TNRD bio-control program The Thompson-Nicola Regional Dis- trict is partnering with Agrowest Con- sulting to continue to offer its free Bio-Control Program, which helps pri- vate landowners control weeds. For more than 20 years, TNRD has been releasing bio-control insects for knapweed, hound’s-tongue, dalmatian toadflax, leafy spurge, and Canada thistle on private land. The bio-control insects are “host specific” and will not attack na- tive vegetation or even other weedy species. The insects target different parts of an invasive plant — mining the roots, mining the stems, eating the seeds, or de- foliating the leaves. Bio-control is a long- term commitment and therefore ideal release sites are large infestations of a sin- gle species on uncropped (range) land. Agrowest Consulting’s Dr. Catherine Tarasoff consults with private landown- ers regarding site suitability. To receive insects, contact TNRD at (250)377-8673. Also check tnrd.ca for info about other programs to help property owners fight invasive plants. Canada in a Day CTV announced Monday that it has commissioned a 2-hour event broadcast of crowd-sourced photography from Vancouver-based Screen Siren Pictures, to premiere in 2017 in celebration of Canada’s 150th anniversary. Based on the highly successful Life in a Day series of films, Canada In A Day will allow viewers to experience a day in the life of Canada, comprised entirely of footage shot by Canadians across the nation on a single day later this year. Participating Canadians will be asked to shoot and submit video in any lan- guage that captures a moment in their life, on that day — TBA. From these sto- ries, viewers will learn what it means to be Canadian via a video snapshot of who we are as a nation. The filming date, as well as details on how to submit footage, will be an- nounced in the coming months.
