Words from the LTG

Let me just say I am so proud of all of the amazing clubs I

get to serve. I almost died when I added up all of our service

hours. Can you believe in four months we got over 2,350 ser-

vice hours!! I just couldn’t believe how well we did! I was so

shocked and surprised and you all make me so happy to serve

you.

I know that the fall season is starting and it is going to get

busy, but please please continue to be amazing and to do

amazing things. It will be difficult, but if we continue to work to-

gether then there shouldn’t be any problems we can’t solve.

There is some good things in the fall as well, like FALL RALLY! Iyi-

yiyiyiy! Who’s excited for that?! I know I am! There’s also our Re-

gion Training Conference! Iyiyiyiyiy! This Fall is going to be great,

I can already feel it.

Last month I had the honor of visiting the clubs in Winne-

mucca, Elko, and Spring Creek. It was over 600 miles of driving

but it was so worth it. I know most of you haven’t met them yet,

but we’ll hopefully see them for Fall Rally!

Just keep serving, just keep serving.

What do we do? We serve!

Club of the Month

Pg 3

North Valleys Key Club

This club is nestled

away in the mountains of

Reno/ Sparks. Being one

of the furthest clubs

away from everything is

not an excuse for this

club. They have at-

tended every DCM and

are on track to becom-

ing Diamond Distin-

guished.

They have at-

tended a majority of the

division events this last

month, as well as

planned their three of

their own!

Their officers are constantly on top of

everything and are amazing at communica-

tion! Thank you so much North Valleys for be-

ing in D23 because you are a wonderful club

to have. Keep it up!

People of the Month

Pg 4

Member: Sawako Sentoku

Officer: Briana Lazaro

Briana Lazaro is the

phenomenal president from the

North Valleys Key Club. Not only

is she a powerhouse leader who

manages to bring most of the

members to most of our events,

she is also good a planning

them. This past month she has

attended four different commu-

nity service events! She is on

track to being a distinguished

officer and I know she will get it!

Sawako Sentoku is one of the most artistic people I

know! She designed our short-

lived 2013 Yeti. She is a great

members at the Earl Wooster Key

Club. She has attended every

D23 event this month and con-

tinues to do her own individual

service. Sawako continues to be

an amazing member, and if she

really puts her mind to it, she can

become a Platinum level mem-

ber!

On July 20, 2013 the Division 23 Of-

ficers, members, and I had the biggest

feud ever. There was lots of yelling and

grabbing and lots of commotion. All

that is totally normal for us here in

Division 23. Especially since the DCM

theme was Family Feud!

The DCM started off like normal.

We discussed many major issues each

club was facing and thought of ways to

solve them in proper manners, we all

enjoyed the Key Club “Shoes” commer-

cial, and even talked about our plan to

take over Fall Rally North. Our plan of

action can not be shared out of our

division, just know that we have a

secret weapon.

After the business is when things

started to go crazy. Everyone split off

into their collective families: The Minion,

Hugga-Flakka, McLovin, Half-Eaten-

Banana, and Hoochie Family. The ac-

tual game was rigorous and eventually

the families died out until it was a battle

of the death with the Hoochie Family

and the Half-Eaten Banana Family. The

Hoochie Family eventually took home

the prize of an amazing I <3 DC Shirt

that I bought when I went to ICON.

At the end of the DCM we earned

a lot about the people in the division

we served and learned who the feisty

people are.

Around D23 in 600 Miles Past Events

On July 27th, 2013, Jessica

San Juan, Mickey, Caitlin,

Mickey's family and I took a trip

out to the part of Division 23

that were unchartered territory:

Winnemucca, Spring Creek,

and Elko. The trip was definitely

long, over 600 miles of road and

over 18 hours of driving. It was

definitely an amazing day and

it was full of new friendships and

the discovery of devoted clubs.

The first stop was the Albert

Lowry Key Club in Winnemucca,

Nevada. They have a great ad-

visor who has such creative

fundraising and volunteering

ideas. The next stop was the

Spring Creek Key Club in Spring

Creek, Nevada. It was nice

meeting up again with the

members that had come down

to Reno that helped with the

Special Olympics back in June.

They surprised us with one of

their favorite activities; hiking.

They took us on a mile hike through Lamoille Canyon.

The last club of the day was the Elko Key Club from Elko, Nevada. Their VP was

very friendly, easy to talk to, and capable of practically anything. She was deter-

mined and unstoppable. After visiting all three eastern clubs we headed 300+ miles

back home to Reno and Sparks, Nevada

Circle K Family Fun Festival

Pg 9

The circle K host-

ing of the Family Fun

Festival on July 27,

2013 was definitely

an experience! It did-

n't have a big turn

out as they hoped,

but the other volun-

teers and I had a

great time regard-

less. The people who

went to support had

a blast! I met fellow

key clubbers from the

Wooster HS Key Club

also here in D23. I

spent the day trying

to get to know them

and hopefully build a

better relationship.

