Preface
My interest in cymbidiums started in 1997 from
a purchase of a few cymbidium hybrids. Blooming plants
were brought from the high mountains in Chiangmai, the
northern province of Thailand, and sold at Jatujak Market
in Bangkok. Those plants never bloomed again and quickly
died a few months later during the monsoon. But my curiosity
was aroused, and a passion for this type of orchid encouraged
me to learn about the nature of cymbidiums.
Fortunately, the age of information technology has
shrunk the world and helped me find the technical book
of this genus, The Genus Cymbidium by David Du Puy and
Phillip Cribb. This doctoral thesis of David Du Puy has
provided a great foundation for my early knowledge in
cymbidium species.
Back then, anyone who tried to grow cymbidiums
in the tropics, like the central plain of Thailand, probably
would be considered crazy. But this was an understandable
viewpoint, since the concept of heat tolerant cymbidiums
was relatively new and known only to a few people.
After years of collecting, growing and hybridizing,
I believe Thailand has a potential to develop heat tolerant
cymbidiums in its own style. The country also has an
advantage in that it is located near the geographical centre
of cymbidium distribution. During the genesis of this book,
several species such as C. chloranthum, C. rectum, C. tigrinum
and C. roseum were found as new records, and C. wadae as
a new species to the country.
The work on heat tolerant cymbidium hybridization
has made me realize the impact of the ‘Paradigm Shift,’
which was a phrase I first learnt during my study in the US.
By tearing down old limitations and beliefs, one can realize
that almost anything is possible; it is just a matter of time.
In addition to this optimism and openness to new ideas, the
work on cymbidiums has helped me with valuable friendships
developed during the field trip trekking, orchid shows,
nursery visits, information exchanges and discussions. It is
great fun and great to learn.
The intention of this book is to provide knowledge to
interested people and perhaps change their old perspectives
about cymbidiums. There are indeed types of cymbidiums that
thrive in the heat. I hope this knowledge will help stimulate
enthusiasm about Cymbidium and its potential for new
directions.
Lastly, this book is not 100% perfect. The data and
information contained is only as good as current knowledge;
new discoveries or experiments may bring new insights.
However, the book certainly provides a good foundation for
truly understanding Heat Tolerant Cymbidiums.

Cymbidiums
With the mention of cymbidiums, most people think of
cool-growing orchids with large fleshy flowers of various bright
colours, their lips marked with intriguing intensely-coloured
spots and blotches. Obviously, cymbidiums provide truly
eye-catching blooms with long lasting qualities that have made
them long-time popular cut flowers.
Leaves of most cymbidiums are soft, long and narrow
with glossy texture, neatly arranged alternately. This offers a
serene beauty of grass-like elegance, giving the plants a look
distinct from other orchid genera.
Because cymbidium foliage has a regal appearance
with the large, colourful and long-lasting blooms, and ease
of maintenance, it is one of the most successful and popular
orchid crops in floriculture. However, this popularity is limited
to the temperate climate zones such as Europe, USA, Japan,
Korea, China, New Zealand and Australia. This cool temperature
requirement results from the fact that most commercial
hybrids are derived from species collected from the Himalayas,
the highlands of Burma, Vietnam and China. Additionally, the
commercial requirements of large flowers on strong spikes with
long lasting blooms are qualities mostly traceable to those spe-
cies from cooler climates.
With their many desirable features, the cymbidiums
have earned the highest value of orchid cut-flowers in auction
market of the Netherlands. In 2007, United Flower Auctions in
The Netherlands report that the overall market value of orchid
cut flowers was 77,500,000 Euro. Cut cymbidiums led with a
total value of 71,000,000 Euro or nearly 92% of the total market.
A distant second was cut phalaenopsis with a value of 2,000,000
Euro and cut vandas were third at 1,000,000 Euro in total.
Currently, smaller varieties of cymbidium have
become significant crops for pot plant market. They have been
bred in numerous forms and styles such as arching, pendulous
(cascading) and oriental.
Today, centres of production and hybridization are
located only in the temperate-climate zones such as California,
Australia, Japan and The Netherlands. In the future, there is a
good possibility that Yunnan and many big cities of China such
as Shanghai, Chengdu and Guangzhou will be included.

