A Brief Biography

Dr. Jac J.W. Andrews

Professor of Child Psychopathology Chair, School and Applied Child Psychology

University of Calgary, and Registered Psychologist in the Province of Alberta In terms of his research, writing, and other scholarly endeavors, Dr. Andrews’ efforts have culminated in an impressive number of research grants, publications, and presentations. The breadth and quality of his work is not only distinguished due to its cohesive focus and strong theoretical and empirical foundations, but also due to the fact that he has been involved in numerous professional organizations and administrative functions, has supervised over 200 graduate students and 300 undergraduate students, and has taught over 15,000 undergraduate and graduate students as a Professor at the Universities of Calgary, and Visiting Professor in Alberta, British Columbia, and Prince Edward Island. In regard to his teaching, Dr. Andrews has twice received the Award of Teaching Excellence from the University of Calgary Student Union as well as the Award of Teaching Excellence from the Faculty of Education, University of Calgary, and the Award of Teaching Excellence from the Undergraduate Society, Faculty of Education, University of Calgary. Moreover, Dr. Andrews has been twice nominated for the 3M Teaching Fellowship Award. Dr. Andrews has also taught in the Public School System across Canada for a number of years. He is a certified teacher in the provinces of Ontario, Saskatchewan, and Alberta. In this capacity he has taught in elementary, junior high, and high schools. Throughout his tenure in public schools he has taught a wide range of students ( aboriginal children, children with learning disabilities, children with mental retardation, children with visual and hearing impairments, children with gifts and talents, children with behavior disorders, and children with anxiety, depression and other childhood disorders) in both regular and special education classrooms.. He has also served as an educational administrator, coordinator, and consultant within and across schools with respect to special and inclusive/diversity education. In addition, Dr. Andrews is a Registered Psychologist in the Province of Alberta. Dr. Andrews’ scholarly focus has been with respect to the areas of special (inclusive) education, effective teaching, social skills intervention, psycho-educational assessment and intervention, educational psychology, child and adolescent psychopathology clinical supervision in psychology, and approaches to teaching and learning. In doing this work, Dr. Andrews has demonstrated high sophistication with respect to writing (for example, peer reviewed journal articles and internationally published textbooks which has involved many of his graduate students) research design (for example, the use of correlation and causal comparative designs) analysis (for example, the use of structural equation modeling techniques), and public dissemination of information in local, regional, and international forums (for example, presentations at the American Educational Research Association, International Association of Special Education, and Canadian Psychological Association).

In terms of his work in the area of special (inclusive) education, Dr. Andrews has edited two books: Teaching Students With Diverse Needs: Elementary Classrooms, and Teaching Students with Diverse Needs: Secondary Classrooms and has co-authored two textbooks with Judy Lupart entitled The Inclusive Classroom Educating Exceptional Children and The Inclusive Classroom: Educating Exceptional Children: Second Edition which have all been published by Nelson Canada. Moreover, Dr. Andrews and some of his colleagues have written a province wide manual for educators entitled Learning Disabilities: A Resource Manual for Teachers, which was sponsored by Alberta Learning, Province of Alberta. Currently, Dr. Andrews is co-authoring/editing another book entitled: Diversity Education: Understanding and Addressing Student Diversity that will also be published by Nelson Canada (2016). He has also published numerous articles and chapters relative to research and practice in the area of inclusive education (for example, Administrative leadership in the age of inclusion: promoting best practices and teacher empowerment ((Journal of Educational Thought, 2010) as well as regular education (for example, Globalization, Internationalization, and Canadian Education, (Canadian Society and Global Perspectives, 2011) In terms of his work in the area of effective teaching, Dr. Andrews has co-edited a textbook entitled Enhancing Learning and Thinking, published by Praeger Publishers in New York. Along with his colleagues, he has published numerous journal articles with respect to cognitive and meta-cognitive processing and many chapters regarding cognitive education, written one instructional manual entitled SPELT: A Strategies Program for Effective Learning and Thinking which has been cited in numerous textbooks and journal articles internationally, produced a number of research reports with respect to the longitudinal examination of cognitive education, produced 2 video tapes regarding strategy instruction, and has presented many conference presentations and workshops as well as in- services with respect to this area. In addition, Dr. Andrews has also published a chapter in the Encyclopedia of Applied Psychology, Volume 3, entitled: Teaching Effectiveness and a peer-reviewed journal article in Medicine, Mind, and Adolescence entitled: “Approaches to Teaching Children and Youth.” In terms of his work in the area of social skills intervention, Dr. Andrews has co-edited a special edition of Exceptionality Canada with Dr. Richard Conte entitled Teaching Social Skills in Schools, written many journal articles and chapters with respect to social skill assessment and instruction (e.g. a practical guide for school counselors of adolescents with regards to conceptualizing and developing social competence, The Alberta Counselor, (2006), and has presented numerous conference presentations regarding social competence and workshops as well as in -services with respect to the facilitation of social skills. In terms of psycho-educational assessment and educational psychology, Dr. Andrews has published many journal articles that have focused on various aspects of cognitive, academic, and personality assessment (e.g. correlation analyses of the WISC-R and Stanford Binet Intelligence Scales as well as a chi square analysis of projective drawing assessments to determine the presence of psychopathology of learning disabled children). Moreover, Dr. Andrews has published reviews of intellectual measures (e.g. the Reynolds Intellectual Assessment Scales) in such journals as Journal of Psycho Educational Assessment. In addition, his work has also

