2017 - 2018 CSU LEARNING TECHNOLOGI ES PLAN 3

1. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The Learning Environments Committee (LEC) is the custodian of the Framework and the Plan.

The Plan addresses on-campus and off-campus education and CSU’s focus on practice-based education.

1.1 PURPOSE

The CSU learning technologies Plan embodies from 2016 to 2017 the principles espoused in the CSU Learning Technologies Framework (see

http://www.csu.edu.au/division/landt/resources/documents/CSUEducationalTechnologyFramework.pdf). The Plan will be revised annually and will cover a two year period.

Policy will have to be reviewed and appropriate resources allocated to ensure that the key tenets of the Framework are implemented through the Plan.

1.2 CONTEXT

The Plan aligns with the CSU Strategy. The plan further reflects the funding decisions of the Initiatives and Strategy Implementation Plan (ISIP). The organisati onal design of

CSU needs to support and respond to the key strategies contained in the Plan, for instance in the formulation of position descriptions and the way that work is organised.

Page 4: CSU Learning Tech Plan...30. Enhance our systems capability to better service pathway, multi-session and non-award students. 31. Enhance the online environment by leveraging a more

2017 - 2018 CSU LEARNING TECHNOLOGI ES PLAN 4

1.3 AIMS AND OBJECTIVES OF THE PLAN

The Plan guides the implementation of learning technologies for a two year period at CSU and ensures the development, provision and use of learning technologies

advances learning and teaching towards positioning CSU with a reputation for quality learning and teaching using online learn ing as the anchor in on-campus, off-campus

and workplace learning.

The learning technologies used at CSU and current developments can be viewed on the CSU Supported Learning Technologies Landscape.

Page 5: CSU Learning Tech Plan...30. Enhance our systems capability to better service pathway, multi-session and non-award students. 31. Enhance the online environment by leveraging a more

2017 - 2018 CSU LEARNING TECHNOLOGI ES PLAN 5

1.4 DEFINITION OF “LEARNING TECHNOLOGIES”

Learning technologies is defined in the Framework as the broad range of information, communication and related technologies that are integrated in well-researched

educational theory and practice for the direct purpose of effective design, development and facilitation of learning and teaching.

1.5 SECTIONS OF THE PLAN

The Plan deals with:

a) Introduction of New Learning Technologies

b) Increasing the Appropriate Use Of Learning Technologies

c) Related policy areas to align with, review or develop

d) The Required Systems Environment and Infrastructure

e) Professional Development And Training

f) Support For The Use of Learning Technologies

g) The Governance Structure Supporting Learning Technologies.

Each section uses the following colour coding to indicate priorities

- High priority - Red

- Medium priority = Orange

- Lower priority = White.

The priorities were created based on the expertise of representative staff of the University that served on the Review Working Group of the Plan, the Educational

Technology Reference Group (ERG) and Faculty feedback.

Enhance our systems capability to better service pathway, multi-session and non-award students. 31. Enhance the online environment by leveraging a more personalised, innovative portal to support improved student engagement, responsive interactions, improved

discovery and access to the right information to support students in their study. 32. Student labs Refresh 33. Teaching Space technology Refresh 34. Enhance learning and teaching data/ analytics infrastructure 35. Improved integration between the CRM and Interact 2

1.7 SUGGESTIONS TO BE IMPLEMENTED IN THE 2019 PLAN

1. It would be good to include details like – the Project Manager/Team; Project Timeline (esp. commencement and finish dates).

2. Make it a living document (maybe an editable progress column) and/or version control every 3 months via the Ed Tech Ref Group. Use in the Faculty CLTCs to report

progress

3. A rough timeline reconciled with the teaching session and avoiding critical times would also be helpful. 4. Ranking might be considered, but there are divided opinions about this as the current priority categories might suffice.

2. INTRODUCTION OF NEW LEARNING TECHNOLOGIES

2.1 LEARNING TECHNOLOGIES TO BE PROGRESSED SIGNIFICANTLY AND INTRODUCED IN 2017

Note that external educational technologies (these are online and mobile technologies including software, hardware and networks which allow user participation and intera ction and that are not integrated with

internal CSU systems, and are not centrally supported by DIT or DLT, and have not been centrally assessed by DIT and DLT) are not included in the table below.

APPENDIX A: GLOSSARY

BKSB - Basic Key Skills Builder.

Blended learning – Utilises both physical and virtual environments and may be defined as “a design approach whereby both face -to-face and online learning are made

better by the presence of each other” (Garrison and Vaughan, 2008). Blended learning and teaching can occur at four levels of granularity: activity-level blending, subject-

level blending, course-level blending and institutional-level blending (Graham, 2006). A blended learning design may also be enabling, incremental or transformative.

Enabling blends would address issues of access and equity to provide equitable opportunities in face-to-face, print-based, blended and fully online learning environments.

Enhancing blends focus on incremental changes to the existing teaching and learning environment. Transformative blends focus on a major redesign of the teaching and

learning environment (e.g., problem-based learning). Within CSU, blended learning would also include a further dimension of blending which would allow predominantly

print-based distance education subjects/courses to be combined with online teaching and learning. (The Flexible Learning Institute working definition.)

CRO - CSU Research Output is an open access digital archive, also called an institutional repository. CRO includes CSU scholarship and research output of various types,

including refereed journal articles, conference papers, books, chapters, and creative works.

External online technologies – Learning technologies that support online collaboration and networking and the development of online objects.

Flexible learning – Flexible learning provides opportunities to improve the student experience through flexibility in time, pace, place (physical, virtual, on-campus, off-

campus,), mode of study (print-based, face-to-face, blended, online, mobile), teaching approach (collaborative, independent), forms of assessment and staffing. It may

utilise a wide range of media, environments, learning spaces and technologies for learning and teaching

Interact2 – Interact2 is CSU’s online collaborative and learning and teaching system of which the hub is Blackboard Learn. It is used for learning and teaching as well as for

research and administrative collaboration. Also included in Interact2 are other OLE tools such as EASTS (electronic assignment submission), subject outline tool and SES

(Subject Experience Survey).

Learner and learning-centred learning – Learning that occurs with the learner and learning as its central focus.

Learning Sciences – a multidisciplinary field with the goal of better understanding the cognitive and social processes that lead to effective learning in order to improve

teaching and learning approaches (Sawyer, 2014). The field includes disciplines such as “cognitive science, educational psychology, computer science, anthropology,

sociology, information sciences, neurosciences, education, design studies, instructional design and other fields” (Sawyer, 2014, p. 1).

LMS – A Learning Management System is a computer-based platform for online learning and teaching.

Mobile devices – A set of portable technologies that provide wireless access to internet and cellular phone network based information and services

OERs – Open Education Resources.

2017 - 2018 CSU LEARNING TECHNOLOGI ES PLAN 28

OLE – The OLE is a collection of online learning and teaching services that includes Interact2 as hub, and an array of online learning and teaching tools The CSU Supported Learning Technologies Landscape depicts the OLE.

Online Learning – Learning that occurs while connected to the Internet.
