Garden waste collections in Shildon and the surround-ing areas are due to resume from Tuesday 18th March.Residents who are part of the scheme will receive a leaflet detailing their specific collection dates, which can also be checked using the ‘My Durham’ facility on the council’s website at www.durham.gov.uk.Residents are advised to

put their garden waste bin out by 7am on their collec-tion day.Small branches, flowers, leaves, grass cuttings, weeds, prunings and hedge clippings can all be placed in garden waste collection bins.People are asked to put garden waste straight into the bin without using plastic bags to avoid con-tamination.

Garden waste collections re-start

Jason Todd, aged 38 of Bouch Street, Shildon, was recently due before magis-trates at Newton Aycliffe to face a charge of shop theft. It is alleged that, on 9th February, he stole two pairs of spectacles, valued at £586, from Simon Berry

Specs theftOptometrist, in Gilesgate, Durham. Sally Jacqueline Ingleby, aged 39, whose address was listed as The Travelodge, Gilesgate, was also linked to the case and faces a charge of receiving stolen goods, that being a pair of Coco Song glasses, valued at £243.

Kerbside collections for garden waste in County Durham will remain free this year and then look set to continue from 2015 as an opt in service with a small annual fee. Following a public consulta-tion last autumn, Durham County Council say that it is clear there is enough interest across the county to enable the service to continue with an annual fee of £20. If Durham County Council’s Cabinet agree a report next week, a further 35,000 households will become eligible to opt into the scheme, taking the total number to 186,000. In Teesdale the service will continue under the third sector group Rotters. The consultation also revealed that the majority of people willing to opt into the scheme wished to pay the £20 annual fee online via the council’s website. The council’s Cabinet will now be asked to agree the introduction of the fee from spring 2015, with the service remaining free for this year. Each home taking up the

annual subscription will receive 16 collections. Moving to a small annual fee will also allow the council to make the neces-sary saving of £933,000 for this service.Cabinet member for neighbourhoods and local partnerships, Cllr Brian Stephens, said, “I am very pleased we will be able to continue to offer this service in 2015 to those households wishing to opt in. There is clearly enough support to make kerbside collections with a small annual opt in fee viable and the fact that an ad-ditional 35,000 people will now have the choice to take it up if they would like to is excellent.“I would like to thank all those people who took the time to give us their views and I hope that many more homes will now decide to take up this offer.”Durham County Council faces required budget reductions of more than £224m (2011 – 2017) due to large reductions in Govern-ment grants. While local authorities

are not obliged to provide garden waste collections, of those which do, more than 35 per cent already charge separately for the service. The £20 annual fee is considerably lower than the national average. Locally, it is the same as that already charged by Newcastle City Council and a little less than that in Northumberland. All households eligible to join the scheme will receive a letter later in the year outlining how the service will operate and how the public can pay their subscription.Anyone opting to take up a three year subscription will be eligible for a discounted rate of £50. Households opting in will receive a unique number and sticker for their bin which will be cross refer-enced with a computerised system identifying those houses which are part of the scheme. Neighbours who want to share a bin can also make an arrange-ment between themselves to do so.

Homes and communities business livin has signed up to a new scheme to provide its tenants with a more affordable solution to expensive weekly payment stores. The Smarterbuys Store offers an affordable and ethical new way of buying household goods includ-ing TVs, white goods and furniture with payments up to 40 per cent cheaper than other weekly payment stores. Philip Pollard, head of fi-nancial wellbeing for livin, said: “Times are hard for our tenants and the risk of them buying goods or bor-rowing from less affordable sources could see personal debts become unmanage-able. “The Smarterbuys Store aims to protect our tenants by giving them access to the same quality products but at much more afforda-ble rates and from a source they can trust.

