Get info that will empower you to add water to your home environment. October 16: “Owl Meet and Greet” e Carolina Raptor Center will join us to show and tell about owls - primarily Barn and Screech owls - that live in and around Mecklenburg County. Meet these magnificent predators and learn how valuable they are to the health of our community. Owl workshop details to follow. November 20: “Charlotte’s Trees and Canker Worms” Local tree expert Patrick George, from Heartwood Trees Inc., will teach you the best way to protect your trees from the upcoming Canker Worm invasion. He’ll also share interesting facts about Charlotte’s trees and offer tips for care. December 18: “Native Plant Presentation and Sale” Learn why we should care about native plants, how are they different, and why they matter to wildlife. See how natives can solve problems and be used to enhance your own yard habitat. CROWN will have native plants for purchase. January 17: “Local Field Trip - Ribbon Walk” Ribbon Walk is one of Charlotte’s hidden jewels. Join us to experience the wonders of a winter woodland with our team of Master Naturalists and Habitat Stewards. See how nature still provides for our community’s wildlife, even in winter. February 19: “Got Amphibians?” Frogs, toads, and salamanders - all are the sign of a healthy ecosystem. Stephen Hutchinson, from Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation, will fill us in on the status of our region’s amphibian population and what you may see in your own backyard. March 19: “Box Turtles - A Carolina Original” Come and learn about the box turtle, North Carolina’s state reptile. Laura Domingo, from Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation, will share some incredible facts this native creature. April 16: “Monarch Butterflies!” Monarch butterflies are considered one of the most interesting butterflies in North America. Learn why in a program brought to you by CROWN’s leadership team members Leigh Anne Carter and Nancy DeVries. Hear what you can do in your yard to help their numbers. May 21: “Charlotte Naturally” Is Charlotte a “Wildlife Friendly Community”? See how certification can reshape thinking about one of the Southeast’s largest metropolitan regions. CROWN’s Dawn Anderson will share our Chapter’s most ambitious challenge and what it means for Charlotte.