Heat Tolerant Cymbidiums
Traditionally, the cymbidium blooming season starts
after the night temperatures have dropped significantly, from
late autumn to mid spring. Literally, there were no cymbidium
blooms during the summer. This void sparked attempts to select
and breed cymbidiums that do not require a distinct chill to
induce flowering and spike development. Reducing the chill
requirement had the additional advantage of alleviating the
problem of bud drop among those blooms in early autumn and
late spring when chill temperatures are not constant enough.
This kind of demand led the way to create cymbidiums
that have warmth tolerance even in temperate climates where
heat is not so intense. Concurrently, the interest in cymbidiums
among growers in tropical climates has heightened and they
demand varieties with ability to withstand intense heat. This
requires a Heat Tolerant Cymbidium.
At present, the definition of Heat Tolerant Cymbidium
is vague. There has been no definitive scale for various degrees
of heat tolerance and, indeed, heat is all relative. In this book,
I delineate two groups as follows.
1. Heat Tolerant Cymbidium (HTC) (Cymbidium with High Heat Tolerance)
HTCs are the cymbidiums that will bloom in a truely
tropical climate, generally located between latitude 17° N and
17° S. This is the area where there is no discernible winter and
no period of time where the night temperatures fall below 18°C
(64°F) continuously for a week or more during the year.
Usually, when grown in the tropical zones, HTCs have a
wider blooming season or they can bloom sporadically through-
out the year. However, their blooming season will be increasingly
specific when grown in areas with more pronounced seasons
such as sub-tropical or temperate zones. In those regions, HTCs
would bloom from mid summer to the end of autumn.
Note, however, that cold tolerance is reduced as heat
tolerance increases. Cold damage to HTC plants, exposed to
near freezing temperature for an extended period of time, will
be greater than that seen on the standard and cool-growing
types.
2. Warmth Tolerant Cymbidium (WTC) (Cymbidium with Partial Heat Tolerance)
WTCs are cymbidiums that can bloom in climates
without intense heat such as sub-tropical zone, generally located
between 17° N and 30° N and 17° S and 30° S. This is the area
where winter is more pronounced than in the tropical zone,
and there is a certain period of time during the year when night
temperatures fall below 18°C (64°F) continuously for up to
several months.
WTCs usually have more specific blooming season
than HTCs. WTCs can also bloom in both sub-tropical and
temperate zones but there is some shift of blooming time
between the two zones. In temperate zones, WTCs usually bloom
from late summer to early winter. Most WTCs cannot bloom in
tropical zones, those regions between latitude 17°N and 17° S,
but they can grow well vegetatively.
Note, cold tolerance is partially reduced for WTCs.
When exposed to freezing temperatures for an extended period
of time, damage is greater than those of standard and cool-
growing types but less than HTCs.

(Heat Tolerant Cymbidium, HTC)
(Temperate

(Cool-GrowingType)
(Warmth Tolerant Cymbidium, WTC)
(Cool-Growing

In the future, there should be zoning for the area
between latitude 30° N and 30° S, and grading of the degree of
heat tolerance for each variety or clone. This information would
greatly reduce confusion for growers interested in Heat Tolerant
Cymbidiums or Warmth Tolerant Cymbidiums.
Future heat tolerant cymbidiums are well on course
to be highly complex genetically. This will make it harder to
identify precisely their degree of heat tolerance by mere physical
appearance. Knowing their true identity plus expert advice will
be needed to screen out the wrong ones to minimize errors in
purchasing stock unlikely to perform in the conditions where
they will be grown.

Morphology
The genus Cymbidium was first established in 1799
by a Swedish botanist, Peter Olof Swartz. The name came from
the Greek word “cymbid”, meaning “boat” and referring to the
boat-shaped lip.
Cymbidiums are sympodial-type orchids. The
erect stems are swollen and shortened to form prominent
pseudobulbs. Some species have pseudobulbs that are less
swollen and instead more elongated and flattened. In addition,
there is a Cymbidium species growing as rhizomes underneath
the ground.
In general, cymbidiums are viewed as terrestrial
orchids that require soils or soil-like medium to grow, as other
terrestrial plants do. That idea is only partially correct since,
in fact, there are more epiphytic Cymbidium species than
terrestrial Cymbidium species. Some species even can be
found growing lithophytically.
Leaves of most species are long, narrow, thin and flexible
with pointed tip but some of them develop erect, rigid and very
coriaceous leaves. This is a xerophytic characteristic that helps
plants to survive adverse conditions. For a heteromycotrophic
or mycoparasitic species, C. macrorhizon, leaves are reduced
to scales on nodes.
Because leaves of cymbidiums are neatly arranged
in a fan-like shape on the top of the pseudobulbs,
cymbidium plants have a graceful and delicate appearance.
Historically, this neat foliage has been more valued than
floral beauty among Chinese, Japanese and Korean cultures.
Inflorescences of Cymbidium species usually carry from
one to more than 60 flowers. Most cymbidium inflorescences
emerge from the base of the bulb but some come out of the
leaf axils. They grow as pendulous, arching or erect spikes.
Flower size ranges from 1.5 centimetres to more than
10 centimetres. Flowers consist of one dorsal sepal, one lip,
two lateral sepals and two petals, which can be either well
open or porrect. The two callus ridges on the mid lobe are the
prominent structures of the lip. Many cymbidiums are
fragrant, though not all are pleasantly fragrant.
Most species have roots covered with white thick
spongy velamen up to 5-8 millimetres in size. These roots
usually develop away from light into dark locations. However
some species produce special upright acute roots (Aegotropic
Roots) to trap leaf litter and other debris. This debris helps
keeping moisture around the rootball and releases nutrients
when decomposed.
