CRITERIAVII INNOVATIONS AND BEST PRACTICES

7.1Environment Consciousness

7.1.1 Does the Institute conducts a Green Audit of its campus and facilities?

There is no formal system of Green Audit introduced in the college. The college established in

the midst of green environment situated in a rural and pollution free village, which gives a very

good academic atmosphere to the students. But the college has concern in developing greenery

around the college and to save environment.

7.1.2 What are the initiatives taken by the college to make the campus eco-friendly?

The college has taken initiative to make the campus eco friendly. It has taken steps like:-

Plantation - Vanamahotsava is celebrated by the college every year. It has been the practice

of the college to plant various kinds of saplings in the college campus comprising of trees

giving sufficient shades, oxygen, etc,. Garden with lawn has been formed in front of the

college. This helps in carbon off-setting.

Garden – College has a garden in the entrance of the college which enlarged the beauty of

the college. This garden has been developed by the NSS volunteers.

Campus cleaning – Students clean class rooms daily. The campus cleaning was done in

regular intervals by the NSS volunteers and students.

Waste paper management – The College uses the one side used papers for rough

work/office copy purposes and thus minimizes the use of papers.

Dust bin installation – Dust bins were provided to all class rooms, staff, library, ladies

room and toilets. Collected wastes were disposed-off by burying them in the ground and

plastics were bifurcated from it as it is not biodegradable one.

Transportation-students are encouraged to use public transport facility to come to the

college. This minimizes the use of fuels and helps to attain carbon neutral status.

Water harvesting- The rain water flow is directed towards ponds, bore-wells and ground

were the water is absorbed by the ground and thereby the underground water level is

maintained. Besides on the occasion of vanamahotsava guest lecturers were arranged to

educate the students on the importance of rain water harvesting.

Talks were arranged on alternative use of energy to educate the students on the use of

solar energy and wind energy.

7.2Innovations

7.2.1Give details of innovations introduced during the last four years which have created a

positive impact on the functioning of the college.

Cultural Pluralism-College is aimed at helping students to learn and respect other

cultures, maintain democracy, economic empowerment and justice.

Research Culture-Students are involved in research activities at their individual level as

part of the curriculum by conducting survey in various disciplines.

Cooperative learning-Students work in groups to complete tasks collectively towards

academic goals.

College has a very good sound system operated by the students. Senior students guide

the junior ones‟ in operating the same.

Photography of all the functions are being done by the students.

Master of Ceremony, Welcome speech, vote of thanks of most of the programs

conducted in the college are being done by the students only. Teacher convener of the

concerned association guides the students in this regard.

Students are encouraged to conduct fests, model competitions and other community

bases programs.

Students are encouraged to participate in street play to enlighten the general public on

social evils and community awareness programs.

Out come from the above practices:-

It gives opportunity to students to learn new things.

It helps in developing leadership qualities among students.

It saves the expenditure of the Institution and gives scope to the students to learn technical

knowledge of handling ICT related equipments.

7.3 Best Practices

7.3.1Elaborate on any two best practice in the given formatat page no.98, which have

contributed to the achievement of the Institutional Objectives and/or contributed to

the Quality improvement of the core activities of the college.

Best Practice I

Case Work:

Goal: The main goal of this practice is:

To identify the potential area of disequilibrium between individuals and group and to

prevent this disequilibrium.

To engage the client in problem solving process with his motivation and capacity.

To restore and being back the client to his previous condition.

Stimulate the client to have effective adjustment between the individuals and his

environment.

To strengthen the individual with maximum potential.

To provide the resources, both developmental and educational.

To reinforce i.e., to give encouragement to the client through training.

To enhance the problem solving capacity.

To establish a linkage to resource system.

To create awareness on psycho-social problems

Context: India is a developing country. More than 70% 0f the people live in villages and depend

on agriculture, petty business and small scale industry. They are facing many problems like,

poverty, unemployment, social evils like dowry system, intoxication, unscientific beliefs, psycho-

social problems, etc.,. The community service through case work can to some extent creates

Page 3: CRITERIAVII INNOVATIONS AND BEST PRACTICES

awareness among the society regarding these problems and educates them. BSW students take up

some cases, study them and identify the route cause for these problems.

Practice: Each individual student is assigned to identify two cases per semester in the field and he

has to do a detailed study on the case as a part of the study. He has to interact with the client and

the family. He has also assigned the work to visit the schools and homes to study on the subject.

