Wildcat... he’ll come in motion, he’ll be the tail- back, he’ll be fullback,” said Bladt. “They try to move him all over to get him the ball in different ways, so we’ve just got to be on our toes and pay him attention, that’s for sure.” The old Harlan-Atlantic football rivalry has been one-sided for a long time now with HCHS winning 35 of the last 36 matchups. But it’s still a rivalry, and one only has to look back two years to see what can happen. In their last trip to the Trojan Bowl, a Cyclone team that eventually reached the Class 3A semifinals faced an Atlantic squad that finished 5-4. The game was scoreless at halftime, when HCHS had just 82 yards. The Cyclones eventually pulled away to win 22-0. “They will rise up and play. I don’t expect them to just lay down, there’s no way,” Bladt said. “It’s too much of a rivalry and they’ve got a lot of pride down there in At- lantic, so I think they’re go- ing to play their best football against us and that’s kind of week to week anyway. We’re just going to play it as such and focus on effort.” The Cyclones’ 2-1 start has been marred by inconsisten- cy at times, even in wins of 27-22 at Denison-Schleswig and 34-21 vs. Carroll last weekend. HCHS built a 21-0 lead over the Tigers but had some mental letdowns that helped Carroll score before halftime, then just traded touchdowns the rest of the way. A consistent 48 minutes of effort and execution is the goal against Atlantic. “We’re improving. That’s what we want to keep doing,” Bladt said. “That’s kind of the plan is to focus on the improvement and getting better game to game and playing 100 percent. “Last week we started out hot and then kind of fell flat there at the end of the half and then at the end of the game we were flat again for a while. We would like to play a complete football game for once.” Neither the Cyclones or Trojans are a big football team, but outside of a couple Atlantic defensive linemen - Cale Roller and Gunnar Kirchhoff - that check in at 225 and 220 pounds, HCHS may match up better size- wise than it has with any op- ponent so far this year. Whether that translates to a more potent rushing at- tack remains to be seen. The Cyclones carried the ball 44 times (compared to 13 pass attempts) vs. Carroll last week but were still held to 3.5 yards per rush when all the FieldTurf rubber pellets had settled. Quarterback Johnathan Monson has been the team’s most efficient ball carrier through Week 3, averaging 5.5 yards per carry and scor- ing five touchdowns. Tail- back Brenden Bartley has added four TDs and is now averaging 4.1 yards a crack while fullback Thomas Frederick and tailback Alex Schechinger had some nice gains as well last Friday. Creston and Clarinda have both been able to run and throw the football with great success against the Trojans, so Bladt says the Cyclones will keep their op- tions open offensively. “In any game you’re going to want to take what they’re giving you, so we’ll see what they’re trying to give us and we’ll try to take it,” Bladt said. “It would be nice to establish it on the ground. I think most coaches would want to do that. You get the ground game going and that opens up a lot of other a Hawkeye Ten match at Atlantic (4-14, 0-1 H-10) on Thursday night. They will also compete at the Red Oak Tournament Saturday starting at 8:30 a.m. HCHS opens the day with pool play matches vs. Red Oak and Tri-Center. “We’ve got a quick turn- around. We’ve got to flush (Tuesday),” Baughman said. “(Atlantic is) going to give us a good fight and I told (the girls), ‘We’ve got to do what (Kuemper) did to us.’” Kuemper sweeps HCHS in volleyball Cyclones tune up for 3A district play things, but we’ll take what they give us.” Bladt would also like to see the Cyclones clean some things up in all phases of the game this week - from elimi- nating dumb penalties to better kick coverage to play- ing turnover free. With some tough District 9 games coming up - starting with ADM, Glenwood and Lewis Central the next three Fridays - now is the time to fine tune the operation, says Bladt. “We have to be more dis- ciplined. We’ve got to clean up the penalties a little bit,” he said. “We had a couple of penalties last week that were extending drives [for Carroll] and killing drives [for us], so we’ve got to sharpen that up, eliminate some of the penal- ties and that will help us be able to play a complete game.” Bladt added, “We want to put it on the line this week a little bit. I’m kind of call- ing them out to see if we can get 48 minutes of football and that will get us ready for district play and then it’s murderer’s row. It will be big game after big game at that point.” Harlan Newspapers 1114 7th St. • Harlan • 755-3111
