Rattan Kaur LaliJanuary 1, 1919 – April 28, 2016
Long-time Merritt resident, RattanKaur Lali, passed away peacefully inSurrey at age 97. Rattan is survived bysons Sewak (Gurdev – deceased), Chat-ter (Resham), Gian (Davinder) and for-mer MLA/Minister of TransportationHarry (Rani) and daughters Jagjit (Gur-mit Nann – deceased) and Harbhajan,17 grand-kids, 22 great-grand- kids, 2brothers, 3 sisters, many nieces andnephews. She is predeceased by herhusband and one grand-daughter.
Rattan was born in 1919 in BritishIndia in Village Ghugg, District Hyder-abad, Sindh Province (now in Pak-istan), daughter of Amar S. Phagoora(father) and Maha K. Phagoora(mother), nee Ghagg. Rattan marriedBhagat Singh Lali in 1939. Followingthe 1947 Partition of British India, Rat-tan, her husband and 6-year- old sonmoved from Pakistan to India, initiallysettling in Lalle-Ladhewal, then shift-ing to Village Miranpur, District Ja-landhar, in Punjab State. At Miranpurthey farmed their land and raised sixchildren. In late-1957, her husband im-migrated to Kamloops, B.C. In 1958,Bhagat Singh moved to Merritt. In theSixties and Seventies, he brought Rat-tan and their family to Merritt, BC.From 1972 to 1990, Rattan and her hus-band moved back and forth betweentheir beloved Punjab and their ex-tended family in Merritt. Rattan’s hus-band passed away in 1990 in India.Rattan returned to live in Merritt until2012, then moved to Surrey, BC withone of her sons. On Thursday morn-ing, April 28th, Rattan passed on.
Barely five-foot tall, slim-framedRattan left a giant-sized foot-printwherever she went. Rattan loved life,was fiercely loyal to her Sikh Faith, herGod and to her family. Rattan wasdeeply spiritual, extremely compas-sionate, generous, strong-willed, ener-getic, loved life, made friendseverywhere she went, and touched thelives of countless individuals. Thoughshe will be sadly missed, Rattan ishome with her Creator.
Rattan’s funeral services are onSunday, May 8th at 11am, at RiversideFuneral Home & Crematorium, 7410Hopcott Road, Delta, BC, followed bycelebration of life at 1pm at BrooksideGurudwara, 8365-140th St., Surrey, BC.