We became so close

by the end of the

day, and it made the

event even more

worthwhile.

I manned various

jobs such as advertising

with posters to get any

by standers and people

going about their day to

visit the event. It's actu-

ally quite a hard job! If

you see those people

holding signs advertising

for their store give them

props! It's Tiring and a les-

son learned. The Circle K

members were very nice

and generous to us.

They were watching

over the key clubbers

like big brothers and sis-

ters which was quite

lovely to see. I hope next

year or the next event

would be a big turn out

and more key clubbers

could participate! Family

Fun Festival may not

have been the biggest

turn out but it did pro-

vide experiences for fu-

ture events. (:

Jessica San Juan | D23 Member | North Valleys Key Club

The 93rd Annual CALI-NEV-HA Dis-

trict Convention was held in Reno, NV

this year, which is in the Division 23 area.

I along with other Key Club members

from different clubs in Division 23 took

the time to help set up for the District

Convention. I met up with the Key Club

members and Key Club Assistant Ad-

ministrator, Marshall Roberson, at the Sil-

ver Legacy Casino two days before the

convention to set up and unload the

truck. Most people see the finish project

where everything is neat and tidy,

but this gave some me and the

others the chance to see what goes on

behind the scenes. It wasn’t all just tak-

ing boxes off the truck and bringing them

inside; the boxes had to be sorted based

on purpose. This was definitely a difficult

task for me. The boxes were to be sorted

in different categories such as sales,

meals, pre-registration, audio-visuals, and

many more. Luckily, the boxes were color

coded to make the Key Clubbers jobs

easier; all they needed to know was

which room to put them in and where in

the room to put them. Helping with the

setup gives those helping a better appre-

ciation of all the hard work put into our

As the last few bits of summer comes close to an end, the Galena

High School Key Club Officers are hard at working planning for the

upcoming school year! The officers are finding innovative and crea-

tive ways to recruit brand new Key Club Members and make a

greater impact in the community. The members are are hard at work

planning the the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure hoping for a do-

nation goal of $500.00, spreading word about the effects of breast

cancers, and rallying support for the cause! As all of the Galena Key

Club members are enjoying their last few bits of summer, they are

preparing for a full force, amazing school year with plenty of goals

and and plans for a bright, impactful Key Club!

Galena Key Club

Every day feels like an oven in July. It feels like we could burn our hands if we lay

them on the table for too long. The Summer Family Fun Festival was amazing ex-

cept for the balloons that would pop every few minutes. However, they also

made our day by showing us how important teamwork is when it comes to

blowing and holding balloons. One who is afraid of balloons that would pop

while blowing could hold them instead while the others who are just a little bit

braver could blow them up. With the Key Clubbers from Reed High School,

Christine and Analley, we saw the horrors of the day with balloon explosions

while blowing, dropping the balloons to the ground, and random balloon pops.

Balloons are such remarkable and adorable objects but now, I believe most of

us would take a moment of consideration if we are asked to blow up balloons

again in the summer.

Yeti Points System (YPS) Hi, Yetis! This is Bunny and I am writing this to spread the news about Division 23’s Yeti

Points System (YPS), its history, and how it will be put into effect. YPS was initiated two

years ago during past Lieutenant Governor Alyssa’s term. It went on hiatus during past

Lieutenant Governor McXine’s term, but Marshall suggested to the three EAs that we res-

urrect it. I took it into consideration and decided it would be a great idea for our division

to have YPS back. YPS serves a couple purposes:

Fun competition

Increased attendance and participation from clubs

Grounds to identifying clubs/members that deserve Club/Member of the Month

And with this system, responsibilities are accounted for. By that, I mean each EA

must monitor certain clubs so that not all the work of tallying points, figuring out who went

to which event, etc. falls on one EA. Kevin Terral monitors clubs in the Spring Creek/Elko

area: Spring Creek, Albert Lowry, Elko. Jhana Fry monitors clubs in the Reno/Sparks area:

Wooster, Sparks, Spanish Springs, Reno. And Bunny Mo monitors clubs in the Reno/Sparks

area: Galena, Reed, Hug, North Valleys.

Now to explain the distribution of points. As all Key Clubbers know, members are on

the very top of the inverted pyramid and that is the reason why members will receive

more points than officers—no offense. It is highly recommended that officers attend as

many Key Club events as they can, but we can’t forget how important members are! In-

stead of words, here is a table to display the points system.
