Statistical and ethnographic data was collected, analyzed, and organized to be used for writing one or more of the following: journal articles, book chapter, and/or book. Programs included substance abuse counseling, employment counseling, operating a thrift store, and organizing churches to provide transportation for families and children to visit mothers incarcerated in the Iowa Prison for Women. Inviting Convicts to College Organized classes taught every semester inside Wisconsin state prisons. The program “Inviting Convicts to College” provided free college course for prisoners at Oshkosh Correctional Institution and Taycheedah Correctional Institution. The program has provided opportunities for research and a series of publications. 2002 Prison Release and Community Reentry in Kentucky Conducted interviews of prisoners inside Kentucky prisons, parole offices, and community corrections centers, and non-profit community residential halfway houses. Studies funded by the Soros Foundation Justice Fund, Open Society Institute, and the Kentucky Department of Corrections. 2001 Reducing America’s Prison Population (with James Austin, Director of the Institute on Crime, Justice and Corrections at The George Washington University, John Irwin, Emeritus Professor San Francisco State University, and Patricia Hardyman, The George Washington University). Study includes tours of ADX Florence and USP Marion. Research is funded by a modest book advance from Southern Illinois University Press. Northern Kentucky University. 2001 A Contemporary Study of Doing Time in America's Prison: A Convict Perspective (with James Austin and John Irwin). This is a large-scale study being organized to interview prisoners in six prisons, in three different states. 1994-present Federal Prison Studies Collecting data for a series of articles and books on the Federal Bureau of Prisons. Now in tenth year of visiting prisoners incarcerated in federal institutions, including USP Leavenworth (KS), FMC Lexington (KY), FCI Morgantown (WV), and FCI Alderson (WV), and ADX and USP Florence (CO). I have now visited or corresponded with over 500 male and female

prisoners, asking questions about the conditions of confinement in federal penitentiaries, correctional institutions, prison camps, and medical centers. Research focuses on prison programs, prison release programs, furloughs, half-way house programs, home confinement, parole and probation supervision. 1994-2004 Prisoner Visitation and Support: Duties include coordinating a group of volunteers visiting male and female prisoners once a month at Federal Medical Center Lexington (medium-security prison). Work includes correspondence with prisoners and federal correctional personnel, and filing reports with the PVS home office in Philadelphia. 1992-1993 Board of Directors for Felons and Community Together (FACT), Cedar Falls-Waterloo, Iowa. Worked with community groups interested in prison reform, prison release, and community reentry. Helped secure funding from government and private foundations for community programs to assist persons coming out of prison. Programs included substance abuse counseling, employment counseling, operating a thrift store, and organizing churches to provide transportation for families and children to visit mothers incarcerated in the Iowa Prison for Women. 1989-1993 Provided support and service to Criminal Justice Ministries, Hanson House-halfway house for released prisoners in Des Moines, Iowa. 1989-1993 Provided support, service, and writing to Bars and Stripes, a publication of the Hanson House, Criminal Justice Ministries, and Iowa prisoners.
