The Box leagues have started

on track for promotion for the

4th year running. Not letting

their more illustrious members

have all the glory, the men’s

2nd team have won all their

games and top division 7, and

with only three matches to go,

they too are on track for a

second year in a row promo-

tion; most encouraging is the

performance of several prom-

ising junior players, namely Joe

Davies, Sean Boga-Lake and

Harry Harpin. Club captain Ian

Duggan said he is extremely

pleased with the way the

men’s section is progressing

with league performances but

warns of complacency if they

are to get over the promotion

finishing line.

The ladies teams are having

mixed fortunes at the moment,

partly due to availability diffi-

culties. The ladies 1st team,

despite some good perform-

ances that have resulted in 3

draws out of the five matches

played are in 5th spot in divi-

sion 3East. The 2nds find

themselves in top spot in divi-

sion 6East which as it stands

puts them in a promotion posi-

tion.

The important role of 'Club Captain' is a new one for CTC. I see my task as liaising with individual team captains - men and ladies - so as to get more people wanting to participate and ENJOY the extra challenges of SWLTA League tennis. The transition upwards from recreational tennis to League tennis success requires players to simply 'raise their game' - especially with regard to the 3 'C's : 'Competence', 'Confidence', 'Commitment'. Let's start by remembering a famous sporting adage - "Confidence is prepa-ration in action !". Thus, we need more commitment to attend our important 'Team Nights'. These practice nights need restructuring to include 'unit skills' such as improving our racket/stroke competences through coaching and drill-ing. Our future path for improvement is simpler & clearer if we reverse the above sporting maxim - "Action better our preparations to dynamically ex-pand confidence levels!". Our Tuesdays [Ladies] and Thursdays [Men] ses-sions together are crucial therefore and done properly can also become ma-jor catalysts for boosting individual enjoyment & team camaraderie!

to have great fun as did the

organisers!

As a result of the mornings we

gained several new junior

members and a lot of more

enthused parents! There were

some children with real talent

as well, certainly worth nurtur-

ing if we are to avoid our more

talented youngsters drifting to

other clubs in the area.. Some

useful feedback was obtained

and lessons learnt from this

trial which will be further dis-

cussed by the organisations

for an even better experience

in the future. Most important

of all was that nearly all the

children expressed an interest

in following up these sessions

Junior News

The junior section of Cowbridge

tennis club held a series of

‘Open to all’ mornings on Satur-

days in May to try and encour-

age a more "happening' kids

scene within the club. Each of

the 2 hour "Anyone4Tennis"

sessions were run by club cap-

tain Ian Duggan (Level 1 coach)

and Colin Rees (junior co-

ordinator) with able and much

appreciated assistance from

CLT Committee members, and

a special thanks to, Niamh

Hempston for her help.

The new junior equipment we

acquired was great and groups

of 7 to 14, 8 to 12 year olds en-

joyed the informal but well struc-

tured sessions.

The sessions followed the tem-

plate of goal setting, warm up

specific to the teaching point

being worked on that particular

session (e.g. volleys) and then

specific exercises drilling that

discipline. We concluded with a

When did you join CLT?

Joined originally 1997, but rejoined in 2009

What is involved in your role as Junior Coordina-

tor?

Took over junior co-ord from Caroline who did a

great job, I feel my task is to increase aware-

ness for juniors within the club and establish

much needed future players for succession

planning. Also to have a bit of FUN

When did you take up tennis?

Started playing during Wimbledon fortnight as a

kid Of course. John McEnroe was my hero

hence my behaviour on court! Didn't seriously

start playing until a couple of years Back thanks

to Al Duggan

Federer or Nadal?

Although I appreciate Federers artistry I love

Rafa's battling spirit and also his attitude as a

person - what an awesome role model!

What’s been the best tennis tip/advice you

have been given?

That I make a good lasagna for the post match

meal

Favorite Joke?

The Grim Reaper came for me last

night, and I beat him off With a vac-

uum cleaner. Talk about Dyson with

death!

Hopes for CLT?

To become a thriving competitive

and social club within the town where

people meet to watch Wimbledon

and the French Open etc... Over a

drink, and to have a vibrant junior

scene with good juniors coming thru

aspiring to play ( indoors in our bub-

ble) on the Premier 1 league cham-

pion winning first team!!!!

You will fly EasyJet from Bristol

airport to Murcia is Spain then

take a 35 minute transfer to our

resort, La Manga Club, and self

catering accommodation. You can

have either 10 or 25 hours of

tennis included in the price. If you

opt for the 10 hours, you receive 2

hours of group tuition for 5 days.

The 25 hour option gives three

hours tuition each day with two

hours of tournaments every eve-

ning. And if that’s not enough, you

can book your own court time on

top!

There are two levels of accommo-

dation available, standard or lux-

ury. Four people sharing standard

Do you fancy playing a bit of

tennis in sunny Spain?

It might seem a little early to

be thinking about 2013 but a

group holiday could take

some organising. We thought

an annual trip abroad might

be a nice way to start the

season so we have been

investigating what is on offer.

We’re currently just investi-

gating the possibility but

would like to gauge interest

and so we’ve developed a

sample package.

We have selected a holiday in

Spain that gives plenty of

opportunity to play tennis, is

just 35 minutes from the

airport and easily accessible

self-catering accommodation

will cost approximately £526

(£794 for luxury accommoda-

tion) plus £150pp for flights

and transfers.

To get more details visit the

resorts website at http://

tennisholidays.co.uk.

To finalise costs we need to

confirm the preferred holiday

week and how many people

are interested in joining us. If

you are interested in joining

this trip please complete the

survey (click here) by July 7th

so we can make detailed pro-

posals. Alternatively complete

survey by going club website.

We are on the web!

http://cowbridgetennis.webs.com/

We have 4 floodlit courts and the all weather playing surface means that club

activities run all year round

Social tennis sessions are on Saturday afternoon and Monday evening. This is

when our members all come along and mix in, however, we do ask that players are

able to play the game and 'rusty rackets' and beginners are encouraged to have some

coaching practice first

There is a ladies morning every Wednesday with coaching included. This friendly

session is also open to non members for a small fee and is particularly suitable for

intermediates and beginners

Junior coaching is on Thursday and Friday evenings and Junior Tournaments

include the National Club League and 'Road To Wimbledon' events, along with

squad sessions and school holiday coaching camps.

There is men’s practice every Thursday throughout the year starting from 6pm and

usually concluding at 9pm in the 'Bear'!, all adult males and invited juniors are

welcome. The emphasis is on performance play and preparation for team matches,

for this reason pairings will reflect the varying abilities whilst also encouraging devel-

opment by playing against the more advanced players when appropriate. Team

captains are in charge of events on this night.