focused on the underlying structures of autism through the use of factor analytic techniques. In addition, he has published articles with respect to such areas as risk factors of depression, and the treatment of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and obsessive-compulsive disorder. Dr. Andrews has also co-edited a textbook on psychological assessment for school psychologists entitled: Handbook of Psycho Educational Assessment (Academic Press, 2001). Moreover, Dr. Andrews has recently co-edited a special edition of the Canadian Journal of School Psychology with respect to theory, research, and practice in school psychology and has recently co-authored two textbook entitled “Principles of Educational Psychology: A Canadian Edition” published by Pearson Canada (2006, 2010). Moreover, Dr. Andrews has published a number of book chapters including a co-written recent chapter in T. Fagan and P. Sachs Wise textbook entitled “School Psychology: Past, Present, and Future”, 3rd edition” published by the National Association of School Psychologists, 2007.In addition, Dr. Andrews has recently published a book entitled: Exceptional Life Journeys: Stories if Childhood Disorder, (Elsevier, 2012). Currently, he has co-edited and authored a book entitled “Diversity Education: Understanding and Addressing Student Diversity” (publication date: 2016, Nelson Canada) and is working on another book entitled “Clinical Judgment in Applied Child and School Psychology: From Assessment to Intervention” (Springer Publishing Company). In terms of his work in clinical supervision in psychology, Dr. Andrews supervises a number of graduate students in school psychology and has published numerous articles relative to clinical supervision (for example, The supervisee experience of group supervision: Implications for research and practice, Training and Education in Professional Psychology,2011) In terms of his work in the area of learning approaches, Dr. Andrews and his colleagues have written many journal articles that have focused on the approaches and strategies students undertake in their approaches to learning. In this regard, Dr. Andrews has validated processes of learning students take in their learning through structural equation modeling techniques. This work is particularly significant due to the potential ability of teachers to examine and discuss with their students the teaching and learning transaction from a coherent and consistent framework of teaching and learning that has theoretical and empirical support. Dr. Andrews has presented numerous conference papers and workshops regarding this subject and is currently completing analysis of data for preparation of further conference presentations and publications with respect to this area of focus ( for example, A validity study of Biggs theoretical model of learning approaches: A confirmatory factor analysis employing a Canadian sample, British Journal of Educational Psychology). In addition to the above research efforts, which have been supported by a variety of sponsoring agencies (for example, Alberta Mental Health, Alberta’s Ministry of Education, Alberta Advisory Committee for Educational Studies), Dr. Andrews has been involved with a number of evaluation projects in a number of areas (for example, Health, Social Service and Justice, Psychology, and Health). In the area of health, Dr. Andrews has done a number of evaluations for the Calgary Regional Health Authority, which includes the evaluation of community health services, the evaluation of chronic pain treatment and services, the evaluation of comprehensive school health services for special needs children, and the evaluation of health technology assessment. In the social services area, Dr. Andrews has evaluated the effect of AADAC within the Province of Alberta with respect to mobile service treatment for children and youth at risk for

alcohol and drug addiction, and the evaluation of adults’ engagement with youth on adults’ attitudes towards youth. In the Justice area, Dr. Andrews has evaluated the effects of custody to community transition programming and services for Calgary and Edmonton young offenders. In the Education area, Dr. Andrews has evaluated the effects of teacher training and development on teacher effectiveness. In the area of Psychology, Dr. Andrews has evaluated the impact of psycho-educational assessment services for independent schools in Calgary. Lastly, in addition to his involvement in many professional associations and his work in a number of professional committees, Dr. Andrews has supervised hundreds of students in their teacher and school psychologist training. Moreover, Dr. Andrews is a Registered Psychologist has been involved in the supervision of many students with respect to their research work which has resulted in the publication of numerous empirically based theses and articles. Lastly, Dr. Andrews served as Chair of the Special Program from 1988 to 1994 in the Department of Educational Psychology at the University of Calgary and as Director or Coordinator from 1995 to 2007 of the School and Applied Child Psychology Program within the Division of Applied Psychology at the University of Calgary. He is currently (2010-Present) Chair of Educational Studies in School Psychology and Director of Training for the Doctoral Program in School and Applied Child Psychology at the University of Calgary. Moreover, he is also a Director of E-Academy 21, a company which has done national and international work relative to various educational projects ( for example, the development and advancement of distributed learning within school environments and the professional development of teachers with respect to diversity education)

Main Purpose of the Role

• To contribute to the overall success of the area, faculty, and university. • To establish a shared strategic vision and mission for the area and the plans necessary

to attain those goals by directing the academic development of the area, ensuring that its programs and academic structures are fit for purpose and are able to leverage advantage to the area, faculty, and university as a whole.