“The Smarterbuys Store has been developed in partnership with Northern Housing Consortium, Derwentside Homes and Prince Bishops Commu-nity Bank and was set up to provide tenants an alterna-tive to doorstep lenders, loan sharks and expensive weekly payment stores. The site also encourages tenants to save, by trans-ferring a minimum of 25p per week into a savings account set up as part of the ‘save as you buy’ scheme - which gives the customer the option of either taking the cash back at the end of the payment term, or continuing to save”.

Mr Pollard added: “By en-

couraging them to save we are also helping them plan for the future, as well as helping them build a healthy credit history.” Tenants can browse and purchase items by visiting www.livin.sbstore.org and apply for the weekly payment option. The payments are lower than other high street payment stores and the 25p minimum ‘save as you buy ’payment is automati-cally added, allowing the customer to save without having to think about it - they can even choose to save more if they want.

A Shildon man has been handed a 12 month commu-nity order after showing up at his ex-girlfriend’s house with a hunting knife. Dwayne Howard, from Redworth Road, tried to open his ex’s front door when he showed up at the house on 2nd December last year, but was unable to get inside due to a security chain.Paula Sanderson, pros-ecuting, told Magistrates at Newton Aycliffe that the victim had been warned by a friend that the 26 year-old was on his way to her home with a knife. She then dialled 999 and locked

herself in her bathroom where she waited for the police to arrive. Officers then searched Howard after they found him walking away from the property and found a hunting knife with a fixed six-inch blade tucked inside his jacket.Howard pleaded guilty to possessing a knife in a public place at a previous hearing, and on Tuesday 11th March was sentenced to a community order, in-cluding probation supervi-sion and 40 hours unpaid work. He was also ordered to pay £85 in court costs and a £60 victim surcharge.

Christopher Steven Newson was due before magistrates at Newton Aycliffe recently to face a charge of criminal damage, but his mother contacted the court stating that he was unable to attend, as he was suf-fering from sickness. Magistrates accepted the reason for the 29 year-

old’s non-attendance but stated that he would need to provide proof of his illness when he next appears before the court on 19th March. Newson, of Hilsdon Drive, Shildon, faces a charge that on 16th February, in Shildon, he destroyed the window of a front door.

Residents in Middridge can find out how local issues are being tackled when the Great Aycliffe and Middridge Area Action Partnership (GAMP) board meets later this month. The GAMP board will be meeting on Tuesday 18th March, between 6pm and 8pm, at Newton Aycliffe Youth and Community Centre, and local people are invited to go along to observe proceedings. The meeting will include

presentations on the council’s Medium Term Financial Plan, community resilience and an update from Durham Constabu-lary.Attendees can also raise any neighbourhood issues that they would like the board to address. These should be put in writing and sent in advance. To register to attend the meeting, call 01325 327441 or email [email protected].

Saint John’s Church was the scene of Egyptian activity on Friday 7th March, when women from the area came together to celebrate ‘Women’s World Day of Prayer’. Coordinated by Mrs Pat Todd of Saint John’s, those taking part in the service were encouraged to dress up in appropriate costumes

as they presented readings, prayers, and thoughts written by the women of Egypt. Reverend Elizabeth Cummings was the guest speaker and the congrega-tion enjoyed listening to what she had to say, as well as chatting with her over a cup of tea afterwards.Mrs Davina Tomlinson, in

colourful Egyptian dress, placed a home crafted Egyptian Ankh on a table of ethnic artefacts whilst Major Linda Watson of the Salvation Army attended as a contemporary Egyptian, complete with jeans and hoodie. “The event was a great success, and much enjoyed by all,” said Rev Tomlinson.

Shildon Neighbourhood Police Team have now marked and registered over 150 bikes during the course of visits to Thornhill and Timothy Hackworth Primary Schools. Officers are soon to attend Sunnydale and St John’s schools and hope to see that figure rise consider-ably.

The aim of the scheme is to both deter the theft of bikes in the town and also to assist in the recovery of stolen property. The marking programme is not restricted to school children however, and every bike owner is encour-aged to contact the police station to take advantage of the scheme by calling 101.
