Role on project

Description of the major goals

1998-2001 Assessment of Muscle Function During Cyclical Lifting Through the Analysis of Surface

Electromyographic Data

Whitaker Foundation

Role: PI

To develop a novel approach to assess localized muscle fatigue during the performance of

a dynamic muscle contraction with potential application to the evaluation of subjects with

low back pain.

2000 Cycle-Ergometer Modifications for Exercise Physiology Testing

U.S. Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine

Role: PI

To develop a battery of tests relying on the use of a cycle-ergometer to assess fatigue

during performance of a cyclical motor task and evaluate the decrease in force production

associated with the fatigue process.

2000-2003 EMG-Based Methods for Testing Non-Keyboard Input Devices

National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health

Role: PI

To develop an EMG-based technique to monitor the level of activity of forearm muscles

during the use of a computer mouse with the aim of comparing computer mouse designs

and determine what design has better ergonomic characteristics.

2003-2005 Enhancing Elderly Balance & Gait Using Mechanical Noise

National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, National Institutes of Health

Role: Co-PI

13

To assess the effectiveness of sub-sensory mechanical stimulation of the soles of the feet to

increase afferent input and therefore improve the control of posture during quiet standing

in subjects who report frequency falls.

2003-2007 Data Mining to Identify Motor Fluctuations in Parkinson’s Disease

National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, National Institutes of Health

Role: PI

To develop data analysis techniques relying on wearable sensor recordings to estimate the

severity of symptoms and motor complications in patients with late stage Parkinson’s

disease with the long-term goal of facilitating the titration of medications.

Narrative Report

I started my career with a focus on the development of signal processing techniques working on a broad spectrum of applications ranging from the estimation of muscle fiber conduction velocity via the analysis of surface electromyographic recordings to the diagnosis of structural damage in bridges via modal analysis. Over the past 20 years, I developed a strong interest for designing and testing rehabilitation technologies. This is now my “research home”. The program that I lead at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital, where I serve as Director of the Motion Analysis Laboratory, has three major focus areas: 1) analyzing the biomechanics of movement via camera-based systems,

72

2) monitoring patients in the home and community settings via wearable technology, and 3) developing and testing robotic systems for the implementation of rehabilitation interventions. My team’s work in these areas has a common thread that is modeling and analyzing data to derive clinically-relevant information. On average, I oversee the work of about 15 individuals including research assistants, engineers, therapists and fellows.

I have been actively engaged in lecturing and volunteering in professional societies. Right after I received my doctoral degree, I started lecturing on biomedical engineering topics and overseeing laboratory activities of undergraduate and graduate students. I continue to be actively involved in mentoring residents in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, graduate and undergraduate students (mostly with an interest in biomedical engineering), and therapists motivated to pursue opportunities in clinical research. I spend about 15% of my time mentoring young researchers and lecturing. I have been very active in professional societies such as the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society (EMBS) and the International Society of Electrophysiology and Kinesiology (ISEK). I served as elected AdCom member of IEEE EMBS from 2006 to 2010 and as Vice President of IEEE EMBS for Publications from 2013 to 2016. I also served as President of ISEK from 2008 to 2010. I have organized several scientific meetings. I served as Program Chair for the First AMA-IEEE Medical Technology Conference on Individualized Healthcare and as Conference Chair of the 33rd Annual International Conference of the IEEE EMBS. I have been active in editorial roles. In 2004, I served as Founding Editor in Chief of the first open-access journal in rehabilitation (Journal of NeuroEngineering and Rehabilitation, BioMed Central) which is now ranked by Thomson Reuters among the top journals in the field of rehabilitation.

I have been fortunate to see my contribution toward the development of rehabilitation technologies acknowledged by many colleagues. I find very rewarding to see that the technologies developed and tested by my team are later used in clinical practice. I am committed to continue my research work toward developing and testing new technologies aimed to improve quality of care in patients undergoing rehabilitation.
