Cuando PAPÁ llega a casaCuando PAPÁ llega a casa

Christina Cabral was sitting on a swing with a sad look on her face when her best friend Violet Velascow spotted her from across the playground. “Hi Christina! Are you ready to play softball?” Violet asked with a bat in her hand. Violet loved playing softball with Christina after school.

Cristina Cabral estaba sentada en el columpio con una mirada triste en su rostro cuando su mejor amiga Violeta Velascow la vió desde el patio de recreo. “¡Hola Cristina! ¿Estás lista para jugar al softbol?” preguntó Violeta con un bate en la mano. A Violeta le encantaba jugar al softbol con Cristina después de la escuela.

“Not today,” Christina responded quietly. “My dad had to go away a few days for work and he won’t be coming home until next week. I miss him. My mom said that if I think of all the things he and I could do together when he comes home, it will help the time go by faster. I’m trying to think of something but I can’t think of anything.”

“Hoy no” respondió Cristina en voz baja. “Mi papá tuvo que irse fuera uno días por el trabajo y no llegará a casa hasta la próxima semana. Lo extraño. Mi mamá dijo que si pienso en todas las cosas que él y yo podríamos hacer juntos cuando llegue a casa, eso ayudará a que el tiempo pase más rápido. Estoy tratando de pensar en algo, pero no puedo pensar en nada”.

All of a sudden, Violet had an idea! “Christina, wait! I bet our friends can share what they do when their dad comes home from work. Hopefully their stories can give you some ideas,” Violet proclaimed with enthusiasm. ‘That’s a great idea!” responded Christina.

¡De repente, Violeta tuvo una idea! “¡Cristina, espera! Me imagino que nuestros amigos pueden compartir lo que hacen cuando sus papás llegan a casa del trabajo. Espero que sus historias puedan darte algunas ideas” proclamó Violeta con entusiasmo. “¡Es una gran idea!” respondió Cristina.

Alina was picking dandelions in the field when Christina and Violet joined her. “Alina, do you ever miss your dad when he’s at work?” asked Christina. “Yes, of course. I miss him the entire day but then I remember that when he comes home, he comes through the door, lifts me up and gives me a big kiss! Every day! Just thinking about that cheers me up!” responded Alina.

Alina estaba recogiendo dientes de león en el campo cuando Cristina y Violeta la acompañaron. “Alina, ¿algunas veces extrañas a tu papá cuando está en el trabajo?” preguntó Cristina. “Sí, por supuesto. Lo extraño todo el día, pero luego recuerdo que cuando llega a casa, entra por la puerta, me levanta y me da un gran beso! ¡Todos los días! ¡Tan sólo pensar en eso me alegra!” respondió Alina.

Violet smiled at Christina, who had cheered up after hearing Alina’s story. As they walked towards the softball field, they found their friends Leonard de Leon, Mary La Mariposa and Sebastian. “Hi, friends! We were wondering: what do you do when your dad comes home from work?” asked Violet.

Violeta le sonrió a Cristina, quien se había alegrado después de escuchar la historia de Alina. Mientras caminaban hacia el campo de softbol, encontraron a sus amigos Leonardo de León, María La Mariposa y Sebastián. “¡Hola amigos! Queríamos saber, ¿qué hacen cuando su papá llega a casa del trabajo?” preguntó Violeta.

Mary quickly responded, “My dad doesn’t go to work – he takes care of me and my siblings. He picks us up from school, cleans the house, and helps us with homework. I love having my dad at home all day! He gives me a big snuggle in the morning and an even bigger snuggle before bedtime.”

María respondió rápidamente, “Mi papá no va a trabajar - él se ocupa de mí y de mis hermanos. Nos recoge de la escuela, limpia la casa y nos ayuda con la tarea. ¡Me encanta tener a mi papá en casa todo el día! Él me acurruca por las mañanas y aún más por las noches”.

Then Leonard said, “My dad works building houses and comes home late in the afternoon. My mom doesn’t like his dirty boots inside the house, so I sit with him while he takes them off outside and he tells me about the things he built that day. My dad is so strong!”

Después Leonardo dijo: “Mi papá trabaja construyendo casas y llega a casa por la tarde. A mi mamá no le gustan sus botas sucias adentro de la casa, así que me siento con él mientras se las quita afuera y me cuenta de las cosas que construyó ese día. ¡Mi papá es muy fuerte!”

Skipping from across the softball field, Charlie Castor came to join the conversation. “My dad doesn’t live at my house, but my grandpa does! He takes me to soccer practice and he even taught me how to tie my shoes. My grandpa always tucks me in at night because he knows how to tuck the blankets in really tight so I don’t fall out of my bed.” The kids laughed as they imagined Charlie falling out of his bed.

Saltando desde el otro lado del campo de softbol, Carlos Castor se unió a la conversación. “Mi papá no vive en mi casa, ¡pero mi abuelo sí! Él me lleva a la práctica de fútbol e incluso me enseñó cómo atar mis zapatos. Mi abuelo siempre me arropa en la noche porque sabe cómo doblar las cobijas muy apretadas para no caerme de la cama”. Los niños se rieron cuando se imaginaron a Carlos cayéndose de su cama.

Just then, Sebastian took a deep breath and pulled out a shiny, round object from his pocket. “My dad is in the military, so sometimes he doesn’t come home for a long, long time. He gave me this compass to remind me that he’s always thinking of me, no matter where he is,” said Sebastian with a smile. “I miss him so much but I’m proud that he’s serving our country. He’s my hero.”

En ese momento, Sebastián respiró profundamente y sacó un objeto brillante y redondo de su bolsillo. “Mi papá está en las fuerzas armadas, así que a veces no viene a casa por mucho, mucho tiempo. Él me dió esta brújula para recordarme que siempre está pensando en mí, no importa dónde esté” dijo Sebastián con una sonrisa. “Le echo mucho de menos, pero estoy orgulloso de que esté sirviendo a nuestro país. Él es mi héroe”.

All the kids were admiring Sebastian’s compass when Christina turned to Violet with wide eyes, “Wow Violet, you were right! Those were all great ideas!”

Todos los niños estaban admirando la brújula de Sebastián cuando Cristina miró a Violeta con ojos grandes, “¡Vaya Violeta, tenías razón! ¡Todas esas son buenas ideas!”

The following week, Christina’s dad finally came home from work. Christina was excited to tell him all about her friends’ stories. “Dad, when you come home from work next time, can you give me a big kiss, let me sit with you while you take your shoes off, and bring me something to remember you by?” asked Christina. She even asked him to tuck her into bed super tight, the way Charlie’s grandpa does! Before falling asleep Christina whispered, “Dad, I’m so glad you’re home!”

La semana siguiente, el papá de Cristina finalmente llegó a casa de su trabajo. Cristina estaba emocionada de contarle todo sobre las historias de sus amigos. “Papá, cuando vuelvas a casa del trabajo la próxima vez, ¿puedes darme un gran beso, dejarme sentarme contigo mientras te quitas los zapatos y traerme algo para que te recuerde?” preguntó Cristina. Incluso le pidió que la arropara muy apretada, ¡así como lo hace el abuelo de Carlos! Antes de quedarse dormida, Cristina susurró, “Papá, ¡estoy tan contenta de que estés en casa!”
