GOALS AND SPECIAL INTERESTS

I have always been interested in Hand Surgery after serving my internship/house officer year in medicine. I was exposed to Hand Surgery proper during my orthopaedic rotation as a medical officer in 1996. I went through my basic surgical training and took the Fellowship examination (Surgery in General) in 2000 at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. I successfully applied to the Department of Hand Surgery, Singapore General Hospital in 2001 for a 1-year training rotation.

To further my interest in Hand Surgery, I entered into Advanced Surgical Training programme in Hand Surgery since 2002. It was then that I continue to develop a keen interest and enthusiasm in the field of Wrist Surgery and Arthroscopy. As part of my sub-specialty training in wrist surgery, I have completed a 1-year HMDP fellowship programme in wrist surgery in 2006 to 2007 period. From March to November 2006, I was at the Centre for Hand and Upper Limb Surgery, Wrightington Hospital, Wigan, UK under the supervision of Prof John Stanley and from December 2006 to March 2007, I was at the Kaplan Institute in Barcelona, Spain with eminent wrist surgeons, Drs Marc Garcia-Elias and Alberto Lluch.

Since my return from HMDP, I was appointed Director of Wrist Service in the Department of Hand Surgery in SGH up to end April 2012 when I handed over. As the prime mover of the wrist sub-specialty, I take it as a challenge for me to bring the Hand Surgery Department to greater heights through application of current developments in wrist surgery and delivery of quality patient care.

I have also taken an interest in medical education as well as administration. I am currently both Adjunct Asst Professor to the 2 medical schools in Singapore, Duke-NUS and NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, actively involved in both

undergraduate teaching as well as in postgraduate teaching as a core faculty for the Orthopaedic Residency programme. I am also in the Residency Advisory Committee for Hand Surgery, an appointed body by the Ministry of Health to provide oversight to the post graduate training for specialists and also to provide guidance and input towards the update and maintenance of the Hand Surgery training syllabus in Singapore.

Being the current Head, Department of Hand Surgery at the Singapore General Hospital and the President of the Singapore Society for Hand Surgery, I have been given the opportunity to take on administrative roles and responsibilities. I am actively serving as a reservist appointment holder for the Army Medical Services for the past 9 years and my role has allowed me to make critical decisions from time to time to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the Army Medical Services. I am also sitting on and chairing various committees as part of my exposure to hospital and medical administration. I do hope to pursue postgraduate training in medical administration in time to come as part of my overall career development and progression.
