Public invited to Grand Opening of New Medical CenterThis is an exciting time for Crossing Rivers Health and the region. After nearly five years of careful consideration and planning, extensive research, community input and visioning session, the construction of the new Crossing Rivers Health Medical Center is nearly complete. There has been a tremendous amount of excitement and interest in the construction of our new Medical Center on local, state and national levels.

The excitement and momentum have been building up to the moment we have all been waiting for: the opening of this spectacular new Medical Center. The Grand Opening celebration being held on Saturday, June 6, offers you an opportunity to experience this historical milestone in Crossing Rivers Health’s history and see for yourself what makes the new Medical Center unique. We’re opening the doors in advance of officially opening to patients, so that you have the opportunity to see patient care and other areas of the Medical Center before they become a sterile and secure environment, accessible only by our staff, our physicians and our patients.

Construction of the $50 million Medical Center is a major accomplishment in our efforts to meet the healthcare needs of the communities in this region. The 137,000 square foot facility is equipped with all the high-tech, cutting-edge equipment you’d imagine. More importantly, the new Crossing Rivers Health Medical Center was specifically designed to create a healing environment that promotes and supports the caregivers, as they deliver advanced medical care in a comforting setting. The Medi-cal Center’s architectural design elements complement the area’s natural beauty and create a peaceful healing environment.

Funding for the new Medical Center includes a $32.4 million Community Facility Direct Loan from the USDA. The remaining funding comes through donor contributions, local bank placement bonds and Crossing Rivers Health cash reserves.

Crossing Rivers Health will be moving all services that are currently operating at 705 East Taylor Street to the new 105 acre campus of Crossing Rivers Health Medical Center on US Hwy 18, across from the Prairie du Chien Municipal Airport. The Medical Center will be the new home to Emergency/Urgent Care, Rehabilitation Therapies, Diagnostic Imaging and a new Home Medical Equipment Retail Store and Gift Shoppe. The facility also includes a Center for Specialty Care which features a growing list of specialists, available right here, close to home.

The Grand Opening will be a proud day for Crossing Rivers Health as we celebrate this tremendous achievement. We also celebrate Board, Foundation, Medical Staff, Leadership, volun-teers and community members that have supported our journey. We thank our development and business partners and the hundreds of workers who have constructed this beautiful facility.

Crossing Rivers Health has a dedicated and compassionate staff that focuses on providing an exceptional patient and family experience and the best clinical outcomes for every patient, every time. Our new home will foster continued growth and success at Crossing Rivers Health.

Hope to see you at our Grand Opening on Saturday, June 6th.

Bill Sexton, Chief Executive Officer

Parking for the Grand Opening will be limited. Please enter the Medical Center at the Walmart stop lights and follow instructions of traffic directors. All overflow parking will be directed to Miniature Precision Component (MPC), where a shuttle will drop off and pick up at the new Medical Center.

Construction of the new Medical Center is nearly complete. Before we open our doors for patient care in June, we are

Emergency Department EnhancementsOne of the significant enhancements the new Crossing Rivers Health Medical Center provides is the state-of-the-art Emergency Department. From a dedicated Emergency entrance and registration desk, to the centralized nursing and provider station and added treatment rooms, the new Emergency Department will support our caregivers in providing the level of emergency care our patients deserve. Combined, the new Emergency and Urgent Care areas make this space 75% larger than the former hospital facility.

ER Features and Amenities• Two identical trauma/procedure rooms provide the ability to treat serious and chronic conditions, from cardiac emergencies to life-threatening injuries• Six spacious and private patient rooms feature in-room TVs and climate control. Larger rooms allow more space for family and also better accommodate portable x-ray and other necessary equipment• Bedside registration and electronic medical records reduce waiting and more efficient discharge process• Central nursing/physician station allows easier monitoring and access to all rooms• Dedicated Medflight helipad with heated walkway makes for easier and safer helicopter access and eliminates the need for police assistance in closing streets and moving vehicles from the leased parking lot when Medflight transfers are required• An at-grade, enclosed ambulance garage that can accommodate up-to four ambulances, bimproving medical transport vehicle access • Six Urgent Care rooms are separate, yet adjacent to the Emergency Department so they may be used for ER patient overflow, if necessary• Consultation and family room allows for privacy and counseling

There are 375,000 man hours logged to build the new Medical Center.

This is equivalent to one person working 40 hours

a week for 180 years!

Private Inpatient RoomsThe new Crossing Rivers Health Medical Center now provides private single-patient rooms, which are an upgrade from the semi-private inpatient rooms in the former hospital facility. Among the benefits of single-patient rooms are patient safety, infection control and privacy. The comfortable rooms provide expansive views of the beautiful bluffs that make our area unique, and unlimited natural light, important in the healing process.

