UPCOMING EVENTS

On Wednesday, September 6 Gunnedah High School hosted the University of Newcas-tle (UON) Creative Industries Roadshow which was designed for career advisers, teachers and Year 10 and 11 students interested in creative industries. As the HUB School for the area we invited students and careers advisers from other schools to attend the event.

During the day students could choose to attend workshops in Film Making, Virtual Reality or Animation. These workshops are designed to reach Science, Technology, Engi-neering and Maths (STEM) students to intro-duce them to creative careers and Creative stu-dents to encourage STEM participation in their creative careers. In this way the workshops

extended students’ thoughts and perceptions around creative career possibilities.

The workshops were facilitated by UON stu-dent mentors currently studying in the Creative Industries faculty. They connected really well with our students and were able to communi-cate through their experiences the many real world applications and employment options that, courses like these offer.

Lucy and Kaitlin ready to take off

The excitement is mounting for Lucy Lincoln and Kaitlin Smith with their once-in-a-lifetime trip to Japan less than two weeks away.

The seven-day tour will be funded by Idemitsu Australia Resources with the aim of sharing cultural insights and introducing the students to Idemitsu and Japan. Three students from Muswellbrook will also be attending.

The tour will start and finish in Tokyo, and will include visits to cultural sites in Kyoto and Hiroshima, and a trip to Universal Studios or Tokyo Disneyland.

The opportunity was open to students who are part of Girls Academy, an interna-tional program launched at the school in March.

They will depart on Monday, September 25.

DATE CHANGE FOR YEAR 10 GEOGRAPHY CUSHAN'S EXCURSION

All Year 10 students will be participating in the Field Study Excursion to Cushan's Reserve on Wednesday, September 20.

Attendance is mandatory for completion of the Year 10 Geography course as it is an assessable item worth 30% of the students' final grade.

ELECTIVES CONTRIBUTIONS

Parents are reminded to please pay their child's elective contributions.

These fees are essential so that students can make the most of their electives through practical experi-ence.

Payments would be appreciated by Friday, September 22 as our school will be transitioning to a new finance system during the first few weeks of Term 4 and payment cannot be accepted during this time.

If your family is experi-encing difficulty in paying please send a letter to the Principal marked confiden-tial.

The Creative Industries Road-show is part of a research project being conducted by UON on how to promote these industries to students in regional areas. It is being funded by the Federal Govern-ment in recognition of the changing nature of work and the need to prepare young people for a very different workforce in the near future than the one that currently exists. Our students were engaged and enthusiastic about the opportunities they were introduced to in the cre-ative industries.

SCIENCEYEAR 8

Year 8 Science students had an assessment task building upon what they had learned earlier in the term about cells.

The task was to build a model of a cell, using what-ever materials they liked including labelled organelles (parts of the cell).

They then had to produce a poster that explained things about the organelles, cells and how cells make up

a larger organism (like humans).

All the submitted models in Mr Twining’s class were very creative and interesting, which would lead observers to look at the information on their posters. Some students chose traditional modelling materials (plasticine, foam, glue, etc.); while others chose to make edible models cakes and jelly with lollies and icing for organelles.

The English Faculty is looking for donations of second hand books to be sold at the GHS Community Fair in November.

SOUTHERN CROSS UNI DOUBLE SCHOLARSHIPS

To celebrate the launch of a new range of innovative degrees, Southern Cross University has doubled its scholarship pool for 2018 with the addition of 40 new $2,500 scholarships.

The new $100,000 schol-arship program will not only help attract talented stu-dents to new programs, but also help create a cohort of student leaders ready to contribute to the University and the community.

Current Year 12 students commencing first year of University study in 2018 can apply for these new scholarships before 30 November at scu.edu.au/scholarships

P&C'S WHITE ELEPHANT STALL

The P&C will be running a White Elephant Stall at our Community Fair on Friday, November 3.

During Week 9, Year 11 students who have aspirations to lead our school in 2018 gave speeches at morning assembly. They also had an interview with a panel of three judges. The votes are still being tallied but we'll let everyone know the successful candidates on Facebook as soon as possible. On Friday, September 8, Years 7, 8, 9 and 10 were involved in a variety of activi-ties during our annual Wellbe-ing Day.

These activities included workshops run by Tamworth Youth Centre that explored issues around bullying aware-ness and appropriate use of mobile phones. Fitness was also covered with workshops run by Beetle's Boot Camp and Ms Starke.

The day focused on encour-aging students to participate and develop skills and knowl-edge around healthy lifestyles and general wellbeing.

Thank you to everyone who participated the facilitators of the activates, the students and staff.

Towards the end of Term 2, Year 11 and 12 Chemistry students travelled to the University of New England (UNE) to participate in the state-wide Royal Aus-tralian Chemical Institute (RACI) Titration Competition.

Titrations are a scientific technique that allow for the strength of a chemical to be determined.

The competition was run at UNE over two days, and throughout the state for a week with 350 teams competing across New South Wales.

Our Year 12 students placed fifth out of all the teams that competed at UNE, and Year 11 placed thirteenth.

This is an excellent result for GHS Chemistry, especially as our Year 11 stu-

dents had only been introduced to titra-tions over three lessons, and Year 12 had limited practice time due to assessment demands. We look forward to competing next year!

