rojkind arquitectos

an unused rooftop and helicopter pad was transformed into a productive

co-working space for 'transformadora ciel' as part of an ongoing

collaborationbetween the coca-cola company, mexico city-based rojkind

arquitectos and AGENT. using a conscientious application of new and

existing materials and systems, the space is created from a recycled

metal structure with most of the installations left exposed to cut down on

unnecessary finishing costs.

the helipad's industrial structure is reused in the construction of the

office, and a created green roof is covered in vegetative species that

are irrigated

through a rainwater collection system. the curving interior space is inset

from the edge of the roof line to allow natural light to illuminate the work

areas.

locally-produced modular furniture in an open fluid space allows

freedom in the arrangement and organization of desks, echoing the

dynamic flexible

nature of work. rooftop access expose amazing views of the city from a

garden environment lending to a respite from the typical office life. solar

CO WORKING AVEC ENFANTS -LONDRES

Environ un espace de coworking sur dix ouvre ses portes aux

enfants à la condition qu’ils ne perturbent pas les autres

coworkers. Très peu d'entre-eux fournissent un service de garde

pour les enfants donnant à un des parents ou les deux la

possibilité de travailler en paix. Ces services nécessitent un

investissement plus important qui est rarement associé à l'activité

principale d'un espace de coworking, tandis que les exigences

juridiques connexes ont souvent besoin d'encore plus

d'investissements. Nous avons visité trois espaces de coworking

qui, en dépit de ces défis supplémentaires, osent les assumer.

L'espace professionnel: Third Door (Londres, Royaume-Uni)

Les lois du Royaume-Uni pour la protection de l'enfance sont parmi les

plus strictes en Europe. Prendre des photos d'enfants autres que les

vôtres n’est pas autorisé. Même pour les fêtes d’anniversaire, cela

s'avère difficile, en théorie. À part si vous avez une licence d'Etat, vous

ne pouvez pas vous occuper des enfants qui ne sont pas les

vôtres.Third Door, un espace de coworking de la classe moyenne dans

le Sud-Ouest de Londres, dans le district de Putney, a une de ces

licences. Les conditions ne sont en aucun cas laxistes.

Pour commencer, les nouveaux visiteurs de l’espace de travail et de

jeux doivent être en conformité avec les exigences légales mais toutes

les pièces sont conçues pour être agréables.

Pendant que la mère et le père travaillent en paix au premier étage,

jusqu'à trois employés qualifiés s'occupent de leur enfant sur un grand

terrain de jeux lumineux au rez-de-chaussée. Les bureaux et salles de

réunion suivent également un code couleur vert et bleu. Les deux

sections partagent un salon qui fait aussi partie de l'entrée. Un troisième

espace commun réuni les membres entre eux : Third Door organise des

ateliers et des événements pour son réseau dans ses propres locaux.

Cafe Craft by POOL

Freelance writers and journalists can work for as long as they want without being

pestered by waiting staff at this black and white Parisian cafe by local design

studio POOL.

Designed for professionals who don't have a permanent office, Cafe Craft lets

customers use the internet and power points while they work but doesn't force

them to continually order food and drink for the privilege.

"We chose black and white for the walls to highlight the architectural lines,

staying mostly neutral so not to disturb the studious atmosphere," designers Léa

Padovani and Sébastien Kieffer told Dezeen. "We added yellow and brass

details to blur the border between cosy cafe and workshop.“

Different floor materials denote the three areas of the cafe: speckled terrazzo is

laid in the entrance, the serving area is surrounded by chequerboard tiles and

herringbone parquet is used in the workspace area at the rear of the cafe.

Community Table

At the heart of the concept, the large worktable embodies Craft’s identity. It

provides clients with 12 comfortable workstations, from which they can

freely use power outlets and Ethernet cables. The wooden apparent

mounting of the base winks at the workshop while its composite material

top surface refers to mass catering. Although from rustic inspiration, its

details unveil unexpected sophistication, a duality that runs throughout

the project and which characterizes the style POOL

Working with partners Seedcamp, Tech Hub, Springboard and Central Working,

the primary function of Campus will be to provide office space for startup

companies, but the facilities will also host daily events, offer regular speaker

series with leading technology and entrepreneurship experts, hold networking

events and run a constant mentoring program where Google staff will share their

experience and expertise with residents.

Non-residential registered users will have access to the cafe and co-working

space on the lower ground floor.

The design challenge was to take an unprepossessing seven-storey office

building and to create an interplay between dynamic, open, social spaces and

more intimate working hubs, with flexibility to accommodate a shifting workforce

and a diverse program of events…..

pariSoma Location: San Francisco

Cost: Memberships range from $100 to $545 a month.

