative of Seva Mandaara:

It was a modest attempt to reach out to a larger audience in the region, elevating NEKK’s existence to a

noble cause, garnering support from outside NEKK communities as well, with high profile dance and mu-

sic rendition by our own region’s accomplished artists. It’s a consolidated support and willingness of

NEKK members and organizing committee’s efforts that resulted into a grand success; NEKK is proud to

have adopted one Ekal School in Belgaum district, Karnataka for lifetime support, and a decent sum of do-

nation amount to Samarthanam Trust.

Brand new website Mandaara.org:

A dynamic, State of the art implementation of completely redesigned website, has been made possible

with persistent efforts and much of creativity existed within the community, significantly reduces tech-

nical limitations, enhance flexibility and scalability in adapting to latest trends and current on-going needs,

making it a one stop useful resource with ease of access.

Marketing outreach and community partnerships:

The marketing team has strengthened all its channels, incorporated collective strategies in reaching out to

broader audience, proactively expanded its public relation efforts and its approach to budget expenses and

bring in necessary funds.

Process Reforms 2014 – 1. Election & Transition, 2. Finance & Accounting, 3. Focus groups admin:

It was a leap into adding, improving and organizing processes, it was an essential initiative to introduce a

streamlined approach and install a fair process in how NEKK conducts the election and transition, best

practices to manage finances and book keeping and setting administration guidelines to focus groups

NEKK AV System - Equipment upgrade:

A State of the art AV equipment set was added to NEKK assets with the help of generous donation from

NEKK membership in a dedicated AV fundraiser and from NAVIKA 2013 team. With this addition, NEKK

is now become self-reliant on its AV needs and operational quality has been phenomenal and evident in

our events.

Members of Executive Committee express their heartfelt gratitude to entire NEKK community for the priv-ilege given and for humble support and encouragement bestowed upon us on various community projects

and programs.

In the past century, women have begun to step up and fight for their equality in society. The goal of creat-

ing an environment where women can make independent decisions for their personal development has

been set out to be accomplished. Women empowerment is a popular topic; one not only discussed but also

one that has a lot of commitment. Our world has come a long way from the strict stereotypes placed by the

once traditional society. Women have always been considered inferior to men for no apparent reason. But

no matter of how far society is from achieving the necessary gender equality there are those few brave

women who are excelling far beyond men in their fields. Such role models in society help inspire the

young women to do the same in the future. Many women from our own country, India, have helped prove

the ability of women in the world by achieving remarkable heights in their careers.

In the past century, women have participated in gender biased and competitive fields such as science, poli-

tics, business, and arts. While many may not realize it the following Indian or Indian-American women

have created a positive impact on our society today. By sharing their life stories of hard-work and success,

young women and girls will be encouraged to accomplish their goals in life without the restraint of gender

inequality.

In the science field the one and only Kalpana Chawla made India proud by being

the first Indian-American astronaut and first Indian woman in space. She was one

of the two women aboard the Columbia space shuttle in 2003. Unfortunately, she

lost her life in the crash that occurred during the shuttle’s landing. She has won

several awards for her service in NASA such as the Congressional Space Medal of

Honor, the NASA Distinguished Service Medal, and the NASA Space Flight Med-

al. Chawla will forever be remembered for her achievement and success in the

male dominated occupation of aeronautics.

Politics is an another heavily competitive field in

regard to gender. It is difficult to find women who

have held high positions in government. India is one of the few countries

who have had a women prime minister and president: Indira Gandhi and

Pratiba Patil, respectively. Indira Gandhi was the fourth and second longest

serving prime minister of India. As the prime minister, Gandhi was known

for her political ruthlessness and unprecedented centralization of power.

Being the first women prime minister of India, she

has received India’s highest civilian honor, the Bha-

rata Ratna, and was named as “Women of the Millennium”. She was assassinated

in 1984, but India has never forgotten her impact on the country.