Participating students were Lach-lan Batinic, Kustiani Tuckerman, Rory Wellham, Jacob Bush, Lucy Lincoln and Breanna Newcombe.

SENIOR STUDENTS EXCEL IN TITRATION COMP

Royal Life Saving Society conducted a ‘CPR Awareness Campaign’ at Gunnedah High School on Tuesday, Septem-ber 12 for Year 7 students.

The program was an excel-

lent opportunity for students to develop an awareness of the importance of CPR and learn the practical skills of performing CPR. Students also received a CPR pocket card.

CPR awareness for Year 7 students

On Wednesday, August, 30 Gunnedah High School held another transition visit for Year 6 students.

Students from Boggabri Public spent the whole day with on school grounds, while Gunnedah South students attended periods 3, 4 and 5. The students had the opportunity to attended a Mathematics, HSIE and Music lesson. The students had a very enjoyable time getting an insight into what school life will be like in 2018.

The next transition visit will occur for the rest of South School Students, Curlewis, Carroll and Gunnedah Public students on September 13, where students will participate in the same taster classes as those in Week 7.

YEAR 6 TRANSITION

Supporting your young person during

the holidays

Holidays can take students away from friends and their usual school supports.

Changes to routine can cause some young people to feel stressed, isolated and alone. Parent support is very important at this time.

Below is some information to help you support young people to stay in a healthy headspace in school holidays. There is also some information that may help you to identify when your young person might need some extra support and where to go for help.

Version 1 – June 2015

There are a number of ways you can support your young person’s mental health and wellbeing in the holidays:

1. Encourage them to stay connectedSocial relationships are important to your young person’s general wellbeing.

It is okay if they take time out for themselves at times, but encourage them to keep in contact with friends over the holidays. Friends can provide both play and support, and spending time with friends is also important for keeping and building on existing friendships.

If your young person is not feeling up to going out, even a phone call, email, text message or Facebook message can help them to feel connected to friends and family.

2. Encourage them to stay involvedEncourage involvement with volunteer work, hobbies, clubs or committees, or sports – these can help young people feel connected to their wider community. Participate with them when you can.

Involve them in decisions and give them responsibility at home (e.g. deciding what to eat for dinner and helping to prepare it).

Help them to identify and set realistic goals. Setting and achieving realistic goals can be incredibly motivating and can help build self-confidence.

3. Encourage physical activityPhysical activity is important for everyone’s health and wellbeing. If your young person is feeling down or finding things are difficult, physical activity may be the last thing they feel like doing. But even small activities, like walking around the block, can help relieve stress and frustration, provide a good distraction from worrying thoughts, improve concentration and improve mood.

If your young person is struggling to get active, find a physical activity that you both enjoy and can do together (e.g. swimming, playing sports with friends or cycling) and make a plan to do it regularly.

4. Encourage a regular routineGetting a good night’s sleep helps young people to feel energised, focused and motivated.

Adolescence is a time when a number of changes to the “body clock” impact on sleeping patterns and young people are more likely to have problems with sleep. Developing a sleeping routine can help. Encourage your young person to

headspace National Youth Mental Health Foundation is funded by the Australian Government Department of Health under the Youth Mental Health Initiative.

wake up around the same time each day, get out of bed when they wake up, and go to bed around the same time each night.

Avoiding caffeine after lunchtime, having a quiet, dark and uncluttered bedroom and shutting down electronic devices before bed can also help them to get a good night’s sleep.

5. Encourage healthy eating habitsEating well doesn’t only reduce the risk of physical health problems, like heart disease and diabetes, but it can also help with sleeping patterns, energy levels, mood, and general health and wellbeing.

A good balanced diet with less junk food/lots of sugars and more vegies, fruit, whole grains and plenty of water will ensure your young person has all of the vitamins and minerals to help their body and brain function well.

6. Encourage play! Devoting time to just having fun can help to recharge your young person’s battery, revitalise their social networks and reduce stress and anxiety.

Dear Parents/Caregivers,The term has flown but there are some major events occurring before the holi-days arrive.

NSW GOVERNOR VISITOn Wednesday, September 13 His Excel-lency General The Honourable David John Hurley, the Governor of NSW, and his wife Linda, visited our school.

As Governor he tours NSW and looks to support communities and projects aimed at community improvement in rural areas. He heard of the success of our Girls Academy program and wanted to see it first-hand. During his visit he had lunch with the Girls Academy and spoke with them about the operation of the

Academy. After lunch, the Governor and his wife viewed performing arts displays and performances, Science practical experiments, a tour our on-site Ag plot and then drove out to inspect the off-site Ag plot we are developing in partnership with Whitehaven. This is a development that I am very excited about as it will give students opportunities and experiences comparable to Farrer Agricultural School.

YEAR 12 GRADUATIONThe other major event occurring before the end of term is the Year 12 Graduation Ceremony on September 21. This will be the fifth graduation I have seen here as Principal and they are ceremonies of a high standard that reflect the community nature of Gunnedah High. There is always

strong community support and hopefully it will be a good day so the ceremony can follow the tradition of being in the Old Quad. These events always reflect the close relationships of the graduating groups and the relationship built over the schooling careers of the students with the staff. I encourage families and friends to attend this important ceremony marking the culmination of our Year 12 students' schooling.
