Urban Couture is a dynamic fashion program that aims to support the Western Australian fashion industry and bring fashion designers, photographers, textile artists and creative business entrepreneurs into the northern corridor of Perth. Now in its fifth year, Urban Couture has become a leading program in the Perth fashion calendar as it celebrates Western Australian designers who are challenging traditional forms of garment and exploring new technologies in fashion. It highlights students and emerging designers who are challenging the conventions and public perceptions of these disciplines by placing work within exhibitions, industry and performance environments.

Urban Couture will explore the relationship between garment and body, highlighting local and national trends and the cultural significance and practice of fashion design.

CALLING FOR SUBMISSIONSThe Urban Couture program engages a variety of creative disciplines, including but not limited to: stylists, graphic designers, professional photographers, musicians, performing artists, textile designers, models, hair and make-up artists, fashion illustrators and visual artists.

Urban Couture is seeking Western Australian fashion photographers to submit work for inclusion in the 2015 program.

Selected photographers will be invited to exhibit their work throughout the Urban Couture program to include:

• An online fashion photography competition

• A printed catalogue featuring all exhibited works

• Networking High Tea and Launch at the Breakwater

Online Fashion Photography Exhibition

An online fashion photography competition will be run from 1 – 30 March whereby photographers will be selected for the online exhibition. The following prizes will be presented at the Graduate Capsule Showcase on Wednesday 18 March 2015:

1. Most Outstanding Work – An independent selection panel select the most innovative photograph and award a $500 cash prize to the winning photographer.

2. Popular Choice Award – Popular Choice nominations from the general public will be taken during the course of the exhibition. The winning photographer will receive a cash prize of $250.

Urban Couture photographers will be promoted through the marketing campaign including national press advertising, print media, official program, social media, public relations and online strategies.

There is no participation fee for photographers.

Interested designers must complete the online application form available from the City of Joondalup website.

Selection CriteriaAn independent selection panel will convene to select the photographers who will be invited to participate in the program. Preference will be given to work that meets the selection criteria according to the panel’s recommendation. Canvassing of Elected Members will disqualify potential participants from selection and selection of works is at the City’s discretion.

5. Conceptual works that challenge traditional expectations of fashion photography.

7. Suitable for the target market and cultural profile of the program.

Terms and ConditionsThe terms and conditions for registration are detailed below. All entrants must agree to comply with these terms and conditions in order to enter. Terms and Conditions are subject to change at the discretion of the City. Further terms will be supplied to successful applicants with confirmation of acceptance.

Applications

1) Participation in this event is deemed acceptance of the terms and conditions of entry.

2) Multiple entries are permitted, subject to the following: (a) each entry must be submitted separately and (b) each entry must be substantially unique.

3) Application forms must be received by 14 November 2014. The City will not be responsible for any late, lost, misdirected entries, or incomplete or incorrect entrant contact details.

4) Applications, including digital files, may be used by the City for promotional purposes.

Specifications, Format and Reproduction

5) Due to the public location, works must be suitable for viewing by all age groups.

6) Work may be in colour or black and white.

7) Works may be submitted in portrait or landscape formats.

8) For selection purposes, photographers may attach a low res file to the application form.

9) For reproduction purposes, photographers must submit a high resolution 300 dpi tif file on disc. When posting the digital file, please label with the photographer name and title of work. All files on the disc must be individually named with the work title. Works will be enlarged and reproduced to the scale of 841 × 1189mm, therefore, must be of sufficiently high quality (eg. sharp, clear, good contrast, well-exposed images) for the reproduction and printing process.

10) The City will fund the production of the fashion catalogue as part of the Urban Couture program.

Installation

11) Installation and location of works will be at the discretion of the City based on curatorial specifications.

Copyright, Insurance and Legalities

12) Photographers grant the City the right to maintain a digital copy of the work; enlarge and adapt the work for the format of the installation; and exhibit the reproduced work between 1 – 30 March 2015.

13) Photographers warrant ownership of all copyright in the work or have obtained all necessary approvals to permit the use of the work in the exhibition.

14) The City may reproduce the work (or any part of it) in any media format, including but not limited to advertisements, postcards, brochures, posters and website for promotional purposes.

15) Whilst the City will take care to ensure the integrity and quality of the reproduced work, photographers acknowledge that enlargements and slight variations to the work may result from adapting the original work or the printing process.

16) In the occurrence of unforeseeable circumstances, the City reserves the right to cancel the event.

17) Photographs taken during Urban Couture and the Joondalup Festival by a certified photographer may be used by the City for promotional or archival purposes.

18) The photographer warrants that, to the best of their knowledge, there is no cultural, religious, legal or other reason that prevents the photographer’s entry from being exhibited, published or reproduced.