After proper analysis of the case he will be writing the assignment on the case. On the basis of his

study he will arrange proper needy services and also give necessary guidance for future betterment.

Finally he evaluates the case and terminates the case.

Evidence of Success:

Students have succeeded in identifying the cases and route causes for the problem and solve them

by rendering needy services.

The following table shows the number and nature of cases handled by them:

Best Practice II

Social Survey:

Goal: The main goals of this practice are as follows To supply information about various social problems.

It is helpful to understand living condition of the people in a particular region.

Survey is a critical inspection, to provide exact information, often a study of an area with

respect to a certain condition.

Context: India is a developing country. Here people are facing various challenges. The social

survey helps to study their problems like illiteracy, poverty, sanitation, unemployment, scarcity of

water, crime, juvenile delinquency, labour problems, corruption, etc.,. Survey is helpful to search

good suggestions to overcome these problems.

Practice: Every year BSW students doing survey in particular area as part of their field work

practicum. Once in a year III BSW students are visiting tribal area to study their life style.

Best Practice III

Blood Donation: Goal: The main aim of this practice is:

To make students aware of the importance of blood donation.

Need for blood is constant so is the need for donation

To save the lives of the needy

To make students socially responsible citizens

To educate students that giving blood is safe and not painful

To awake students that giving blood is a civic minded and responsible act towards society

as a whole

Context: Every day, all the hospitals and clinics in Dakshina Kannada District need blood and

blood components to treat patients, since most surgical interventions and a great number of

medical procedures require blood transfusions. In Puttur Taluk itself bleeding death takes place in

hospitals because of maternal and accidents. The students have the satisfaction of saving a life by

this practice. Students and along with them their parents also come forward to donate blood

voluntarily.

Page 5: CRITERIAVII INNOVATIONS AND BEST PRACTICES

SSR OF GFGC BETTAMPADY

176

The Practice: The blood donation camps are held in the college twice in a year. The list of blood

donated students is maintained in the college and also in the Rotary Blood Bank Puttur. When the

need arises the volunteers informed in advance and they rush to the hospitals. The Rotary Blood

Bank, Puttur has appreciated this practice and come voluntarily to the college and collect blood.

Evidence of Success:

It is heartening to note that students voluntarily come forward to donate blood. The social

responsibility of the students was increased. There was demand from the student community to

organize medical camps like eye check-up, dental check-up etc., along with blood donation. The

blood donations organized once in a year changed to twice in a year. The following table shows the

units of blood donated for the last five years.

In the year2015-16 along with blood donation blood grouping of 281 students was also done.

Best Practice IV

Community service:

Goal:The main aim of community service is:

To make students socially responsible citizens.

To educate students on community service.

To facilitate various govt. schemes to the needy people

To inculcate service mind among students.

To arrange medical camps in needy areas.

To make students more secular.

To arrange programs on child health, women health, food and nutrition, communicable and

vector borne diseases, yoga and health, etc.,.

Context: India is a developing country inhabited by poor people. Cultivation is the main

occupation in India. But Indian society is facing challenges of eradicating poverty, social evils,

disparity between poor and the rich, corruption, etc.,. This should be educated to the students.

Community service is the right platform to unfurl this among students.

The Practice: Arranging medical camps.

Arranging survey programs on various issues.

Visiting orphanages, NGO‟s, Self employment training Institutes, tribal pockets, de-

addiction camps, home visits, PHC‟s, Anganavadies, primary schools and

Gramapanchayaths.

Arranging swatch and swasth Bharath Abhiyan programs in different areas.

35. SWOC analysis of the department and future plans:

i) Strength:

Well-equipped infrastructure facilities.

Well qualified teachers.

Wide opportunity to serve the community.

ii) Weakness:

Decrease interest in the course by the student and the public

Most of the students come from rural area so they are very weak in English

language.

Lack of publicity for the course in the university level.

iii) Opportunity:

Good Infrastructure facilities for the department.

There is ample scope for BSW graduates in Hospitals, NGO‟s, HRD departments and Social Welfare departments

iv) Challenges:

Retaining the course

Attracting students in to the stream.

Page 61: CRITERIAVII INNOVATIONS AND BEST PRACTICES

SSR OF GFGC BETTAMPADY

Convincing the public about the importance of the course

V) Future plans of the departments:

Organizing seminars and Workshops

To continue the student enrichment programmes.

Arranging guest lectures by eminent resource persons to build confidence among

the students.

To achieve 100% PASS percentage in all semesters.

To canvas the importance and job opportunities of the course in PUC level.
