What have you been doing at NZFW this year? I’ve been covering content for my blog (Badlands-blog.com) and Instagram (@talisa_sutton).What did you know and think of NZ fashion before NZFW? I have been a big supporter of NZ designers for the last few years. I think I saved up for my first piece of Karen Walker when I was 16! They have a very unique style, and the fashion is very diverse too — a great mixture of wearable simplicity, fun colour, prints, and youth culture influences, but also a strong sense of innovation. How did you get into fashion?I studied fashion in high school. I picked up my first Vogue when I was about 12 and haven’t

really looked back! I couldn’t quite master the technical side of pattern making and garment construction, so I went to do a Cert IV in Fashion Business straight after school. Around the same time I was working in retail (at Belinda and The Corner Shop) and also doing a bit of styling assisting. I ended up interning at a magazine where I realised I was interested in the art direction side of things, so I went on to study graphic design and have been working across the two fields since.Three brands you’re loving right now? The Row — I’m excited to visit their LA store in a few weeks time, I love the aesthetic. Joseph — Their knit sets and knotted sweater dress for AW are amazing. Georgia Alice — I’m having a big moment with flares, layers and raw hems. Georgia is definitely one to watch! What are you wearing today?A Dion Lee open back sweater, Citizens of Humanity flares, Petite Grand Hoop Earrings and Aquazzura tie-back heels. The last text message you sent?An emoji string to my husband (kissy face, coffee, sleepy face!)Favourite trend or look for summer? I love white on white every summer, but this season I’ll be adding a little more of that 70s vibe into the mix.

What is your night-time routine? My husband is a great cook so I love to have dinner in. Sometimes we’ll watch an episode of something on Netflix and then have a cup of tea to catch up on each other’s day. Usually we’ll both start working again afterwards — I work on my blog up until about 11pm most nights and then I’ll do a little bit of reading before going to bed. I try to avoid too much screen time before sleeping. What advice would you give to young designers/bloggers/creatives starting out?Work experience is always a great place to start. Don’t be afraid to reach out to people and try as much as you can. It’s the best way to get a feel for a position and you can make great contacts too.

When it comes to blogging, finding your niche and staying true to your personal style is so important. I have kept my blog going over the past six years alongside study and full-time work because I can’t imagine the thought of not doing it! If you’re passionate about something, it really does come across in everything you do. Hard work, perseverance, a professional approach and your own unique point of view are all great traits to have, and the same goes for design.

I’ve been consciously cutting back, trying to buy less and rediscover more, so being

asked to nominate new season picks is tempting fate on my pledge of voluntary

restraint. If you look, you’ll be lured... and for my bank balance’s sake the Miu Mius with a Swarovski heel will likely stay in

unfulfilled lust-have territory. Luckily for me, as beauty editor I get to

try plenty of cosmetics, so that’s a fair bit of my vicarious shopping sorted. Fashion Week means working long days, so long-

wearing semi-matte yet moisturising makeup and flatter shoes help with staying

power. Thankfully, I’m not of the selfie generation so I dress to please myself

rather than attract attention from like-minded snappers. What always appeals

are labels that I will want to wear for more than one season. Impactful accessories and bursts of colour, off-setting a darker palette in good quality layer-able fabrics, are key.

Kate Sylvester’s dress I’m wearing here is a keeper, and her silk top would work around the clock. For a bold lip I’ve been enjoying

M.A.C’s bricky reds, but I’m looking to lighten up a little with Shiseido’s much

vaunted balm-like Veiled Rouge.

Shiseido Veiled Rouge in Mischief $51.

Moochi coat $429.99.

Kate Sylvester top $265.

I took this outside my neighbour’s door because it’s the best lighting, and you gotta always find your light, ladies. I’m wearing Harman Grubisa (of course),

and my favourite Stolen Girlfriends Club glasses. Never forget a strong brow.

Co-designer for Harman Grubisa, Jessica Grubisa also has a formidable sense of style. Each day this week, she’ll share her

favourite accessory selfies.

“The 1970s vibe of Twenty-seven Names’ loose linen trousers, jacket and waistcoat. Think Diane Keaton in Annie Hall.”— Amanda Linnell, managing editor

“Two shows based on friendship: Wednesday’s NZFW debut from Harman Grubisa designers Madeline Harman and Jessica Grubisa, and Tuesday morning’s outdoor presentation from Anjali Stewart and Rachel Easting of Twenty-seven Names. Both shows were strong and packed with personality, reflecting the talent and intelligence of the women behind the brands.” — Zoe Walker, associate editor

“The brilliance of the Harman Grubisa show.”— Dan Ahwa, fashion editor

“Real life on the runway: the marriage proposal at Miromoda between designers Hohepa Thompson and Mia Brennan who met at the event three years ago. Genuine, not staged and cheesy.”— Janetta Mackay, beauty editor

If you’re after something crisp and bold, Rachel Mills is the brand for you. The AUT graduate and patternmaker by trade certainly has an eye for detail.

