INTRODUCTION AND GENERAL INFORMATION

•  The purpose of an academic/research poster is to summarize information or research clearly, concisely and attractively to help publicize it and generate discussion.

•  A research poster can also present findings of an article to come. •  Posters are widely used in the academic community, with most

conferences including poster presentations in their program.   •  Poster presentations have achieved an equal status to paper

presentations and must be planned in order to achieve their goal. 2

•  A poster is similar to an advertisement in that it is meant to catch the eye of the viewer.

•  A poster is usually a mixture of brief text, tables, graphs, pictures, and other representations.

•  Kobayashi & Perez (2015) report that you have 3 seconds to grab the

attention of the viewer. •  At a conference, the researcher stands by the poster display while other

participants can come and view the presentation and interact with the author.

•  However, presenters are only with their posters for short periods of time (45-90 mins) so the poster must be self-explanatory.

Adolescent Health Literacy

Adolescent and Popular Culture Texts

Graphic Novels

These novels written by adolescents were then used by teachers in middle school classrooms to teach integrated health education and English language arts lessons.

Voices from Teacher and Students “It (Critical Media Health Literacy) means to read the ad, or look at the ad, and kind of process it yourself, and to critically think about the ad and what it’s telling you, what it wants you to do. And you decide if you want to do that” (Kate, age 12, Grade 7) “I think it means to be aware of what the point of the ad is, and also to realize what the ads want me to do, what ads want me to think” (John, age 14, Grade 8).

Implication for Practice

“[There’s a store in the novel called] PAG! Pretty awesome... There is actually a brand called GAP and PAG is GAP backwards!” (Tim, age 13, Grade 7).

“Contacts are way more complicated. I tried it for Halloween and it didn’t work”. (Missy, Age 12, Grade 7)

“That (Chasing Adland) was the one thing that was missing when we did the first unit. There wasn’t anything to kind of bring all the ideas together.” (Mrs. Day, teacher)

[o]n page 2 [a sign says] New contacts. Be yourself. 95% prettier and then on page 10 it says Be a Man. So that is pretty much the same too, because not all people, guys, want to be a Man, and they dont want to work out and they just want to be themselves.(Kate, age 12, Grade 7).

•  Adolescent health literacy, the ability to interact effectively with health information, is under researched (Manganello, 2008).

•  Innovative methods are needed to help us to investigate and disseminate research knowledge about health issues within the student population and especially in health education classes.

& Alvermann, 2009) and its numerous texts such as video games, television programs, YouTube clips and graphic novels.

We have been researching the use of graphic novels, a comic book style popular culture text, to involve adolescents in an innovative way to disseminate health concepts such as critical thinking about peer pressure, advertising messages, consumer habits and self-confidence. Available free from http://www.gvpl.ca/assets/PDF/Audiences/Teens/Chasing-Adland.pdf http://www.youth.society.uvic.ca/GraphicNovel http://www.gvpl.ca/audiences/teens/

Its like you assumed everything was nice, like perfect and then you got the hard realization that this isn’t always so nice, it’s kind of a façade to what’s actually going on. (John, 14, grade 8)

•  Using popular culture texts in classrooms can help to bridge to more academic topics (Schwarz & Crenshaw, 2011).

•  It is well known that adolescents have an affinity for popular culture (Heron-Hruby

•  Popular culture can have both positive and negative impacts on an adolescent audience. Too often, it delivers teens to advertisers and a world of stereotypical body images and behaviours.

•  Nevertheless, popular culture texts can also be

used to engage adolescents in creating their own narratives for an audience of their peers, using embedded research based concepts on critical health literacy. These texts can then be read/viewed by other adolescents.

•  The creation of a graphic novel is an innovative knowledge dissemination tool.

•  Reading graphic novels written by adolescents for adolescents seems to be an engaging and successful health literacy intervention move.

•  Teachers and healthcare professionals can adopt a dialogic approach to engage adolescents in discussing health issues.
