During the last five years, my main research interests have focused on contemporary
challenges of liberal democracies related to Immigration. In particular, within two main
fields: Borders/Human Mobility Studies and Diversity/Citizenship studies. I promote
interdisciplinary knowledge on immigration, combine theory and case studies, and follow
contextual, conceptual and interpretive approaches. My findings always try to contribute to
the European approach.
On Borders and Human Mobility, I have: a) conducted theoretical and empirical research
on circular migration and on externalization of migration policies, mainly in the Latin
American and Mediterranean areas; b) contributed to the debate on the ethics of migration
and offered an analytical framework for designing a global code of ethics, c) worked to a
political theory of borders, transnationalism, and global human mobility; d) recently been
incorporated in a network of 32 research institutes (from EU, Americas, Africa and
Australia) to build a research agenda of recent transnational Diaspora, funded by Horizon
2020.
On Diversity and Citizenship, I have: a) introduced the notion of “multiple diversity”, an
analytical framework in which two dynamics of diversity interact – multinational and
immigration-based diversity – and I have applied it to the case of Spain; b) promoted
research on multi-level governance of immigration; c) proposed and applied a framework
for monitoring xenophobic political discourse in mainstream political parties; furthermore,
I am d) contributing to the foundational intercultural/multicultural debate, and conducting
empirical research linking the concept, the policy and the implementation of the emerging
intercultural approach; b) working with other colleagues to promote an analytical
framework called “the local turn”, giving the growing academic recognition about the fact
that we are going from a state-centered to a local-centered approach in integration and
diversity policies.
Keeping academic excellence as a priority, my research always tries to work within the
research/policy nexus, so that the results of my findings can be applied to improve reality
and can contribute to social and political change. I am founder and director of the
Interdisciplinary Research Group on Immigration (GRITIM-UPF), established in 2009 and
recognized by the Generalitat (scored: 6.82 out of 7 in the social sciences domain). I
belong to the Board of Directors of the European Network IMISCOE, and I am director of
the Master Program on Immigration Management (6th ed, recognized by Aneca). Within
this setting, I promote quality research, training and knowledge transfer. From GRITIM-
UPF, I support the mobility of international researchers (this year we have two Marie
Curies for instance), as well as receiving visiting full professors.
