The Part-time Degree will be available at all of these venues in September 2012. It will also be offered at Townhill (The Phoenix Centre), Banwen (DOVE Workshop), Port Talbot YMCA, Llandybie Memorial Hall, Llanelli (The Stebonheath Centre for Enterprise), Pembroke Dock Community Learning Centre and Haverfordwest Community Learning Centre.

Introduction

The BA Degree Preparation Programme in Humanities is a course for adults who are considering studying at Higher Education (HE) level. It is offered by the Department of Adult Continuing Education (DACE) at Swansea university and is delivered on campus at Singleton Park and in the community in Swansea and Neath Port Talbot, Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire.

After successfully completing the programme many students progress to the Part-time BA (Honours) Humanities Degree or to a variety of HE certificates offered by DACE. Alternatively, students can choose other courses at DACE or elsewhere before progressing to higher level studies.

At DACE we have an excellent group of tutors who in addition to being experts in their own subject areas are also committed to helping adult students reach their full potential.

The programme timetable for each venue is given in detail on pages 30 - 38. Please enjoy reading the brochure and I hope that you will decide to study with us.

Professor Colin Trotman, Head of DepartmentJoanna Ward, Prepare for BA Humanities Programme Co-ordinator

What can I study?

The structure of the BA Degree Preparation Programme is very flexible and you can mix and match your courses or “modules” at a number of venues to suit your needs. You can study 2 modules at one venue (e.g. history and psychology at Neath Port Talbot College, Queen Street Centre) or study one module at one venue and another module at a different venue (e.g. counselling at the Singleton Park Campus in Swansea and sociology at Clydach).

n You must study 2 modules n If you meet the assessment criteria you will gain 10 credits at Level 0 for each

module n Each 10 credit module requires 20 hours contact time with your tutor. This means

that you attend a 2 hour class for 10 weeks for each modulen Therefore in order to achieve 20 credits you attend 2 x 2 hour classes per week for

10 weeks

You are also strongly encouraged to attend Study Skills Workshops. Good study skills will enable you to acheive your full potential. These help develop your writing, research and referencing skills. For further details, see page 40.

Support for Students with Specific Needs

Study Support

Students returning to study often have particular requirements in terms of study support, so at DACE, we have a wide range of study support services available.

The Study Tips to Achieve Results (STAR) Handbook and the DACE Student Online Support (SOS) learning resources provide advice on how to develop effective study strategies to help you make the most of your higher learning experience.

The STAR Handbook has been designed to identify and develop specific study skills such as time management, preparing a presentation, grammar and punctuation, referencing and how to avoid plagiarism. You will be given the STAR Handbook during the first weeks of the BA Degree Preparation Programme.

The SOS learning resource is another source of help and advice for you and is tailored for those studying at DACE. You can access the SOS site at www.swansea.ac.uk/dace/sos

The SOS site together with the STAR Handbook aim to help students of all abilities and backgrounds reach their full potential.

Study Skills Workshops are also offered throughout the BA Degree Preparation Programme and Study Skills Tutors are always on hand to provide you with the help and support you need. They can offer help on a one-to-one basis, in person, by telephone or by e-mail. The Study Skills Tutors can also offer support for small groups of students around a specific area - such as essay preparation.

Support with IT is also available on request and this can be delivered on a one-to-one basis or for small groups of students who might feel that they need some extra help developing their IT skills.

Financial support is available (subject to individual circumstances) for those students who require childcare or assistance with the care of a family member in order to allow them to attend the BA Degree Preparation Programme in Humanities.

In order to plan any necessary support effectively, we ask that potential students contact us at the earliest opportunity. DACE is committed to providing opportunities to students from all walks of life and every effort is made to allow everyone to attend and enjoy our courses.

If you do not meet any of the criteria above, you can still apply for Financial Contingency Funding. This is not means tested and is operated in conjunction with the Student Support Office at Swansea University. You can apply if you are new to Higher Education and enrol for and complete modules with a combined credit total of between 12 and 59 credits.

You will not be eligible for this funding if you have previously received this financial support and have HNC/HND equivalent or higher qualification. Previous study with DACE may also be classed as previous experience of Higher Education.

