Indian‘s „Scout“ goes Bobber-Style!


It is not the modern styling that stops a lot of customizers working on the „Scout“, nor is it the super-smooth water-cooled motor that delivers a stunning 100+ horses in spectacular fashion: As with the Sportster-powered Buell XB it is the frame and rol-ling chassis which is so quite different that established customizers – and we know how conservative they can be when it

comes to adapt something new – don‘t have much experience how to deal with a multi-piece cast aluminum frame – es-pecially one as radical as the one used in the Indian „Scout“ models. The forward section does not only feature the steering head, but also integrates two downward brackets that hold engine and watercooler – a tough nut to customize, while defining

the design of the forward part of the mo-torcycle. At the rear end, the center sec-tion can be cut free from the fender strut extension, but it also plays an important role in mounting the shocks, swing arm and rear engine/gearbox housing, which CC

When introduced to the public at the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in 2014, the „Scout“ immediately got a lot of attention by the motorcycle world. Here was a complete new motorcy-cle, quick, powerful and very com-pact that adapted one of the most iconic product names of the legen-dary American motorcycle brand. And not just a new motorcycle, it was a fairly radical and modern design which did not compromise 21st century production demands for public demands and the option to customize along long establis-hed paths of a double-loop metal tube frame which allows the com-peting products from Milwaukee to be changed in such a wide variety of styles. with hubs especially created for the Indian „Scout“ versions. To be on the safe side, Indian‘s brake calipers and brake system was retained, featuring a fully functioning ABS. Fitting brake rotors are not too far away from being homologated. With the stock fork performing quite well, the rear shocks were changed for Oehlins adjusta-ble S46 shocks. Riding performance was put to test on the narrow roads of Czech Republic when this year´s CCE music vi-deo „At Night“ was filmed in Southern Mo-ravia – and „Spyke“ performed flawlessly, praised by who ever rode it.

N N NTXT sheet metal fenders front and rear end the myth that is difficult to change the basic look of the „Scout“: Especially the short cut tail end makes a difference from the bigger and more „bulky“ stock fender parts, no matter how „inspired“ they are from the original „Scout“, built from 1920 to 1949. Motogadget „M-Blaze“ indicators act also as brake/taillight, which cleans up the tail end sec-tion considerably, a Cult-Werk side mount license plate bracket re-lo-cating the ugly big license plate of Germany. TXT also offers a Scout-fitting base plate to create a custom seat, which SK-Bikes had built for their interpretation of a cool „bob-bing“ Scout. The seating position as low as stock, handling is much more receptive, since the wide „Beach Bar“ by Highway Hawk spreads the arms of the rider much more than the stock Scout handlebar. Kury-akyn grips and pegs add to the ri-dability, especially when the ride is lasting a longer distance. Kuryakyn also delivered the stylish „Accents“ – satin black mesh design pieces of 6061 aluminum – to highlight some frame and body part sections of the bike. Of the numerous pieces which can be glued to the sides of stock the rear fender, the otherwise rather empty looking sides of the radiator bracketing part of the frame and a pair covering the empty space un-der the seat and next to the rear shock mounting points, only the sw-ing arm and left & right triangular shaped accents in the steering head region were used. The „Sprint“ look chin spoiler, painted to match tank and fenders, is also of Kuryakyn ori-

gin. While the headlight housing is the painted stock original, a Mit JW Speaker 8690A, LED Adaptive 5 3/4“ insert offers additional visibility.

N N N Premiering on this Scout, the BSL „Drag Race Bomb“ features the new and cool looking „outline“ design that gives the bike an „used“ perfor-mance look which compliments the character of this cool little Bobber: Dynojet‘s new Power Commander for Indian has also been integrated into the electrical system. With some 100 horsepower at your command when twisting the throttle – and the engine characteristic unlike anything you may experience on Harley – the „big“ 69 Cubic Inch „Scout“ is one hell of a ride. With the „Scout Six-ty“ only differing in engine size and 5 gears instead of 6, all components used in the customized of „Spyke“ can be mounted to all Scouts. Indi-an itself promotes the customizing of their Scout models quite a bit – so as time passes, there will be more – and more radical versions too – customized „Scouts“. If anything, „Spyke“ marks only the beginning – and a well built too!
