Melodies of Compassion

April Focus Tierra Nueva

Thirty years ago, the ministry of Tierra Nueva was founded in Honduras. The outreach and work of Tierra Nueva centered around preventative medicine, sustainable farming, and Bible study. The founders, Bob and Gracie Ekblad, originally came from the Skagit Valley; and when they returned, they expanded the work of Tierra Nueva to the Valley, including the cities of Burlington and Mount Vernon, the Skagit County Jail and Juvenile Detention, visits to the prison in Monroe, and families in their homes and migrant camps. Sand Point Community Church has supported this ministry in the past; and Tierra Nueva in the Skagit Valley will receive the Melodies of Compassion collections for April. The people served by this great organization were described in a recent communication by Bethany Hiser, Women’s Lead for Discipleship: [Our] “ministry sits at the nexus of two national conversations: mass incarcerations and immigration rights. This year we have been increasingly clarifying that our main focus are folks affected by these two systems. We meet people through chaplaincy in the jail, juvenile detention, state prisons, gang ministry, our drop-in family support center, our church community, and a writing group with migrant youth.” The ministry is sustained by the daily hands-on and spiritual involvement of staff who work on root issues through prayer, programs for addiction recovery, accompanying people to appointments, helping with housing and employment barriers, and discipling whole families, In this time of increased pressure on persons of immigrant status, we can support the work of Jesus’ Gospel teachings by reaching into our pockets for Tierra Nueva and harmonizing our resources with their needs.

Fellowship Hour

Thank you for the hospitality of our Good Shepherd teams and all who contribute to our fellowship hour refreshments after worship. Per a suggestion from Church Council, we will be introducing a voluntary donation basket in Perry Hall to maintain the coffee, tea and miscellaneous refreshment supplies that support the fellowship time that we enjoy. As we trial this suggestion, please know that our hospitality will always be extended to all! Thank you!

A Thank You for a Successful Parents’ Night Out

Thank you to all who helped make our March Parents' Night Out a success! Seventeen kids came and had a great time creating springtime themed artwork, playing games, and enjoying time all together. A special thank you to Kathy Warnaca, Bella Flaccus, Kathryn Jacobson, Brittany Erickson, and Meredith McVicar.

It has been an absolute delight to see the children creating friendships with one another and our SPC members volunteering their time and energy to make meaningful connections with neighborhood families outside of our own church community.

Please mark your calendars for our next Parents' Night Out on June 23rd from 5-8pm! If you are interested in knowing more about Parents' Night Out or would like to find out ways that you can participate, please contact Sarah Ritchey at [email protected] or the church office at 206-523-3040.