Here I’m wearing her powder blue shirt and black A-line midi skirt. Seemingly simple garments, but Rachel’s refined and feminine touch is present the minute that you put them on. Her clothes, crafted predominantly out of cotton and silk, never skimp on pockets and include closures far beyond a zip.

The starting point for her debut AW16 collection was the physical and ritualistic qualities of the Kimono. Rachel has adapted these qualities for the modern girl, encouraging the wearer to slow down and enjoy the process of getting dressed. She describes her pieces as polished, functional and self-assured – and that is exactly how I felt wearing them.

The Viva team share their highlights of the week

“The foundations of Stolen Girlfriends Club are a little bit rock ‘n’ roll, so it’s only fitting that the brand’s 10th birthday runway show featured a stage dive. At the St James, model Derya Parlak went head first into the crowd, wearing a mock band shirt, much to the audience’s delight.”— Jessica Beresford, digital content producer

“I always look forward to the unexpected elements Stolen Girlfriends Club add to the mix, and there were more than a few stand-outs this year. But the icing on the cake was the dance moves my colleagues pulled at the after party. Those sweet memories will keep me going until next year’s Fashion Week.”— Rosie Kelway, writer

When you don’t feel like co-ordinating your top with your bottom, try donning a jumpsuit. The convenience of a one-piece is hard to beat, and there’s a slew of celebrities who would agree — think of Gigi Hadid’s knockout gold-flared jumpsuit at the CFDA Awards.

Moochi’s spring collection promises to mix elegance with everyday dressing, and this jumpsuit does just that, with its halter-shaped neckline and belted-bow detail that cinches at the waist.• Moochi Award jumpsuit, $399, from ShopViva.co.nz

think about time and history and posterity and sacrifice, and all of the things that will still be there after we are gone.Would you rather go to the ballet, an opera or a play? Impossible question — it depends on the quality of each one. The memory of a great performance of dance, drama or opera can last a lifetime; on the other hand, time slows to a crawl when you’re sitting in the audience of something that isn’t coming off. I’m pickier about what I go to these days — life’s too short.Who’s your favourite NZ artist? Colin McCahon. I try to go to see Northland Panels in Te Papa whenever I am in Wellington. The first time I saw it, I felt that proper sense of awe that you get every now and then, if you are lucky, with a piece of art. Also that immediate recognition of a truth you didn’t even know you knew.

Also, Kate Newby is fantastic; I love her humour and the sense of play in her work. It was so cool seeing her show get a rave in the New York Times recently. What’s the most memorable gig/concert you’ve been to in Auckland? Hard one, too many to choose. Nick Cave in the old St James, leaping across the stage like a besuited Mephistopheles. PJ Harvey at the Big Day Out in a tiny sparkly bodysuit, with a very big guitar. Being part of the blissful congregation for Leonard Cohen at Vector. Getting told off for dancing at Bob Dylan in the same venue by the fun police. Most recently Bic Runga and Tiny Ruins at the Winter Garden in the Civic. I had a little cry when they all did Sway together at the encore, there was so much love in the room.

Where’s your favourite place to watch a film in Auckland? I always feel a bit glamorous in the Capitol, going up those old-Hollywood stairs. There’s nothing better than sneaking into the Academy on a rainy Wednesday for a $5 special, and re-emerging totally energised a couple of hours later, after being transported to another world. The fresh flowers in the ladies loos at The Bridgeway are a lovely surprise every time, and getting the ferry over to Devonport to see a great documentary or an old classic at The Vic is my idea of a perfect Auckland day out.

But for atmosphere and a real sense of everyday indulgence, it’s hard to go past a screening at the Civic while the Film Festival is on. The grand old lady of Queen St turns a film into an event. Sitting in front of those Art Deco flamingos, waiting for the lights to dim, what bliss! I spent a Saturday morning there recently watching the Gore Vidal/William F Buckley doco Best of Enemies, and it’s saying something that the venue was as good as the film. What exhibition space do you always go back to? I love the new Auckland Art Gallery, not just for the inspiring and provoking mix of old and new in the collections, but for the space itself as well. It’s light and airy and exists in harmony with the spaces around it — the park and the trees on one side, the city on the other. It’s a great place to go and hang out.

I live in Parnell though, so it wouldn’t be right if I didn’t give credit to Auckland War Memorial Museum as well. I go to the Domain most days, and even a quick run around the perimeter of this gorgeous classical building is enough to make one
