Welcome to Sail Sand Point, Seattle’s Community Boating Center ; a non-profit 501(c)(3) begun in 1998 by people passionate about making the sport of sailing available and accessible to everyone. Our mission is to provide water access for people of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds. We accomplish our mission by nurturing self-confidence, practicing leadership, and garnering an appreciation for our marine environment. Sail Sand Point offers a wide range of camps for youth and courses for adults as well as boat rentals through our open boating program. Camps this year will be available in four locations at Shilshole Bay, Mercer Island, Kirkland, and Magnuson Park.

This year we are offering some fun new classes including ‘Big Boats’ which includes instruction on our SB3s, and ‘Junior Explorers’ which is an expansion of our popular Adventure Camp. In partnership with our new neighbor Cascade Bicycle Club we are adding a youth camp which incorporates biking and sailing. Our Open Boating program has been updated for better safety and revamped to make it easier to rent our equipment. You can review the changes on page 12. We are also proud to offer more instruction for sailboat users by introducing free refresher classes on the weekends.

Over the past 16 years of programming, Sail Sand Point has tremendously increased its reach into the community. In 2014 alone over 6,300 sailors and paddlers participated in programs at SSP. The fact that this overall attendance number has increased every year is a great source of pride for us. The tireless efforts of our staff and volunteers to help grow the boating community and maintain water accessibility is helping more and more Seattleites experience Lake Washington and Puget Sound.

The changes to our programs will make 2015 an exciting year for Sail Sand Point. We are thrilled to continue to grow as an organization in 2015 and to welcome more people to our community.

See you on the water!

Sail Sand Point’s teaching model is based on the US Sailing motto: “Safety, Fun, and Learning.” Sailors who feel safe have a better sailing experience which involves engaged learning and improved information retention. We focus on providing a safe and intentional environment because we care that people in our programs are empowered to learn to the best of their abilities. This focus not only makes us a national leader in sailing education, it also ensures that people have a good experience in our programs. Our programs are designed to not only to teach people how to sail but to help them discover that sailing is a fulfilling lifelong activity.

Sail Sand Point is exceptionally safety and training focused. This starts with the instructors and the training we require of them. All of our instructors are US Sailing Level I certified (a rigorous national small boat instructor training program) and are First Aid/CPR/AED certified. Many have years of personal sailing and teaching experience as well as an intimate knowledge of SSP’s programs and teaching philosophy. Student to instructor ratios vary depending on the age group and camp. Some classes, such as Junior Opti, require a great deal of instructor oversight, so the student to instructor ratio is as low as 5:1. Advanced classes may only require one instructor for every 10 students.

Sail Sand Point uses age, weight, and prior experience as guidelines to help every child find the right class or program and have the best experience possible. If a parent feels that an exception to these requirements should be made for their child please contact the office. However, if a child is placed in a class that is too advanced for them we will ask them to switch to a different class. SSP cannot refund tuition once a course begins. Sail Sand Point only teaches students age 5 and up but younger children are welcome to participate in our other programs (such as Open Boating) as long as they are accompanied by an experienced adult.

All youth camps are offered as either full-day (9am-4pm) for one week, or half-day (9am-noon or 1pm-4pm) for one or two weeks. Full day camps incorporate a lunch break. Students must remain with camps during lunch and need to provide their own food. Sail Sand Point does not offer before or after camp care.

On the first day, all youth classes (except for Mommy & Me) require sailors to participate in a swim check and a capsize drill. Instructors oversee and explain both of these drills beforehand to the students. The swim check consists of participants swimming a minimum of 20 feet without a life-jacket, briefly treading water, and then putting on their life-jacket in the water. Students who are unable or unwilling to participate in either of these drills cannot join their class on the water until they complete the requirements. Please ensure that your child is comfortable completing a swim check before registering for a course since SSP cannot refund the tuition once a course begins.

Sail Sand Point is pleased to run classes in a variety oflocations around Seattle. All of our classes are run by the same staff and use the same curriculum regardless of the site.

Sail Sand Point has had programs in Kirkland and Mercer Island for several years. Sail Sand Point is also very proud to be working with the Corinthian Yacht Club of Seattle to offer programs at Shilshole Bay for the second straight year.

Unfortunately, it is not possible to offer all of our courses at every location. Please read over the courses available at the sailing center closest to you. If you don’t find what you are looking for there, come to Magnuson Park for our whole range of classes. For complete descriptions please see the appropriate sections of the program book.

OPEN BOATINGSail Sand Point is pleased to open our facility to qualified sailors, and paddlers through our Open Boating Program. Similar to boat rentals, this program allows the community to use boats from our fleet when they are not being used in other programs. Sailors who demonstrate sailing proficiency can check out a sailboat with an annual pass or pay by the hour. Kayak and paddleboards are available to rent without a skills proficiency test. Our main goal through Open Boating is that boat users will become part of our community, helping us realize our mission of providing water access to all.

ruleS

1. All Open Boating participants are REQUIRED to wear a lifejacket at ALL TIMES. 2. Each participant MUST have a Medical/Liability Waiver on file for the current year. If the participant is under 18, the waiver MUST be signed by a parent or legal guardian prior to using our boats-- no exceptions!3. SSP maintains specific boundaries on Lake Washington for safety reasons. Please be aware of the boundaries before getting on the water. 4. We do not take reservations, all rentals are available on a first come, first serve basis. Boat use is limited to two hours if there is a wait list.

SkillS teSt: Sailing profiCienCy

A sailor must pass a Skills Proficiency Test facilitated by an instructor before using sailboats. Separate skills tests must be performed for each sailboat type as well as for different wind conditions. Skills Tests are sometimes limited due to instructor availability, volume of current skills tests, and weather especially on busy weekend afternoons. Skippers who are not ready to complete a Skills Test can sign up for one of our classes or take a refresher course.

StepS of a SkillS profiCienCy teSt

1. Rig the boat without assistance2. Leave the dock safely3. Sail upwind (with 2-3 tacks)4. Sail downwind (with 2-3 gybes)5. Capsize and recovery (No dry capsizing)6. Return to dock safely

Multiple violations of Open Boating procedures may result in suspension of boat use privileges.
