T he cruise ship AIDAmar is an urban cosmos in i tsel f , providing pleasures that make for the perfect vacat ion. The ship is bui l t with the goal of achieving

the highest possible qual i ty in contemporary design, opt imised for the needs of both passengers and crew.

The ship’s l ight ing concept supports this approach and adapts the atmosphere, funct ion and design cr i ter ia to the diversity of the ship’s publ ic areas and themes. The AIDAmar is 253 metres long and 32 metres wide. Beaut i fu l ly detai led, the ship includes var ious amenit ies spread out in 13 decks, including 7 restaurants, 12 bars, sundecks, shops, wel lness/spa area, a theatr ium, a casino, as wel l as f i tness and kids clubs.

Almost al l luminaires are dimmable and distr ibuted over 600 dimming groups to create di fferent day and night moods throughout the ship. The main attract ion of the changing moods are the shining, warm colors of the inter ior surfaces at night, caused by the correlated color temperature shi f t of the low voltage halogen bulbs from 3000 K to about 2400 K. In addit ion to providing a comfortable and invit ing atmosphere, the l ight ing design ensures maintainabi l i ty, sustainabi l i ty, energy savings and safety.

The theatre, publ ic square and surrounding bars of the theatr ium blend into an impressive room and l ight experience that extend over three decks. The dayl ight concept in the centre of the entertainment area supports the general l ight ing of the ship and complements the qual i ty of the mater ia ls used and their ref lect ive nature. At night, the theatr ium turns into a golden shining musical hal l .

Rossini , the most upscale restaurant in the ship, exhibits r ich and glossy wooden surfaces and comes equipped with adjustable, dimmed halogen-downl ights to create a warm and luxur ious ambience. The downl ights have a minimised frame and deep posit ioned ‘cool beam’ lamps.

The l ight ing concept of the wel lness/spa area focuses on soft l ight gradients and color rendering on the vert ical mosaic surfaces. The colour-changing f iber opt ics i l luminat ion of the intr icately designed steam sauna ( left ) – with i ts capt ivat ing starry sky – alters the room’s l ight moods.