Business is an equally aggressive career path when it comes to gender. In this field,

successful entrepreneur Indra Nooyi, has proved that women can excel when it

comes to business. Nooyi is a business executive and the current Chairperson and

Chief Executive Officer of PepsiCo, the second largest food and beverage business

in the world.

Opening the Doors of Success for Women

~ Akshita Rao

Page 15: Darpana Yugaadi 2015

Page 15 ಮಂದಾರ ನಯೂ ಇಂಗಲಂಡ ಕನನಡ ಕಯಟ ವಾರಾಾಪತರಕ - ಯುಗಾದ Nooyi has been leading the company for the past decade; during this time she has reconstructed the com-

pany by introducing the Yum! Brands, and taking in Tropicana, Quaker Oats, and Gatorade. Since her po-

sition as CEO in 2001, the company’s annual revenues have risen 72% and its net profits have doubled. She

has been consecutively ranked in the top 10 of the World’s 100 Most Powerful Women. Even today Nooyi

has been achieving great heights, making India, especially women, proud.

All over the world we can see such examples of women making an impact in several domains. Regardless

of the struggles they face being a woman; they have strived to accomplish more than an average man.

These women are daily fighting battles regarding their gender and consecutively put down, yet they stand

right up and continue to do what they love. They have set such an inspiration for young women and girls

in society and have influenced them to reach their goals. Their endeavors have resulted in triumph and

opened the door wider for females who wish to excel in such male-dominated societies.

The Purple Palm Tree ~ Ruchitha Rajaghatta.

It sways to and fro.

It lives its life with no sense of time, Enjoying every second. That purple palm tree, It is as tall as can be.

It rocks with the wind, in a trance, Sleeping forever,

And smiling as it lives through its adventurous dreams, The kids will run. They will jump.

They will laugh and play. But they all join hands at the end of the day.

They say thank – you to a mayor that loves them, This miraculous, wondrous, magnificent purple plant,

Continued to grow as a human would. It grew bigger and bigger, And its purple grew bold, It grew as high as the sky

And never told a lie. When the time came,

This purple palm tree at the corner of town, Told all the kids, Why it was sad.

It told all the kids, Why it looked drab.

It spoke to them with a voice as soft as silk, It told them it was growing old,

Soon, it would die, Dead and cold.

It told them to climb it now, Because it would be nothing but a purple palm tree stump soon.

All the kids, Joined hands one more time,

This time they spoke of love and affection,

Gandhiji famously said, “I fail to see any reason for jubilation over the birth of a son and mourning over

the birth of a daughter, both are God’s gifts and have equal right to live”. Over the past 20 years, India has

sacrificed over ten million female fetuses (www.unicef.org/earlychildhood/files/Guide_to_GC7.pdf). The

numbers are appalling and it is not just the uneducated people who are committing such crimes but also

the so called civilized and educated people living in the cities. The declining ratio of girls to boys is specu-

lated to be the reason for rising atrocities on women. Therefore, it is essential to save a girl child as women

are not only procreators but engineers of a better peaceful civilization.

In any humanitarian crisis, children and women in particular are caught in the cross-fire and are physical-

ly and mentally assaulted. The silver lining in thesecrisis is that many women have fought bravely to

maintain dignity and have truly inspired and emerged as victors including Aung San Suu Kyi, Malala

Yousafzai, Sunitha Krishnan, Suzette Jordan and many more.

Research has shown that when we help empower a woman, the whole society benefits (http://

www.icrw.org). True progress starts with teaching a little girl that she is a strong and a powerful being

and nothing is beyond her reach. Even in the world’s foremost economic power, United States of America,

gender bias occurs on a daily basis, be it in sports or in professional workforce. Gender inequality is the

root cause of most social evils and poses a specific challenge for women’s welfare and development. The

only way we can justly empower a woman and save a girl child is by first breaking the barriers of gender

bias, provide sound education, and more importantly instill confidence in young women.