How do I apply?

Please complete the application form at the end of this brochure and return it to Paul Dicks at the address on the back page. Please fill in all sections as fully as possible ensuring that the correct module codes are included. Please note that each module code is different and is linked to individual venues. Whilst students can enrol during the first session of the course it is advisable to pre-enrol using the attached application form.

When you are completing your application form, please refer to page 47.

Why should I provide a reserve choice?

Some courses fill up very quickly and in some instances we may ask you to attend your third module choice. You will be informed of changes to arrangements in good time. However, in order to ensure you study your preferred modules please return the application form as soon as possible. Your reserve choice will be automatically selected if any of the courses you have chosen are full or have low student numbers.

Some Questions Answered

What qualifications do I need?

There are no formal entry requirements for the BA Degree Preparation Programme in Humanities. There are many reasons why you might decide to enrol . You may want to update previous skills, develop your qualifications, improve your career opportunities, or simply try something different and meet new people.

How will my work be assessed?

Assessment is made on the basis of essays, short pieces of written work, journals and/or informal presentations submitted during the course. Examinations do not form part of the assessment of any of the modules. In addition to this, your participation in and overall contribution to class-room discussions is taken into consideration.

How much will it cost?

At DACE, we do not want lack of finances to be a barrier to anyone wanting to prepare for Higher Education (HE). With the support of Higher Education Funding Council for Wales (HEFCW), Swansea University offers a fee waiver scheme for eligible students. However, if you already have a first degree, including Foundation Degree or HNC/HND or other undergraduate credit-bearing higher education award funded by HEFCW you will not be eligible for a fee waiver. Neither will you be eligible for funding to repeat a module regardless of credit achievement.

If you meet at least one of the conditions set out below you do not pay for the BA Degree Preparation Programme:

1. Your family is in receipt of Income Support or Income based Jobseekers allowance or Housing benefit or Pension Credit or Council Tax benefit or Working Tax Credit

2. You are in receipt of Severe Disablement Allowance or Disability Living Allowance or Attendance Allowance or Incapacity Benefit or Carer’s Allowance

3. You are a registered job seeker, and have been so for a continuous period of no less than six weeks prior to the date of application for fee waiver

4. Your sole family income is through Department for Work and Pensions benefits

5. Your sole family income is through means tested benefits.

You must provide DACE with official documentary evidence of your entitlement on application. If your situation changes during the Programme you must contact us immediately.

Mae’n rhaid i chi gyflwyno tystiolaeth ddogfennol i AABO o’ch hawl pan fyddwch yn gwneud cais. Os yw eich sefyllfa’n newid yn ystod y rhaglen mae’n rhaid i chi gysylltu â ni ar unwaith.

Os nad ydych yn bodloni unrhryw un o’r meini prawf uchad, gallwch wneud i cais o hyd i’r Cronfeydd Ariannol Wrth Gefn. Nid yw hwn yn destun prawf modd, ac fe’i gweithredir mewn cydweithrediad a Swyddfa Cymorth i Fyfyrwyr Prifysgol Abertawe. Gallwch wneud cais os ydych yn newydd i Addysg Uwch a chofrestru am fodylau a’u cwblhau gyda chyfanswm sy’n werth rhwng 12 a 59 credyd.

Ni fyddwch yn gymwys am yr arian hwn os ydych wedi derbyn cymorth ariannol eisoes ac mae gennych HNC/HND cyfwerth neu gymhwyster uwch. Gall astudio gydag AABO yn y gorffennol hefyd gael ei ystyried fel profiad blaenorol o Addysg Uwch.

Sut ydw i’n gwneud cais?

Cwblhewch y ffurflen gais yng nghefn y llyfryn hwn a’i dychwelyd at Paul Dicks yn y cyfeiriad ar y dudalen gefn. Cwblhewch gymaint â phosib o bob adran gan sicrhau bod codau cywir y modylau wedi’u cynnwys. Sylwer bod cod pob modiwl yn wahanol ac yn gysylltiedig â lleoliadau unigol. Er gall myfyrwyr gofrestru yn ystod sesiwn gyntaf y cwrs, fe’ch argymhellir i gofrestru o flaen llaw drwy ddefnyddio’r ffurflen gais sydd ynghlwm.