Inpatient Room Features and Amenities• 18 private, single patient rooms, each with a bathroom and shower • In-room family space with a sofa bed, allowing family members to comfortably

stay with their loved ones• A dedicated caregiver zone within the patient room allows our clinical staff

easy access to patient supplies and medical records on an in-room computer, and allows the caregiver to spend more time at the patient’s bedside

• Three Special Care rooms allow for care of critical patients• Two bariatric rooms with built-in ceiling lifts for easy transfer and movement

of patients• Hospice room with an adjoined comfortable family suite• Modern call system, allowing patients direct communication with

their caregiver right from their bedside • 42" HD TVs allow patients viewing of patient education videos

and television programs• Upper level patient rooms provide full use of the large windows

which allow for views of nature and abundant natural light• Nurse servers with hallway access enable staff to stock patient

linens and supplies without entering the room and disturbing the patient

There are 101,500 bricks used to construct this facility - this amount could build 20

average-sized family homes.

New Medical Center Patient-driven, Inside and OutIn a region where the geography has influenced history and continues to influence life, it is only natural that it should also have influence in the design of the 137,000-square-foot Crossing Rivers Health Medical Center.

Rising on the edge of town between the river and the bluffs, the new 25-bed critical access hospital takes advantage of the natural elements to give its outside character – natural stone to blend with the surrounding bluff line to the east, flowing lines to emulate the Mississippi River to the west, and a bridge-like canopy to give homage to the connection between Iowa and Wisconsin.

As much as the land provides the inspiration for its look, the real influence for the building design comes from the people who will be using the facility. Safe, easy-to-navigate, connections to nature, control of their individual care environ-ment – these were the priorities identified by members of the community, staff, and even students at St. Gabriel’s School. The overarching theme across all groups was to improve the overall patient experience and help the experience match the quality of care delivered in the facility.

Patients and families can feel the difference from the moment they approach the Crossing Rivers Health campus. The separate entrances for the Medical Center and the emergency department are better defined. Once inside, directions to patient rooms, surgery, and outpatient services are more intuitive. With hallways for staff and the movement of materials separated from public hallways, the environment takes on a more calm and healing atmosphere.

Warmth and comfort is at the heart of the care environment. All inpatient rooms are private and give patients some control over their environment and amenities in the rooms. Situated on the second floor of the Medical Center, the rooms allow patients to connect to nature, with views to either the bluffs or the river valley, depending on which side of the Medical Center the room is located. A fireplace and more comfortable seating make the dining area and public spaces more inviting and pleasant.

Best practices and care processes drove many design decisions. Better room placement, acoustical materials to diminish noise, quiet and efficient air handling units, and the elimination of overhead paging all create a quieter care environment.

No longer limited by the geography of its central space inside the city, the new Crossing Rivers Health Medical Center brings a design and natural healing environment that complements the care and service the staff provides.

Medical Imaging

offers more patient comfort and several features and advancements that are not currently available on the mobile MRI scanner that previously served our patients. The new scanner is much quieter than other conventional MRI units allowing for a better patient experience and improved comfort. This scanner also features a wider opening to help alleviate claustrophobic fears that some patients encounter. With the exception of head MRIs, most types of scans can be done feet-first into the scanner. This allows for a patient’s head to remain outside of the unit. The sophis-tication of the MRI will also allow for decreased use of contrast agents injected into a vein. Contrast is used to highlight vascular anatomy; however the sensitivity of the MRI will show vascular structures the same as if a contrast material were used.

Another advancement at the newMedical Center is the installation of a new CT scanner Toshiba Prime 80. This CT scanner is faster in both the acquisition of a CT scan, as well as the processing of the images. Radiation dosage is estimated to be reduced by approximately 40% over previous

scanner. We continually strive to reduce the amount of radiation exposure a patient receives, and the new CT is a big step toward that goal. This particular scanner’s capabilities will allow Crossing Rivers Health to offer an array of expanded CT exams for patients and physicians, not previously available.

There are 1,013 pieces of window

glass in the Medical Center.

Advanced diagnostic imaging technology is installed in the Medical Imaging Department at the new Crossing Rivers Health Medical Center. The value of the equipment may total several millions of dollars, but in terms of benefits to the patients - it’s priceless. Imaging is the key to diagnosis and treatment for most patients, whether they suffer from heart disease, trauma, strokes or hundreds of other conditions.

In addition to equipping the new Crossing Rivers Health Medical Cen-ter with state-of-the-art technology, imaging equipment will be closer to the patient care areas.

The capability will exist to take X-rays in the trauma rooms of the emergen-cy department, which is uncommon in most hospitals.