Women of the 21st century assume many roles including a daughter, mother, leader, care-taker, entrepre-

neur, and a role model. In this day and age, why do we need someone/ man to empower us women? It is

time we empower ourselves and encourage our own gender. It is every woman’s duty and responsibility

to be sensitive towards other women, a mother needs to embolden her daughter, a mother-in-law must

support her daughter-in-law, and girlfriends have to stand up for each other. Our value as a woman

should not be in trying to imitate men or to become more like men. It is essential not to resent men but to

strive for equality on all fronts including home and work. Our society will truly become liberated only

when men and women alike cherish the idea that both the genders need to be respectful of each other.

Lastly, we need to instill a concept that former secretary general of United Nations, Kofi Annan deemed,

“there is no tool for development more effective than empowerment of women”.

Recently, there was huge outcry over the BBC documentary on Nirbhaya case (http://en.wikipedia.org/

wiki/2012_Delhi_gang_rape). Whether we supported the Indian government ban or the makers of the doc-

umentary, we were all affected by this case. Most of us felt the pain of Nirbhaya and everyone across the

globe prayed for her well-being unfortunately she bravely lost her battle. All of us were deeply wounded

by this incident including Radhika Dixit’s sister Late Smt. Chandrika Dixit. Below is a poem that she wrote.

I AM HIS CREATION

~ Late Smt. Chandrika Dixit

Fear and Insecurity are the words I always thought

Never ever existed in my mind and heart

But why do I feel I am getting closer to that

With loads of worry, anxiety, frustration and angst

Am I really safe in this world of crime?

Move around alone thinking I am going to be fine

For the first time I am scared of being a woman

Praying I am always protected by my man and my son

These thoughts are worrying me day and night

I want to come out of this and be normal and alright

Independent, daring and dashing I still am

Do I let this bother me and make me calm?

I am telling myself that this will not easily pause

Need to move on and help to fight the cause

I greatly believe this needs a mindset change

Am all set to do whatever I can within my range

I want to say out loud that I am proud to be a woman

WORLD PEACE & DEVELOPMENT

Peace is Our step towards progress, growth & prosperity!

Art by Kailash Chintamani

World Peace

~ Prisha Naduthota

Before there were nations fighting each other, there were kingdoms fighting each other, and even before

that, small villages fighting each other. But as the world, the population and our knowledge grows, man-

kind takes baby steps towards the seemingly impossible thought that is “peace”. Still, though, the world

is not fully at peace. Wars are still fought, Crime continues to happen, and sometimes that little thing we

affectionately call “peace” seems like a meaningless thought, one left for fairy tales told at a child’s bed-

side.

Page 19: Darpana Yugaadi 2015

Page 19 ಮಂದಾರ ನಯೂ ಇಂಗಲಂಡ ಕನನಡ ಕಯಟ ವಾರಾಾಪತರಕ - ಯುಗಾದ

To get to peace, the wars plaguing our world needs to simmer to a halt. Sure, there’ll always be disagree-

ments - us humans have a long history of disagreeing with each other- yet the number of wars could dwin-

dle to maybe one war every fifty or so years, or hopefully less than that. The United States of America, for

example, has been involved in some war or another since its independence during the Revolutionary War,

which started in 1775. And yeah, that does have something to do with America finding it needing to fight

everyone else’s war, but it also has to do with the fact that there have been wars to fight in a constant

stream since the US gained its independence in 1776. That means that every year since 1776, for two hun-

dred and fourteen years some country or another has been at war. Even before our revolutionary war,

countries have fought each other. Most of the reasons any war has happened, such as disagreements, free-

dom, or land, could just as easily been talked over; a battle of words, not of guns and grenades.

Another problem that has beset our world from the beginning of civilization is crime. Felony, misdemean-

or, misdeed, offense, whatever its called, it has bedeviled us, toppled governments, left families to rot.

Theft, murder, arson, and other heinous felonies happen, not withstanding to laws, regardless of punish-

ment. Hundreds of criminals go to jail, yet thousands of offenses to the laws come about. But the question

is why these crimes take place in the first place; for some it’s money, for some bribes, others blackmail, and

to another it might be a threat. Someone could be mentally unstable, and to some, simply surviving might

be the reason. But if those reasons were taken out, crime could possibly dwindle into a much more man-

ageable number.