Wrth gwblhau eich ffurflen gais, cyfeiriwch at dudalen 47.

Pam y dylwn gynnwys dewis wrth gefn?

Mae rhai cyrsiau’n llenwi’n gyflym ac weithiau byddwn yn gofyn i chi fynychu modiwl sy’n drydydd ddewis i chi. Cewch wybod am unrhyw newidiadau i’r trefniadau mewn da bryd. Serch hynny, er mwyn sicrhau eich bod yn astudio’r modiwlau o’ch dewis, dychwelwch y ffurflen gais cyn gynted â phosib. Bydd eich modiwl wrth gefn yn cael ei ddewis yn awtomatig os bydd unrhyw gwrs yr ydych wedi’i ddewis yn llawn neu os mai nifer bach o fyfyrwyr yn unig sydd wedi’i ddewis.

Atebion i Rai Cwestiynau

Pa gymwysterau sydd eu hangen arnaf?

Nid oes gofynion mynediad ffurfiol ar gyfer y Rhaglen Paratoi ar gyfer BA yn y Dyniaethau. Mae sawl rheswm pam y byddwch am gofrestru ar gyfer y rhaglen hon. Efallai eich bod am ddiweddaru hen sgiliau, datblygu eich cymwysterau neu wella eich cyfleoedd gyrfaol, neu yn syml er mwyn rhoi cynnig ar rywbeth gwahanol a chwrdd â phobl newydd.

Sut y bydd fy ngwaith yn cael ei asesu?

Cewch eich asesu drwy gyflwyno traethodau, darnau ysgrifenedig byr, dyddlyfrau a/neu ar gyflwyniadau anffurfiol a wnaed yn ystod y cwrs. Nid yw arholiadau’n rhan o’r cynllun asesu ar gyfer unrhyw un o’r modiwlau. Yn ogystal â hyn, mae eich cyfranogiad cyffredinol i drafodaethau’r ystafell ddosbarth yn cael ei ystyried.

Beth fydd y gost?

Yn AABO, nid ydym am i brinder arian fod yn rhwystr i unrhyw un sy’n dymuno paratoi ar gyfer Addysg Uwch (AU). Gyda chymorth Cyngor Cyllido Addysg Uwch Cymru (CCAUC), mae Prifysgol Abertawe’n cynnig cynllun hepgor ffioedd i fyfyrwyr cymwys. Fodd bynnag os oes gradd gennych yn barod, gan gynnwys Gradd Sylfaen neu HNC/HND neu unrhyw ddyfarniad addysg uwch a ariannwyd gan CCAUC sy’n dwyn credydau, ni fyddwch yn gymwys ar gyfer hepgoriad ffioedd. Ni fyddwch chwaith yn gymwys ar gyfer ariannu i ailadrodd modiwl, dim ots beth yw’ch llwyddiant credyd:

Os ydych yn bodloni o leiaf un o’r amodau a osodir isod nid oes rhaid i chi dalu ar gyfer y Rhaglen Paratoi am BA yn y Dyniaethau:

1. Mae eich teulu’n derbyn Cymhorthdal Incwm neu Lwfans Ceiswyr Gwaith yn seiliedig ar incwm neu Fudd-dal Tai neu Gredyd Pensiwn neu Fudd-dal Treth y Cyngor neu Gredyd Treth Gwaith

2. Rydych yn derbyn Lwfans Anabledd Difrifol neu Lwfans Byw i’r Anabl neu Lwfans Gweini neu Fudd-dal Analluogrwydd neu Lwfans Gofalwr

3. Rydych yn geisiwr gwaith cofrestredig, ac wedi bod am gyfnod di-dor heb fod yn llai na chwe wythnos cyn dyddiad eich cais am hepgoriad ffioedd.