• It is recognized that Chairs will not necessarily personally attend to all of the following. Rather, they should empower others but ensure that, through monitoring and follow-up, effective arrangements are in place and working well. Thus, while academic leadership will often be shared, particularly through the support of the area’s faculty members, the Chair is ultimately accountable for the management of the area.

Main Duties Planning and Strategy Developments

• Lead the area in setting and advancing of the strategic academic direction of the area and develop regular review procedures to monitor implementation of the strategic plan.

• Translate strategic goals into operational plans in the area and lead the implementation of the plan once approved.

• Represent the area through active participation on the Graduate Programs Committee ( GPEC)

• Actively participate on the Deans Advisory Council (DAC). • Develop practices that recognize the need for continuing professional development of

faculty and support succession planning processes. • Effectively manage allocated space. Maintain detailed working knowledge of current

space/resource arrangements for the area. Take an active role in the design of renovations and newly acquired space. Solicit the needs of faculty.

• Determine the most effective steps to be taken in the event of significant change, discuss these with the Associate Dean of Graduate Programs .

Academic Leadership

• Provide overall academic leadership of the area with the aim of maintaining the highest possible standards in teaching and research.

• Lead the process of academic policy and planning for the area. • Maintain and enhance the area’s teaching quality of courses and programs, including

undergraduate and professional courses and programs. • Provide academic oversight on professional courses and programs administered through

the Graduate Professional Programs. • Lead the area in establishing and maintaining a productive, accessible, and well-

regarded learning environment for students.

• Support the promotion and strengthening of the research culture within the area and across areas and faculties where appropriate.

• Encourage the acquisition of research funding, and facilitate leading edge research, scholarship, and teaching of departmental staff and self.

• Organize mentoring for junior faculty in regards to research, teaching, and supervision of graduate students.

• Ensure that statutory requirements are met and that university policies, systems, and procedures are observed and applied.

• Ensure the area meets the standards set by relevant professional bodies. • Facilitate and promote the development of intra- and inter-disciplinary academic

activity. • Ensure all Health and Safety regulations are complied with, and in particular, that staff

take regular breaks from their work, including annual vacations. • Manage teaching coverage in the event of extended absence due to illness of faculty in

the area. • The Chair will develop and maintain a Manual of Policies and Procedures what will list all

administrative policies, as well as keep track of all motions passed at area meetings. • As per the Graduate Calendar, the Chair will organize reappraisal of term work when a

student chooses to appeal a grade

Budget

• Oversee budget for University of Calgary Applied Psychological and Educational Services (UCAPES) clinic ( associated with the School and Applied Child Psychology Program

• The Chair, oversees School and Applied Child Psychology funding for graduate students Communications and External Relations

• Facilitate communication of faculty needs regarding web site design and management with Operations Manager.

• Maintain and improve the reputation of the area at the national and international levels.

• Develop and sustain appropriate structures for consultation, decision-making, and effective two-way communication will all staff.

• Recognize faculty and student achievements; represent the area’s news and interests at the faculty and university levels and to external bodies where appropriate.

• Call and chair area meetings as required to ensure effective consultation. • The Chair shall provide a list of area meetings to members of the area in August of each

year. Extra meetings may be called with at least one week’s advance notice. Area meetings can be cancelled due to lack of agenda items. The regular dates and times of executive meetings shall also be announced, in the event that members of the area wish to present issues at those meetings.

• All current faculty members shall be invited to attend the area meetings. Retired, emeritus, and adjunct members may attend for specific issues with prior agreement of the Chair.

• Develop and promote effective communication processes between the area, students, and central support staff to ensure proper information flows.

• Embed and encourage collegiality, and ensure that appropriate external contacts are fostered; to include contacts with schools, prospective employers, other academic and research organizations, visiting and honorary status, funders, and the business community and government organizations.

• Ensure that all staff has confidential access to their immediate supervisor on matters affecting the area’s functions and activities, or affecting the individuals themselves. Chairs should be available for consultation on any serious matters and should ensure that staff are aware of and can access additional means of support and advice, both internal and external.

• Ensure that faculty act in accordance with the university’s equity policies and are kept up to date on equity and diversity matters relevant to the university
