The First Day of School by Richard A. Lawson
And what are the important questions anywayOn this first day of school, after a night of no sleepWondering, even fearing how this day will go - and all the rest,Hoping it unfolds neatly as lesson plans promise… probably not…And in that thought works a hint of unreadiness and a quiet panicThat hovers though the black coffee.Yet later, when we gather in first morning expectancyWe do manage to breathe – though not deeply. My years are useless. I am as new here when the bell ringsAs all of those now looking at me.

The First Day of School by Richard A. Lawson
But what is this day and all the rest about? Not of course rules and study habitsOr even a bag full of knowledge Somehow packed in all those booksTidy on each desk.
Rather, an urge to know that pushes us into wonderingAbout clouds becoming raindrops from another side of the worldOr why the flower outside my window blooms at this precise moment…Where the songs in my heart come from - and where are they going.

The First Day of School by Richard A. Lawson All those questions – not in my curriculum guidebut that I now see in a new girl who can’t stay in her seatAnd dances an interruption around the roomNegotiates attention in mid sentenceAnd at the end of my witsTells me a story during lunchThat is dazzling and profoundAnd in one brief momentI see her soul in love with imaginationThat must move and wave and try to fly…

The First Day of School by Richard A. Lawson And this is what I must relearn on this first dayThat in our remembered self is an urge to create.I can look for it or notBut my choice had better be madeWith love and reverenceFor what we all want to express – our unique genius, no matter what…
Because that is who we are and after allThe only question worth considering anyway

The First Day of School by Richard A. Lawson No wonder the night is full of sleeplessness. That is the question of life.Nothing else comes close.
I remember nowWhy I am here and frightenedAnd so in awe of this momentAnd these children.

Children learn by being engaged. They must do, observe and listen in order to maintain focus & attention to learning. When minds, bodies and senses are engaged in learning the brain creates multiple networks and pathways to store, recall and build upon learning. The time honored adage of ‘learning by doing’ still applies to all types of learning.
Learning happens best in a safe and loving environment. A classroom where there is love and laughter is a place where children are enjoying learning. Comfort and trust improve brain processing.
Learning is built on prior knowledge. A child best develops learning when the teacher regularly provides formative assessments to adjust instruction to a child’s learning. Assessment does inform instruction.
Learners construct meaning. When a child reflects on new learning the teacher can then understand how a child constructed new learning. Reflection exposes the child’s true learning.
