See attachments. The department responded to 1,257 requests for service during the month of August. Community Service responded to 145 requests for service. The patrol division had another busy month handling calls for service. Even though we have been busy we still addressed traffic concerns though out our community by running radar and observing intersections for traffic violations. One particular intersection, (7th & Pershing) which we have several complaints on, was observed for one hour a day for three consecutive days without any blatant violations. This same intersection was also monitored in the month of July with the same results.

With the start of the new school year we have been spending time in the school zones to help ensure the safety of the students and the motoring public. We will continue to patrol in the school zones throughout the year to help provide a safe environment for students and motoring public. Currently, we are one officer short in patrol, to compensate we have assigned one of the SROs back to the patrol division as of September 2nd. This officer will stay in patrol until we are able to get someone hired and trained. Patrol officers are always the first responders; and do the initial investigations and crime scene security for cases like those mentioned in the Investigations Activity.

2. Community Service CSOs Josh Wright and Jill Nelson handled the following calls during the month of August.

Red tagged eighteen abandoned vehicles. One vehicle was towed. Forty-three weed complaints Seven code violations Thirteen junk/trash violations

Eleven code citations were issued No Abatements Conducted; Cost of Abatements – $0.00

3. Miscellaneous

August 2nd, department personnel participated in National Night Out.

In an ongoing effort to relocate the Turkey Vultures that have taken up roost in downtown Craig; the Craig Police Department in partnership with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service have been utilizing loud sound making devices, fired from rifles and shotguns to move the birds out of the City. The shots will be heard late in the evening, just before dark. Recently we have had several people call in reporting "shots fired". All of these reports have been related to the vulture relocation effort. Should you hear shots fired late in the evening, in the area of 7th and Taylor to the Courthouse it is in all likelihood police officers trying to move the birds. This method is being used because the Turkey Vulture is protected under the Migratory Bird Act. This seems to be working, but only for a short time. The birds seem to return as soon as we stop shooting for a day or two.

August 20th, Love INC hosted the Back-to-School Fair. Several department employees participated.

August 31st, Trapper Mine showed their appreciation for law enforcement by treating the Craig Police Department, Moffat County Sheriff's Office and Colorado State Patrol to a wonderful catered lunch. It means so much to all of us that they wanted to share a meal with use and express their gratitude. We are all blessed to live and work in this wonderful community. Thank you Trapper Mine for caring.

4. Investigations Division Activity - Commander Bill Leonard Investigations: On the morning of 08-21-16, a 4-month old boy was taken to the Memorial Hospital in

Craig for “unknown medical problems” according to the parents. Hospital staff here discovered the baby had a skull fracture and immediately flew him out to Children’s Hospital in Aurora. B y the time the baby reached Children’s Hospital, he had to be put on life support because of brain swelling and internal bleeding. The baby is still in critical condition as of this report. An evaluation by the Children’s Hospital Child Protection Team concluded that the injuries to the child were undoubtedly caused by “intentional” child abuse. Both parents are considered suspects at this time and charges are pending.

Other Activity: Sex offender paperwork review Numerous Sex Offender Compliance Checks-two found out of compliance Working on new medical release forms. 3 Liquor license renewal checks 4 Certified VINs, and one VIN re-stamp on trailer.

5. SRO Activity

Nothing to report until the 2016-2017 school year begins. 6. Training

During August, department personnel completed numerous CIRSA trainings online. Investigations attended Webinar’s covering new abandoned vehicle paperwork requirements by the Colorado Department of Revenue and on sexting.

August 1st through 4th, Records Technician Terrianne Wheeler attended the CBI Regional Symposium in Durango, Colorado. August 2nd, Detectives John Forgay, Jen Kenney and Norm Rimmer completed Law Enforcement Response to Sexting Investigations online. August 9th, Officer John Meyers completed I-9000 EBAT Operator – 2016 Annual Refresher Course training online. August 10th, Corporal Mike Edwards attended Intoxilyzer 9000 Operator Certification Course training at the Public Safety Center in Craig. August 25th and 26th, Records Technician Terrianne Wheeler attended Colorado Open Records Act in Grand Junction, Colorado. The August quarterly training for all officers consisted of our annual driving refresher class and interviewing children.

7. Upcoming Events On September 28th, we will be testing to fill the police officer position vacated by Tracy Reneau. October 14th, we will assist with the Moffat County High School Homecoming Parade.
