Year 6-7 Transition Mock High School Days

Monday 2 December & Wednesday 4 December

Concord Orientation Tuesday 3 December

An initiative of our transition team that started a few years - Mock High School Days will once again this year see our Year 6 students following set timetables of different classes and subjects, in different rooms and with a variety of teachers. Lessons will include: Art, PE, Environmental Sci-ence, Drama, Geography, Personal Develop-ment, Music, Health, English and Mathematics. In the past, our Year 6 students have been truly engaged in the process and the lessons and we’re sure this year will be the same. Thank you to Mrs Kogias—who is coordinating the program, our year 6 teachers, and the other teachers who have volunteered to teach lessons over the 2 days.

The next stage of the election process for our 2020 Student Leaders is now underway. Stage 3 stu-dents have held a preliminary vote of all the nomi-nated year 5 students. From that vote, we have a short list of 10 boys and 10 girls who are now standing for election for the twelve leadership posi-tions. Over the next two weeks these students will display an A3 size campaign poster, wear an identi-ty badge and make a speech to the students of Year 2 to Year 6. This year the students will be vot-ing electronically after the speeches on Friday 29 November for our 12 student leaders for 2020.

The candidates are:

Class Structure 2020

We are currently planning for 88 or more kindergarten children and approximately 835 students in total. We have been notified of 27 children leaving our school, apart of course, from the 101 Year 6 students. At this stage we are not aware of any new students moving into our enrolment area and beginning in Years 1-6. This means if classes were formed today, we would have 32 (down from 35) classes. Our dilemma, as in past years, is that we do not know how many more new kindergarten or students from Years 1-6 might enrol at the beginning of, or during Term 1 next year. There may also be more stu-dents we haven’t been told about who will move. Therefore, like many schools across Sydney, we will again begin the year with children remaining in their 2019 class groups and wherever possible, with their 2019 teacher. We will maintain that situation until the enrolment picture is clear. Teachers have begun the process of profiling students for 2020 class groups.

Term 4 invoice – Now Overdue

For those families who have not paid for all activities including those prior to Term 4 and any unpaid Term 4 activities (eg FLIP Gym, PSSA Sport) you will have received a REMINDER NOTICE earlier this week. PAYMENTS ARE NOW OVERDUE. For those families with outstanding payments I will begin making con-tact to ensure we receive the balances owed - as we must finalise our yearly budget next week.

Payment can be made—in cash, cheque, EFTPOS and online through the POP link on our website

http://www.newington-p.schools.nsw.edu.au

Bush fires

As indicated in an eNews, students remained inside at recess and lunch last Tuesday and today due to the smoke haze and a poor Air Quality Forecast Alert issued by the Department of Planning, Industry and Environ-ment (DPIE). Although we were affected by this smoke haze, it was a timely reminder of the communities that have been harshly impacted by the bush fires and the incredible efforts of the firefighters. Our Year 4 classes, as part of their geography unit, are collecting cans, plastic bottles and tetra paks. All money raised from the collection will be donated to schools that have been damaged in the fires.

Anti–bullying Student Summit

Year 5 students were given an opportunity to be part of an Anti-Bullying Student Summit starting 2019, with pro-ject implementation into 2020, working with Learning and Wellbeing, Department of Education. That larger team will include Ryan S, Kiana G, Bianca H-C, Oliver G, Devvin D, Emily L, Dahlia C, Sophie Z, Nickolas R, Ava W, Ian K, Stephy L and Melissa P, who all de-serve a congratulations also on their heartfelt interest in the project and quality EOIs. We wish Anna, Evan, Jackson and Emily, along with their accompanying teacher Mr Ben Fifield , all the best for the 3 day Summit to be held at the Novotel and Department of Education in Parramatta. We can’t wait to hear how it all goes!

High School Transition

Week 8, Term 4 will be a big week for our Year 6 students as they embark on a ‘high school journey’! This will be in the form of Mock High School at NPS Monday 2 December & Wednesday 4 December, in combination with High School Orientation Day (for public schools) Tuesday 3 December. They will be experiencing what it is like to follow a timetable, have several teachers throughout the day and keep themselves organised. Miss Kogi-as has been busy coordinating the timetable with a range of volunteering teachers, and we expect it will be a very successful week for the students to get a taste of what is to come!

Maths Olympiad & Maths Games

All four teams have been highly successful this year in achieving personal and team goals for Maths Games and Maths Olympiad. Announcements will be made during tomorrow’s 3-6 morning assembly on the teams’ achievements among 30 000 students across more than 1200 schools in Australia and New Zealand. A huge thank you goes to Mrs Oliveira, Ms Stanton, Miss Kogias and Mr Fifield for their outstanding tutelage, support and enthusiasm for the program and excellent results—a stellar job by all four!