4. Daw eich incwm teulu’n gyfan gwbl drwy fudd-daliadau’r Adran Gwaith a Phensiynau

5. Daw eich incwm teulu’n gyfan gwbl drwy fudd-daliadau ar sail prawf moddion

“After giving up my job nearly 3 years ago to become a mother I was ready to get my future back on track. I was told about the Part-time Degree by a friend and rang staff at DACE to find out more. I was obviously extremely nervous about starting something completely different but I took the opportunity of enrolling on the BA Degree Preparation Programme. The staff at DACE were extremely helpful and even arranged and paid for the childcare of my youngest son whilst I studied during the 10 weeks. The tutors understood that studying was all new to me and that it had been a while

since I had taken part in any kind of learning. I found the course fun and I always looked forward to the weeks ahead and what new information I was going to learn.

I am now in my first year of the BA (Hons) Part-time Degree in Humanities in Townhill studying psychology and sociology. The BA Degree Preparation Programme really gave me the confidence I lacked to try and further myself and I would seriously recommend it to anyone.”

Jennie Welch

“I had looked at the possibility of returning to education for a long time. I left school with just GCE ‘O’ levels but was afraid to commit myself to a long period of study in case I wasn’t capable of it. When I found out about the BA Preparation Programme, it seemed ideal. Taking two lessons a week for ten weeks was something I knew I could manage and at the end of it, I would know if doing a degree was for me or not.”

Carol Inclan

We enjoyed it - You will too!

Over the years, students have been encouraged to join the BA Degree Preparation Programme to help them make an informed decision about taking up the Part-time Degree in Humanities. Many students find the BA Degree Preparation Programme an ideal starting point to their higher education journey. But don’t take our word for it, please read the students’ stories below…

“For a long time I had been looking at getting back into education but with various other commitments I didn’t have the time. Then unfortunately I had a motorcycle accident with the result that I was off work. During this time I attended a local event where I met staff from DACE; we chatted and I discovered the BA Degree Preparation Programme. It was just perfect for me - not only did it give me something to do whilst I was recovering; it also opened the doors for me to return to education in a nice gradual way rather than being ‘thrown in at the deep-end’.

As you can imagine I was very nervous going back to study many years after leaving school, but those nerves were unfounded. On my first day I was greeted with a smile, given loads of really helpful information and then met my lecturer - wow, what a character, he really made the classes fun whilst still being very informative.Ten weeks later (trust me when I say it flew by) my essays were handed in, marked and returned to me. I went from not having done an essay since school to successfully completing 2 essays, carrying out research, increasing my knowledge and really enjoying every minute of it.

I am now in my first year of the BA (Hons) Part-time Degree in Humanities. Without the BA Degree Preparation Programme I wouldn’t have realised I could study for a degree around my normal working life. I am looking forward to learning more, meeting some amazing people and best of all, having fun. All of this has been made easier and more accessible because of the BA Preparation Programme I took part in last year.”

“Ar ôl rhoi’r gorau i’m swydd bron i 3 blynedd yn ôl i fod yn fam roeddwn i’n barod i ailgydio yn yr awenau. Cefais wybod am y Radd Ran-amser gan ffrind a ffoniais staff yn AABO i gael gwybod rhagor. Yn amlwg roeddwn i’n hynod o nerfus ynghylch dechrau rhywbeth gwbl wahanol ond cymerais y cyfle i gofrestru ar y Rhaglen Paratoi am BA yn y Dyniaethau. Roedd y staff yn AABO yn hynod o gynorthwyol a gwnaethant hyd yn oed drefnu a thalu am ofal ar gyfer fy mhlentyn ieuengaf tra bûm yn astudio yn ystod y 10 wythnos. Roedd y tiwtoriaid yn deall bod astudio’n beth newydd i mi a

bod hi wedi bod yn sbel ers i mi gymryd rhan mewn unrhyw fath o ddysgu. Cefais hwyl ar y cwrs ac roeddwn wastad yn edrych ymlaen at yr wythnosau o’m blaen ac at ba wybodaeth newydd y byddwn yn ei dysgu.

