Title Traité des arbres et arbustes, nouvelle édition Creator Duhamel du Monceau, Henri Louis Subject Natural history Subject Flowers Subject Botany Description This seven-volume work, commonly known as the Nouveau Duhamel, is to a large extent

independent of the Traité des arbres et arbustes which was published, also in Paris, in 1768. Other botanists, illustrators and engravers were involved in the work, the only common element being the theme: general descriptions of the trees and shrubs cultivated outdoors in France at that time. Étienne Michel is accounted as the chief editor of the work, which was published in 83 parts between 1800 and 1819 and which contained further contributions from J.L.A. Loiseleur-Deslongchamps, C.F. Brisseau-Mirbel, J.L. Poiret, J.H. Jaume Saint-Hilaire and Veillard. The watercolours, kept nowadays in the National Library in Paris, were painted by Pierre-Joseph Redouté and Pancrace Bessa, the leading plant illustrators in the French capital. Twenty-nine engravers participated in the production of the copper plates. The work is dedicated to Joséphine, the first wife of Napoleon, and is known in three forms – one with black and one with coloured engraving à la poupée, and one large-format luxury edition with coloured engraving à la poupée. Nothing illustrates the wealth of the Austrian National Library better than the fact that for a long time it possessed two copies of the luxury edition – one in the Court Library, and the other in the Family Trust Library. The second copy was sold in the year 1949 and is now housed in Oak Spring Garden Library in the USA. The copy from the Family Trust Library has a remarkable provenance. It was a tactless gift from Napoleaon to Francis I, Emperor of Austria, the father of Napoleon’s second wife – tactless principally because the work is expressly dedicated to Napoleon’s first wife, from whom he had just separated. The scope of the illustrated trees and shrubs ranges from holly (Ilex aquifolium L.; 1: t.1), camellia (Camellia japonica L.; 2: t. 71) and redcurrant (Ribes rubrum L.; 3: t. 57), to black mulberry (Morus nigra L.; 4: t. 2e), oleander (Nerium oleander L.; 5: t.23), plum (Prunus domestica L.; 5: t.56) and citron (Citrus medica L.;7:t.22). Two trees of particular interest were introduced into Europe via the Jardin du Roi in Paris, already known as the Jardin des Plantes at the time of the publication of the Nouveau Duhamel: robinia (Robinia pseudoacacia L.; 2: t. 16) and pagoda tree (Sophora japonica L.; 3: t. 21). Whereas the second tree is widespread only in parks, one cannot imagine Europe today without robinia – a rapidly spreading tree that in many places dominates the landscape, as for example southern Hungary. In the work shown here, fairly precise details were given about the history of the introduction of several trees. In the case of robinia, we read that “at the beginning of the 17th century … Jean Robin, professor of botany in Paris, planted seeds of this tree that he had acquired from Canada (i.e., the middle west of present-day USA) in the Jardin des Plantes”; of the pagoda tree, which is native to China and Korea, we learn that “in 1747 Father D’Incarville sent seeds of this tree to the famous Bernard de Jussieu; they were sown in the garden of Louis XV in Trianon, and young plants were distributed to various people. In 1779 … the specimens of Monsieur de Noailles in Germain-en-Laie were the first to flower in France.”