Even though our Earth has so many problems, wars and crimes not even brushing it, tranquility is a possi-

bility. A hundred years ago, having the idea that a small square thing could be touched to talk to people,

play games, and read would have people laughing at you. Similarly, maybe in a hundred years, the idea

that people would kill or steal or break another’s property, or that squadrons of people would attempt to

dispatch each other would be laughable. It isn’t like we aren’t well on the way to peace. Negotiators try to

talk other nations out of war, pacifists protest bloodshed. Police try to stop crimes as they happen, laws

are set to dissuade crime.

So peace is possible. Our knowledge of how to get to peace grows, even as wars are fought and crimes are

committed. The fairy tale grows into reality, and even as people fight, others make peace. Even as some

people enact crime, another force stops them. And even as many people lose hope in peace, other people

gain aspiration for it. So maybe one day, we’ll all wake up in an Earth where crime is just as sparse in

Camden, New Jersey as it is in Scottsdale, Arizona. And maybe we’ll all wake up in a world where wars

are almost never fought, and those small amount of wars end within a year. But until that day comes, we,

as powerless as we are, can only raise our voices to the sky and hope.

Yakshagana in New England in the last 15 years

Yakshagana – the art: Yakshagana that literally means music of celestial beings is a vibrant theatrical dance

-drama, an art form involving music, dance, acting, dialog, and elaborate costumes. While the music and

dance adhere to the well-established talas like in other classical Indian dance forms, the artists render dia-

logs spontaneously on the stage. This combination of classical and folk elements makes Yakshagana distinct

from any other Indian art. The music component is rendered by what is called as “ Himmela team“ that is

led by a vocalist called Bhagavata who is accompanied by percussionists on two different kinds of drums,

Chande and Maddale. The artists in “ Mummela “ dressed in colorful costumes dance to the tune of the

music and deliver dialogs in between the songs. The story-theme for the show, called Katha Prasanga, is

generally taken from Ramayana, Mahabharata

or the Puranas.

Yakshagana derives its roots from Bayalata that

was prevalent throughout Karnataka some cen-

turies ago. Today this art form is prevalent in

the coastal regions of Karavali and Malenadu

and is performed by various professional troops

called Melas in the non-rainy months (Oct-May),

typically in overnight shows. There are two

styles of Yakshagana based on their origin:

Badagu Tittu from Kundapura-Honnavara re-

gion and Tenku Tittu from Udupi-Mangaluru

region. While the basic components are the same

in both styles, the Badagu Tittu style is more Ab-

hinaya-centric whereas the Tenku Tittu style is

more dialog-centric. There is another derivative

art form of Yakshagana called Tala Maddale. This form has only music and dialog and the dialogs get

prominence based on the ability of the artists to do Tarka and Vada.

The visiting artists: New England residents have been fortunate to witness several Yakshagana shows of

both styles by some of the stalwarts over the years. Shambhu Hegde Team from Keremane gave a mesmer-

izing show – Gada Yuddha – in NEKK Ganeshotsava of 2006. The following year (2007), Yakshagana Kala

Vrunda from Houston led by Vasudeva Aithal gave a performance in NEKK. Vasudeva had been leading a

team of Yakshagana artists from various parts of the USA, the prominent ones being Rajendra Kedilaya of

IL, Shanti Tantri of MD, Ramesh Kekuda of CA and Shashidhar Somayaji of CA. This team performed in

NEKK again in 2009. Local talents have performed in both of these shows as well - Jyothi Rao & Madhu

Mattihalli in the first show and Madhu Mattihalli & Praveena Naduthota in the second one.

The Yakshagana scene in New England reached its pinnacle in 2012 when there were two shows of both

styles – both accompanied by live Himmela for the first time. Earlier in the year Yakshamitra of Toronto led

by Parameshwara Bhat performed Bhasmasura - Mohini as one of the Jhenkara programs and a few months

later Yaksha Manjusha from Mangaluru led by Vidya Kolyur performed in Ratna Mahotsava. (Continued

in the next page.)

