National Quilter's Day was a big success. We had 19 members attend. Each made a choice to sew on the sport-theme Attic-window kit or other kits that were provided. Several kits went home to be finished up, and two quilt tops were completed. During lunch at our March 6th Warm Wrappings meeting, we used the TV available for our use to view our Quilt Show DVD. At the April meeting we plan to have an instructional tape to view, courtesy of Cheryl Hall. We are in need of quilters to quilt the completed tops. There will be several projects that include the top, back, batting & binding at each meeting starting in April. Nothing fancy is needed. Use simple straight line stitching, or perhaps those special stitches you never use on your home sewing machines. Another good way is to tie the quilt. Any assistance will help us make our target of 100 or more quilts this year. If you don't want to do the binding, other members like to do that task. Return the quilted top to Lila or Paddy and we will pass it on to the "Binders". Meetings are held at the Orangeburg Ave. Baptist Church, between McHenry and Sunrise. Meeting

time: 10-2, bring a lunch and beverage for our noon time break. Next meetings will be on April 3, May 1, June 5, July 3, mark your calendar! Happy Stitching! Paddy Shopher and Lila Bradshaw

Program Meeting Minutes March 12, 2013

Meeting was called to order at 7:00 by Sue Schlange.

Outgoing officers and chairs were introduced by

Yvonne Jones, and she presented each with a thank

you gift, a cell phone holder. She then turned over the

gavel to Gail Wax, who introduced the new officers

and chairs.

Gail said one of her duties was to schedule Short

Subject for the business meetings so she started a

sign-up sheet asking for volunteers.

Linda Cover gave us an update for the Ricky Tims

Super Seminar, February 6-8, 2014. She told us that

the DoubleTree had set aside some of their rooms for

the use of the attendees, and that Ricky had made

arrangements for pre-paid parking in the lot.

Linda also told us that Bart Cubbage would be at her

home Wednesday and Thursday to service sewing

machines.

Margaret Wolfe gave us an update on the Healdsburg

retreat. She said there were enough participants to

meet the minimum, but that there were still eight

places available. She also told us that there were no

buses available for the Shop Hop this year, but that

she had reserved the last available bus for PIQF. She

asked if the Guild members would be interested in

having a Shop Hop bus for 2014, and there appeared

to be enough interest for her to go forward on this.

Members were reminded that membership renewal is

now due, that applications for the Terry Kendrick

Memorial Scholarship could be completed, and that if

they wished to be in the running for one of the $75

scholarships, they should write their name on a slip of

paper to go in the basket being passed around.

Delores Miller suggested that we consider six $100

scholarships for the Ricky Tims Super Seminar in

place of the usual Terry Kendrick Scholarship. This

was tabled until the Business meeting.

Star Strahle reminded us that the theme for March's

Fat Quarter Lotto is polka dots, and that the FQ's

should be brought to the next meeting.

Gail then told us that she works a 10-hour, 5-day a

week job, and often takes work home as well. In view

of this, she encouraged us not to call her Monday

through Friday evening if we expected a coherent

conversation. E-mails would be okay, as she can

answer them at a time better for her. She also said

she wants to help all members grow, both as

individuals and as a team. She realizes that we need

more participants and fewer onlookers if this is to

happen, and will encourage us to participate. She

also told us that she will be making her own quilt, and

that she is looking for items to go on it. The theme will

be garden, so she is looking for leaves, flowers, bugs,

etc. to go on it. She is completely expecting to receive

things that didn't work for us.

Judy Martin, Vice-President, then introduced Patricia

Beavers, who is a lecturer, teacher and judge. We

were then thoroughly entertained by Patricia. Patricia

included events of her life that had set her down the

road of quilting, and how she tried several quilt guilds

before she found one that fit. The one that fit

welcomed her warmly, and she encouraged us to do

the same thing for our new members. She said she

labels all of her quilts, not only saying why she made

it, but also to whom it should be given when she

goes. When she served as President of her guild,

they gave her blocks made by the members, and the

person presenting the blocks very quietly told her that

the "less perfect" blocks could go on the back.

Patricia was disturbed by that as she felt that

members would be hurt if their blocks were on the

back, and made two quilts, both lovely. One was

exclusively the "less perfect" blocks. She told us that

she took lots of workshops, and that each one helped

her to grow, and that they would help us, too. Last,

she told us "Quilting is cheaper than therapy!"

Lila then presented March's Block of the Month, and

told us that our Color Challenge Quilts had been

accepted for PIQF 2014, as 2013 was already filled.

She then presented Yvonne with her President's quilt.

Michele Stoumbaugh then had the Secret Pal reveal,

and encouraged us to participate in this fun activity.

Quilts of Honor Special Presentation

Our program meeting on July 9th will be a presenta-

tion of Quilts of Honor to veterans who are related or

friends of our own members. If you would like to

honor a veteran on that night, please call Marilee

Heaston so their name can be added to our list. If

you would like to make the quilt for your veteran, that

would be great, just let us know. Gail Belmont of

Quilts of Honor will be our guest speaker that

evening, and she will be making the presentations.