Rydw i bellach ym mlwyddyn gyntaf fy Ngradd BA (Anrhydedd) Rhan-amser yn y Dyniaethau yn Townhill yn astudio seicoleg a chymdeithaseg. Rhoddodd y Rhaglen Paratoi am Radd BA y hyder oedd angen arnaf i geisio ymestyn fy hun a byddwn wir yn ei hargymell i unrhyw un.”

Jennie Welch

Roeddem wrth ein boddau - Byddwch chi hefyd!

Dros y blynyddoedd, anogwyd myfyrwyr i ymuno â’ Rhaglen Paratoi am Radd BA yn y Dyniaethau i’w helpu i wneud penderfyniad gwybodus ynglŷn ag ymgymryd â’r Radd Ran-amser yn y Dyniaethau. Mae nifer o fyfyrwyr yn gweld y Rhaglen Paratoi am Radd BA yn y Dyniaethau fel man cychwyn delfrydol i’w taith addysg uwch. Ond peidiwch â chymryd ein gair ni, darllenwch y straeon isod gan fyfyrwyr...

“Bûm yn ystyried dychwelyd at addysg am amser maith ond gyda chymaint o ymrwymiadau eraill doedd dim amser gen i. Yna yn anffodus cefais ddamwain beic modur ac o ganlyniad roeddwn i ffwrdd o’r gwaith am gyfnod. Yn ystod y cyfnod hwn mynychais ddigwyddiad lleol lle cwrddais â staff o AABO; cawsom sgwrs a darganfyddais y Rhaglen Paratoi am Radd BA yn y Dyniaethau. Roedd hi’n fy siwtio’n berffaith - rhoddodd rhywbeth i mi wneud tra’r oeddwn yn gwella; a hefyd agorodd y drysau i mi ddychwelyd at addysg yn raddol yn hytrach na chael fy ‘nhaflu i mewn yn y pen dwfn’.

Fel y gallwch ddychmygu roeddwn yn nerfus iawn ynghylch mynd yn ôl i astudio gymaint o flynyddoedd ar ôl gadael yr ysgol, ond nid oedd unrhyw reswm dros fod yn nerfus. Ar fy niwrnod cyntaf cefais fy nghyfarch â gwên, a chefais lwyth o wybodaeth ddefnyddiol tu hwnt ac yna cwrddais â’m darlithydd - dyna i chi gymeriad! Mi wnaeth y dosbarthiadau’n hwyl ond yn addysgiadol iawn ar yr un pryd.

Deg wythnos yn ddiweddarach (credwch fi wnaeth hi hedfan heibio) roedd fy nhraethodau wedi’u cyflwyno, eu marcio a’u dychwelyd i mi. Doeddwn i heb ysgrifennu traethawd ers yr ysgol a nawr dyma fi’n cwblhau 2 draethawd yn llwyddiannus, yn cynyddu fy ymwybyddiaeth ac yn mwynhau pob munud.

Rydw i bellach ym mlwyddyn gyntaf fy Ngradd BA (Anrhydedd) Rhan-amser yn y Dyniaethau. Heb y Rhaglen Paratoi am Radd BA yn y Dyniaethau ni fyddwn wedi sylweddoli bod modd i mi astudio am radd o gwmpas fy mywyd gwaith arferol. Rydw i’n edrych ymlaen at ddysgu mwy, at gwrdd â phobl anhygoel a gorau oll, at gael hwyl. Mae hyn i gyd wedi’i wneud yn haws ac yn fwy hygyrch oherwydd y Rhaglen Paratoi am BA y cymerais ran ynddi’r llynedd.”

Alan king

“Edrychais ar y posibilrwydd o ddychwelyd i addysg am flynyddoedd lawer. Gadewais yr ysgol gyda lefelau ‘O’ TAG ond roedd ofn arnaf ymrwymo i gyfnod astudio hir, rhag ofn na fyddwn yn gallu ei wneud. Pan gefais wybod am y Rhaglen Baratoi ar gyfer BA Dyniaethau, roedd yn ddelfrydol. Roedd mynd i ddwy wers yr wythnos am ddeg wythnos yn rhywbeth y byddwn yn gallu ei wneud ac ar ddiwedd y rhaglen, byddwn yn gwybod a oedd gradd yn addas i mi neu beidio.”