SPOT-

LIGHT ON LITERACY AND NUMERACY

Dear Mr Weeks, Do you reuse, reduce and recycle rubbish at home or in your office? It’s not hard! There are so many easy ways to do it! It’s good to do this because we all want to reduce landfill. I think we should have a ‘nude food challenge’ like other schools in Australia that I’ve seen on the inter-net. They way it work is we have to bring our recess and lunch in containers instead of plastic. At the end of the day, we look inside the blue bins and see how much rubbish there is. We need to respect the environment by not cutting down trees, not wasting paper, using our recycling bin and reducing landfill. If we reuse cardboard boxes, paper and other re-sources we would save money and trees. So, the next time you go to the shops, try to buy less plastic-wrapped items to save the en-vironment! Seven Steps

to Writing Success

PERSUASIVE FOCUS

Seven Steps to Writing has swept through all class-rooms from Years 2-6 at Newington Public School this year. Seven Steps to Writing is a fun and engaging tool box of writing skills and building blocks to equip our stu-dents with the confidence and creativity to develop writ-ing masterpieces.

Each writing step is isolated and taught to en-able students to build a solid foundation to write narratives, informative and persuasive texts. Did you know that you only have seven seconds to grab your reader’s interest when you create a piece of writing?

Money or Power You’re in Hawaii, lying down on a deck chair. You’re chilling on the beach, an umbrella shading you from the tropical sun, while you sip on your cold glass of lemonade, with the tiny umbrella resting on the side of the cup. It’s not even a public holiday! Everyone’s working today, but you’re not. There’s no traffic, no alarm clocks, or annoying co-workers. Just paradise, and freedom.

With money, you’re set up for life. No endless hours of working or leeching off your parents. After all, you’re rich. You don’t need to worry about paying for electricity bills, food, or rent; you have so much leftover money to spend, eve-rything is instantly paid, like a press of a button! Your whining child can easily get the expensive toy they want and eating out isn’t a worry for you. There’s no worries about going broke!

Secondly, you can save money; not power. Ok, so maybe you do need to get a bit more money to sustain your lifestyle. Saving some money in a bank to hold you back from lavishly spending like you always do is as easy as pie! But what about saving power? Sorry, but if you get fired, you get fired. It’s harder to find another job, so your life goes downhill pretty fast if you lose your job. Money can be managed easier!

Lastly, money gives you freedom and the ability to be carefree with no limita-tions. Working is hard and tiring. Do you really want to continuously work all the time? Being rich is a blessing. You have Bart, your butler, bringing to you whatever you want, whenever you want. You have the freedom to go wherever you want too. If you want to go to Hawaii, it only takes a few clicks, some plan-ning and packing, and then you’re good to go!

You shake your head, snapping back to reality in your boring and bland office.

You’re working, again. But finally, after 3 years, your company is successful. So,

from being an office-worker to being rich, you’re daydream is finally becoming

true. Time to live peacefully, relaxing and having freedom!

YEAR 5 DRAMA INCURSION

Drama Incursion We started at our home Pluto, heading off on an excursion to planet Earth. We travelled all around the world to see how planet Earth was changing. It was devastating! We arrived on Earth at the Great Barrier Reef in Australia where we were surrounded in plastic pollution. The poor sea creatures that lived there were suffering, the colourful fish had coral to camouflage due to coral reefs being bleached white. Another problem were oil spills, which stick to the scales of fish and have to be scrubbed off by marine biologists. We left the Great Barrier Reef to find the Sumatra Jungle in Indonesia, which was being demolished by man-kind. The Orangutans and Sumatra Tigers are becoming endangered and have been estimated to be extinct in 3-5 years. Humans have been destroying their habitats and have caused deforestation. Palm oil is the home of many animals from all around the world. Due to humans extracting palm oil lots of animals are dying. Next on our list was Antarctica, in the South Pole where we witnessed the ice caps melting and ‘bad guys’ (poachers) over fishing. This was causing problems to the sea life that lived there. If people over fish there won’t be any food for the penguins which will lead to a butterfly effect where Polar bears will end up dead from starvation. Penguins and Polar bears are mammals that cannot breathe underwater for too long when they hunt for fish. They heavily rely on small icebergs to lean on when they are out of breath. We finally landed on our last trip in Paraguay, South America. We were flabbergasted to see it was covered in plastic and rubbish everywhere. Even though they were surrounded by plastic pollution and litter, they thought of a positive solution to the waste and created musical instruments to use at their local schools as a reusable

solution to the problem. After experiencing what we have explored around the world, we discussed solutions to these problems, like making sure that we do not dump oil into the ocean, stop overfishing, try not to use products that include Palm Oil, Stop deforestation, stop the use of plastic and stop littering. Our favourite part of the adventure was seeing what we have done to this world and how we can help. A lesson we took away is every little positive contribu-tion we do for our environment adds a little less to our Carbon footprint. By: Bianca & Jessica