Both shows were outstanding and well appreciated by all Kala rasikas. One week later Yaksha Manjusha

gave another show – Panchavati – this time all in Hindi – again another first of its kind. Yaksha Manjusha

performed again one year later in the Navika conference, Worcester, MA in 2013.

A new height is reached in 2013 when Kondadakuli Team from Kumbhashi led by Kondadakuli Rama-

chandra Hegde visited the region. Two shows were organized under the banners of Kala Tarangini and

Boston Yakshaloka and both shows were at the mark, Boston has never seen before. The first show – Gada

Yuddha - had Kondadakuli Ramachandra Hegde and Neelkod Shankar Hegde in lead roles assisted by

several local artists (Praveena Naduthota, Prabhakara Bhat, Raghu Kinnigoli, Madhu Mattihalli, and

Naveen Hegde). In the second show – Nrutya Vaibhava – Kondadakuli in purusha vesha and Neelkod in

stree vesha chiseled a ShringaraRasa-centric presentation that was full of Bhava and Abhinaya. Both

shows were again accompanied by live himmela.

The local artists

Local talents from the New England area have contributed immensely to the region’s Yakshagana scene as

well. Raghurama Shetty has been an early pioneer who mobilized several enthusiasts and gave numerous

shows in the region in 1998-2002 periods. His team even had one formally trained female (Savitha Holla) –

a rare feat at that time. Raghurama has the distinction of taking a local team to an AKKA show (Detroit,

2002) for the first time; this perhaps is the only time any local team has performed in any AKKA show so

far. Apart from Raghurama Shetty and his son Thejas Shetty, Praveena Naduthota, Sudhakara Rao, Suhas

Rao, Ullas Rao and Prayuth Naduthota also performed in that show.

With Raghurama Shetty moving out of New England in the first half of the last decade and Yakshagana

Kala Vrunda visiting the region in the second half, some realignment took place to fill the otherwise lull

period – hence the Boston Yakshaloka of Badagu style was born. This team is led by ever enthusiastic, en-

ergetic performer Praveena Naduthota. Praveena was initially nurtured in the Raghurama Shetty team

and later was trained by visiting professionals. He has been ably assisted by Madhu Mattihalli in not only

giving shows all over USA but also in training several enthusiasts. Madhu grew up in the midst of

Yakshagana with all his family members connected to this art one way or the other. Today several local

enthusiasts such as Vaishali Hegde, Raghu Kinnigoli, Padma Naduthota, Prabhakara Bhat, Sudhakara

Rao, and Unnati Mattihalli participate in the shows of Boston Yakshaloka. Rekha Nagaraj and Kavya

Katugam performed in some of the shows in the past. With the inclusion of a couple of outside artists

(Rajendra Kedilaya of IL and Naveen Hegde of Toronto), Yakshaloka has performed in Framingham and

Chelmsford MA, Cleveland OH, Lexington KY, Weather fields CT, Columbus OH, Edison NJ and very

recently in South Charleston WV. Yakshaloka donates all the net proceeds to an organization in Udupi

that helps the Yakshagana artists in their retirement.

Boston Yakshaloka has a mission of not only spreading the Yakshagana awareness but also of training the

next generation so that the interest in this art form is kept alive. If anyone, young or adult, wants to join

Yakshaloka in this mission, please contact Praveena Naduthota at [email protected].

Sudhakara Rao is a Yakshagana aficionado since his childhood and is from a family lineage having strong ties to Yakshagana and

Tala Maddale. Over the years, he has been instrumental in bringing several Yakshagana artists/troops to the New England area

such as Shamhu Hegde team, Vasudeva Aithal team, Yaksha Mitra, Yaksha Manjusha and more recently the Kondadakuli Team

under the banners of NEKK, Kala Tarangini and Boston Yakshaloka. He has been actively participating in the shows of local

talents: formerly in the team of Raghurama Shetty and currently in Boston Yakshaloka.