The mix of creative workspace, events, classes (over 175 in 2011), and advisors

from places like Andreesen Horowitz, Blue Run Ventures and Twilio

givepariSoma members a rewarding work experience. The space features a

wrap-around mezzanine with permanent desks that look over the main area, and

more flexible, open space. Other cool factors: A hanging casing of a 737 jet

airplane, a vintage Bell Atlantic phone booth, and a couple of Google bikes for

coworkers to use. The pariSoma facility is used by more than 120 members and

60 companies, most of which are tech start-ups. PariSoma is owned and

operated by faberNovel, a consulting company that helps big companies think

and act like small start-ups.

Flip-Work Locations: Denver and New York City

Cost: Full-time memberships start at $325 a month in Denver and $550 a month

in New York.

These coworking spaces come highly recommended by DeskHero because of

their focus on sustainability and the environment. The Denver space has 40

businesses working from its solar-powered facility, replete with soft cork flooring

in the restrooms and original concrete elsewhere, all-natural clay walls with no

VOC paint and solar tube light fixtures. It also hosts events that raise social

awareness, such as a monthly vegan supper club and a “Handmade Homemade

Market” that features local vendors. Sixty businesses work from the New York

space, which brags of composting, eco-friendly cleaning products, and efficient

energy sources.

Miami Shared Locations: Miami

Cost: Memberships start at $50 a month.

While you may not think of Miami as a hotspot for tech start-ups, this coworking

space is doing everything it can to foster an environment of innovation there,

starting with offering memberships for as low as $150 for three months. When it

opened two years ago it let local tech groups use its space for meet-ups without

charge. Now that it has 60 members made up of small tech start-ups, creative

professionals and new media, it hosts workshops, speaking events, and

networking mixers to grow the Miami tech community. Other kinds of

entrepreneurs—such as lawyers, financial advisers, and real estate brokers—

also like to hang out here because of the coworking vibe.

BETA Haus Berlin Why are we kicking this list off with Berlin? Because this always-hip-attracting-

fresh-ideas-city was one of the first and most firm believers of the coworking

concept. BETA Haus claims to be the largest coworking space in Europe (>2.500

sq.mtrs.!!), but somehow it still manages to feel like a cool social community with

a vibrant composition members from different professional backgrounds and

nationalities with a certain “edge” to them.

Special features Many a startup in Berlin is proud to call him/herself a member

of the BETA Haus, due to its embracive attitude towards experimenting and

innovating. You can spend your day of work here, attend a workshop or build

your prototypes in their “maker area”. The BETA Haus also organizes hip-and-

happening trainings, coaching sessions, courses of that thing you always wanted

to learn – it is very active in stimulating the community interaction within the

“Haus”.

The HUB Kings Cross London

I know The HUB promotes a consistent story all over the world, but it’s most

interesting to see that it adapts its spaces globally towards a more local and

homely approach for each location. It adds local features in its design, adapts

programming to support the needs of its local community and more. That’s why I

couldn’t just simply ignore this other little gem The HUB has to offer, smack

down in the middle of London.

Special features Besides an ultra-hip environment with little corners and large

tables suiting all forms of coworking, this HUB boasts regular exhibitions,

speaker events, book launches, live events, networking events, knowledge-

sharing sessions and other such exciting events.

Price Please note that this HUB has a minimum sign up term of 3 months.

Monthly subscriptions including working space start at 40 GBP per month for 20

Le Studio Singuliers Paris

The ideal coworking space for global nomads in Paris, Le Studio Singuliers was

founded by 3 freelance designers who were tired of working home alone in their

bathrobes all day and eaves dropping on the washing machine’s spin-dry

cycle. The first studio is located in the heart of the business service centre “Paris

Région Innovation Nord Express”. Studios Singuliers provide 150 square feet of

office space with desks and a kitchen at the garden level (Yes! Garden. In

Paris!).

Special features Besides your usual conference room and auditorium, this

space offers a car park (note, VERY scarce in Paris), an amazing roof terrace

with panoramic views of the city’s business district, and even showers.

HACKER SPACE - DE

Un hackerspace, hacklab ou media hacklab est un lieu où des gens avec un

intérêt commun (souvent autour de l'informatique, de la technologie, des

sciences, des arts...) peuvent se rencontrer et collaborer. Les Hackerspaces

peuvent être vus comme des laboratoires communautaires ouverts où des gens

(les hackers) peuvent partager ressources et savoir1.