On another note, she is soliciting quilts for a quilt

show at the National Museum of the Marine Corps in

Washington, D.C., on October, 2013. The quilts are

to be done in red, white and blue or the Marine colors

of red, black and gold. The size limitations are as fol-

lows: 50"x60", 55"x65", 57"x67" or 60"x70".

Contact Marilee for the rest of the parameters and

deadline dates.

If you are unable to make a quilt for Quilts of Honor,

either for the Museum show, or our own presentation,

or to add to the Q of H collection, but would like to

make a monetary donation to help Gail replace her

computer machine, contact Marilee for Gail's contact

information or go to www.quiltsofhonor.org.

Healdsburg Retreat, September, 2013

A 5 day/4 night retreat is being planned for Sept 15 -

Sept 19 at Bishop's Ranch near Healdsburg. Many of

you have traveled to several quilt shows and have a

good sized stash. Now we are going to give you a

chance to use some of those wonderful pieces of

material or complete some UFO's.

If you are interested, please let me know as soon as

possible. The cost will be $460, double occupancy.

Meals, lodging and snacks are included. You may

sew on anything you want and must bring all of your

sewing supplies (tables, electrical cords and power

strips will be supplied). This center is located in a

beautiful rural area.

A $100 non-refundable deposit was due by April 1,

2013. Transportation is not provided, but you might

want to car pool. The original 20 slots are full but

there may be additional slots available.

Business Meeting Minutes March 26, 2013

The March 26th business meeting was called to order at 7:04 PM by President Gail Wax. New members and guests were introduced. Sign-up sheets for the April 8th workshop to be taught by Annette Kennedy, and for the Quilts of Honor were circulated. President Gail asked for volunteers to present short subjects at the business meetings. If you are interested, please contact her. The minutes were approved as published.

The treasurer presented the March report. The 2013-14 budget was presented. It was moved and seconded that the budget be approved as presented. The motion carried.

Old business:

Scholarships: Members were given their final opportunity to sign ups for the four $75.00 scholarships. Revisions to the scholarship program were suggested. One recommendation is to divide the Kendrick scholarship among a number of members for this year to help pay for the Ricky Tims seminar. Another was to add additional scholarships to the budget this year for this purpose. President Gail Wax reported that a scholarship committee meeting would be convened to review the scholarship program. After reviewing the suggested revisions to the scholarship criteria and others, they will make recommendations to the membership. She asked that anyone interested in serving on this committee contact her.

New business and Announcements:

The San Jose Quilt Museum of Quilts and Textiles is featuring Folk Indian Textiles. In May they will feature Baby Carriers from China, followed by New York Beauty quilts from July to October.

West Coast Mennonite Sale and Auction will be held in Fresno, on April 3-6, including a quilt and afghan sale on Sat.

May 18: Quilting in the Pines Quilt show in Pine Mountain

A thank you note was received from Generation to Generation Heirlooms and from Sylvia Hill complimenting the guild on the lovely quilt show. Sylvia loved the Doors of Modesto challenge.

The $75 scholarship winners were drawn. The winners are: Karen Turner, Paddy Shopher, Angie Gohn, and Teri Harman. Each will receive a $75.00 scholarship.

Reports:

Vice-presidents: Kathy Sandner presented information on the April workshop and program to be presented by Annette Kennedy. She stated that the V-Ps are finalizing the schedule for this year's programs. She asked for members’ suggestions for presenters. Marilee Heaston told about members about the Quilts of Honor program to be given in July. See the article on this in this newsletter.

Membership: Mary Giventer reported that 48 members were in attendance. She stated that applications for the Teri Kendrick scholarship are available from her and on the website. Membership dues should be paid this month.

Ricky Tims Seminar 2014 The hall is booked and the details are being finalized

for the Ricky Tims Super Seminar It will be at the

Modesto Centre Plaza, February 6-8, 2014 The

contract is signed and we are proceeding with the

next step, which is getting the information out to

everyone within a 300 mile radius that Ricky is

coming to Modesto.

We are working with the Modesto Convention and

Visitors Bureau to see what discounts may be

available for hotels, restaurants, etc. The good news

is that parking will be free in the lot adjacent to the

Centre Plaza for early registrants. The DoubleTree/

Hilton Hotel has set aside a group of rooms at a

special rate for the Seminar also.

The registration forms for the Seminars to be held in

2014 are going to be different than in the past, and

are not yet posted on Ricky’s website. Instead of

groups registering together to receive a discounted

rate as in the past, registrations will now be done

individually and online, and those registering early will

receive a discounted fee. Details to be available

soon.

I know you have picked up on my enthusiasm for this

event, but if you are still unfamiliar with who Ricky is

and what all this fuss is about, I invite you to visit

Ricky’s website, www.rickytims.com, and click on

Seminars and watch his 4 minute video to see for

yourself. I know you won’t be disappointed.

Editor ’s Note: Block of the Month

This is the best picture I got of the last Block of the Month

presented by Lila and Paddy during the Program meeting on

March 12th. Yes, it’s very fuzzy, its not your eyesight.

If anyone has a better picture, I would like to post it on the

website. Please send if to me at [email protected]

Thanks, Angie
