Dear Parents
A tremendous burst of fine weather has
highlighted that Spring is not too far away.
Our school has really enjoyed the
opportunity to have the children out on
the playground and today is a prime
example of taking the children from
regular class in the form of the annual Bike
day for Year 4 students. The children have
enjoyed a skills based activity day based
on bike safety. Mr Lewis and other staff
have provided valuable lessons on road
safety.
Also this week we have received
notification on the academic results of
several top scores in the University of New
South Wales Spelling and Writing exams.
These students will receive these awards at
the combined assembly being held next
week on Thursday, 4 September.
As part of our commitment to building
strong relationships with our local
preschools to enhance the transition to
school for children going to Kindergarten
in 2015, we hosted Good Start on
Wednesday. Thanks to parents and
students for attending what was a
wonderful day.
The school is gearing up for the Cowra
Show with many classes finishing off major
art projects. Stage 1 will be coordinating
the show display which will involve work
from throughout the school. We have been
overwhelmed with the extraordinary talent
displayed by our students and the level of
expertise shown by our staff.
As you would be aware a public meeting
was held at the school to speak about the
redirection of traffic from the main street
during alterations of the street scape in
Kendal Street. Cowra Public School has
shown concern on this issue and at the
back of the newsletter is the letter
presented by the Cowra Public School P&C.
The school supports the P&C concerns and
will be working closely with council and
RMS to ensure the safety of all children and
parents from our school.
PBL is a major part of our school culture
and we are delighted that through our
Positive Behaviour for Learning structure
that our children are respectful, safe and
on task. Often schools will enquire on the
success of the program at CPS and how
we implement our school wide lessons,
based on expectations and instruction as
we have been recognised for outstanding
practise on numerous occasions at both a
regional and state level. The staff work hard
to instil the strong values derived from the
program to the children, but it is the
children who need recognition for their
efforts. To congratulate and celebrate the
achievements of our children in PBL we will
be having a PBL reward day next
Thursday. The school will be hosting a
giant jumping castle and an enormous
7m slide. Children from Kinder to Year 6
will be involved at no cost in the activity
and parents are invited to come and
watch. Class timetables will go out next
week.
Tomorrow we have several children and
families travelling to Dubbo for the
Western Region Athletics. After a
tremendous result at the District Carnival
we are hoping our team can perform to
their highest ability on the day and get
the results they are capable of. Good
luck to the team and a huge thank you
to the parents for their support.
Archikidz is nearly here and the school
has been very busy in readiness of this
wonderful project that will see 50 of our
students participating in design and
construction based activities under the
instruction of engineers, architects, town
planners and a host of other
professionals. This is a Cowra wide
project that our school has instigated to
benefit the children of not only Cowra
but all country kids. It is hoped that this
may well be the first of many projects
that will involve Cowra children in the
future. More information on Archikidz
can be found on their website Archikidz
Goes Bush.
Enjoy the week

CANTEEN NEWS MEETING - WEDNESDAY, 3 SEPTEMBER at 2.00pm.
The canteen is looking to revamp its menu and we would love to
have parents' input into our new menu. The canteen committee will
be meeting on Wednesday 3 September at 2pm in the canteen to
discuss this, so if you have some great ideas please come along to
our meeting and share.
The canteen is desperately short of volunteers to assist in food
preparation and serving, so if you would like to volunteer some of
your time at our canteen, please get in touch with Lisa, our canteen
manager or the front office. Canteen is a great way to meet your
children's friends and keep in touch with what is happening within the
school.

FATHER’S DAY STALL
The P & C is holding a Father’s Day stall next
week.
This will be a great opportunity for all
students to participate in some independent shopping. All gifts are
priced between $2.00 and $5.00 and there is a great variety of gifts
to choose from. Some gifts are labelled for Dad and Grandfather
and the rest are unlabelled. There has been approximately 700 items
ordered, so there is stock for students to purchase more than one gift.
There will be a viewing of gifts on Tuesday, 2 September. The P & C
will go around all the classes and display the gifts for viewing. Primary
students can purchase their gifts on Thursday, 4 and Infants students
can purchase theirs on Friday, 5 September. Students may bring
their money in before these dates and leave it with their class

Peter Dearden RMS Regional Manager PO Box 334 Parkes NSW 2870
Dear Peter
We would like to voice our strong objection to the proposed diversion of heavy vehicular traffic away from the Kendal Street business district (while it is being upgraded, slated to commence January 2015) down Vaux Street, on which our school sits. Our objections are focussed on the safety and wellbeing of the 330 Kindergarten – Year 6 students who attend our school.
Vaux Street is the site of our school’s bus zone. This zone is already extremely busy at drop off and pick up time, so to add a heavy vehicle detour (plus vehicles that would otherwise be using Kendal St) to this route introduces enormous safety and con-gestion issues. As you know Cowra Shire Council and RMS hosted a public meeting at our school hall on Wednesday 13 August 2014, at which the best route for a heavy vehicle detour was considered. I attended the meeting along with a number of staff and parents from our school. Far and away the most popular option at that meeting for a heavy vehicle detour was to use Brougham (rather than Vaux or Liverpool) Street. Vaux and Liverpool Street both run past a school; Brougham Street does not.
I have since spoken to George Ridley (Director - Infrastructure and Operations) at Cowra Shire Council and he advised there are issues where Brougham runs into Taragala Street. Obviously I hope those issues can be solved, and Brougham Street is the detour route chosen.
Even if Brougham Street is the final route chosen, Vaux Street will still get a substantial increase in traffic flow – cars, smaller
trucks - while the Kendal St project completes, and probably beyond as driver’s habits change. The pedestrian crossing on Vaux
Street, near the Brisbane St intersection, is already an acute safety concern. Each day a school staff member is assigned to the
crossing, wearing a high-visibility vest, to ensure student safety. There are many, many reports from staff of dangerously close
calls – visibility lines coming out of the roundabout are poor, and cars do not obey the current 40km limit. Below is a list of what I
believe the school deserves in order to remain as safe as possible, in the event of either a Brougham or Vaux Street heavy vehicle
detour:
1. Flashing lights either side of the crossing. Currently such lights have been slated for installation after November 2015 – clearly this needs to be expedited.
2. New and larger signage alerting motorists to a 30km/hr speed limit during school hours. 3. Police presence at our pedestrian crossing at the start and end of the school day.
4. New higher fence to surround the school. Our current fence can easily be jumped to chase a ball etc.. A higher, substantial fence eliminates this risk.
Thank you for your consideration of these pressing issues affecting the safety of our students.
Yours sincerely