Beaucoup de hackerspaces utilisent et participent à des projets autour

du logiciels libres, du hardware libre, ou des médias alternatifs.

Ils sont souvent physiquement installés dans des maisons des associations ou

des universités, mais dès que le nombre d'adhérents et l'éventail des activités

augmente ils déménagent généralement dans des espaces industriels ou

d'anciens entrepôts.

Les activités qui prennent place dans un hackerpace peuvent être très variables

selon l'endroit. En général, les hackerspaces fonctionnent comme des centres

pour le partage et la transmission de connaissances par des pairs prenant

souvent la forme d'ateliers, présentations et conférences.

Ils ont aussi parfois des rôles plus ludiques vis à vis de leurs membres comme

des nuits de jeu ou l'organisation de soirées.

Ils fournissent typiquement de l'espaces à leurs membres pour mener à bien

leurs projets individuels, ou collaborer avec d'autres membres sur des projets de

groupe.

Les hackerspaces peuvent aussi être de lieux de mise en commun d'outils

(materiels ou logiciels) sous diverses formes (prêt, location...)2.

REALIZE – MAKERSPACE - BXL

Realize est constitué de plusieurs espaces aménagés et remplis d’outils pour

que les artisans, artistes, entrepreneurs, créateurs, constructeurs, bricoleurs,

Makers et curieux puissent y réaliser pratiquement n’importe quel objet.

Rejoindre Realize, c’est avant tout décider de réaliser ses idées et de le faire en

compagnie d’une communauté créative, enrichissante et solidaire.

Realize s’inscrit dans la lignée des MakerSpaces (de la famille des FabLab,

Techshop ou HackerSpaces) qui fleurissent de part le monde.

« Un [MakerSpace] est un endroit le plus souvent partagé et ouvert qui a pour

but de faciliter la rencontre, l’échange de connaissance entre les gens via des

workshops, des présentations, exposés, etc. Il permet aussi à ceux qui n’ont pas

ou pas suffisamment de place, ou encore pas le matériel approprié, de mener à

Un des aspects particulièrement intéressant de ce type de collectif est

l’exploration des nouvelles technologies de production pilotées par ordinateur

(imprimante 3d, découpeuse laser et fraiseuse CNC). Celles-ci ouvrent la porte

à la production locale et en série d’objets sur mesure et sans limite de

complexité. Nous sommes convaincus que la démocratisation des ces nouvelles

possibilités va changer le monde et nous voulons être des acteurs de ce

changement.

FAB LAB – MUSEE GRENOBLE

Do it yourself ou comment fabriquer à peu près n’importe

quoi par soi-même ! L’ère du numérique transforme les manières de vivre, de penser et de

créer. Dans le monde de la conception des objets et du prototypage

rapide, la révolution est en cours. Les machines à commande numérique

que les industriels utilisent deviennent accessibles au grand public dans

des ateliers ouverts baptisés "Fab Lab". Les Fab Lab offrent la possibilité

à tous d’imaginer, de fabriquer et de partager ses idées et ses savoir

faire avec le plus grand nombre en utilisant des outils professionnels et

numériques.

Le Fab Lab est un concept né aux Etats-Unis. Neil Gershenfeld,

professeur au MIT *, propose un cours à ses étudiants qui consiste à

"construire à peu près n’importe quoi" avec un nombre limité de

machines standards. Le succès est tel que l’idée se développe en dehors

des universités et essaime dans le monde entier. Plus d'une soixantaine

de Fab Lab ont émergé en Amérique, Europe, Afrique et Asie. La

technologie se démocratise, les process de fabrication aussi.

METAL SHOP

On the northern banks of the River Limmat, extensive civil engineering work has

made it necessary to construct a replacement building for the open metal

workshop of the youth culture centre Dynamo. This provides an opportunity to

redesign the site occupied by provisional buildings. In response to the large

number of restrictions, the development area has been reduced to a minimum

and a spacious, protected zone for work and activity will be provided by a large

roof protrusion around the whole building.

Set in front of the two listed youth centre buildings, the mushroom-shaped

pavilion asserts itself as an autonomous object and has a confident appearance

on the Limmat promenade. The construction and material of the building take up

the theme of metal and its treatment: a hot-dip galvanised steel profile grid covers

the skeleton structure in the area of the facade, roof soffit and roof edge. The

sturdy outer shell is like protective armour and gives the building a homogeneous

and corporeal appearance. The outer skin is fixed to the building based on the dot

matrix of profile grid mesh and follows the logic of the material, as does the

application of the lettering.
