After falling to Liberty during the dual meet season, the varsity girls cross country team made sure there would be no repeat of that defeat at the BVAL Championships on November 6, as they placed four runners in the top seven spots to place first at the league meet and earn a share of the overall league title with the Lions.

Senior Sarah Smith led the way with a third-place overall finish for the Patriots, and she was joined on the first-team by Sabrina Rog-ers, Renny Buchahan and Lauren Lane, who all finished in the top seven overall. Chloe Zimmerman rounded out the top five runners for the Patriots, who scored five points better than Liberty to bring home the league championship for the first time since 2012.

Meanwhile, the boys were paced by sophomore Dominic DePiero, who placed fourth overall in the varsity race to lead the Patriots to a second-place finish as a team. James Woolery and Hunter Sturtz also each earned first-team all-league honors.

Both teams will finish their season on Saturday at the NCS Champi-onships, at Hayward High School.

  • Tennis sweeps way to title The Heritage girls tennis team captured its eighth straight BVAL

title this fall, and earned some top individual honors along the

    way.

Sophomore Erin Crane knocked off three-time defending league

champion Alexis Matabuena of Freedom in the BVAL singles cham-

pionship match to capture league MVP honors, while Alyssa Duran

and Sofia Sormani won the league doubles title, beating team-

mates Tammy Sison and Alana Chicaine in the league title match.

The Patriots’ doubles teams also experienced success at the NCS

Championships. Sison and Lindsey Amaro combined to win their

first-round doubles match over the top team from Bethel-Vallejo,

while Duran and Sormani stormed past the top team from San

Leandro. Both teams, however, were eliminated in the section

    quarterfinals.

With Amaro as the only senior among the top Heritage players, the

future continues to look bright for a program which has now be-

come associated with consistent success in the BVAL and NCS.

    Athlete Spotlight Athlete: Sarah Smith

    Year: Senior

    Sport: XC/Soccer

Sarah is not only a top ath-

lete, but a top figure around

    the Heritage campus. She

    is ASB President, maintains

a GPA close to 4.0 and

    plans on competing in three

    varsity sports during her

    senior year.

    Sarah was the top Heritage

    runner at the BVAL cross

    country championships,

    earning first-team all-league

    honors in the process. She

    has been a first-team all-

    BVAL selection in each of

the past two years for girls

    soccer, and recently signed

    her National Letter of Intent

    to play college soccer at

    Sacramento State.

    She also plans on compet-

ing in track and field this

    spring, as a long sprinter

    and middle-distance runner.

  • Volleyball reaches NCS playoffs

The Heritage girls volley-ball team once again reached the NCS playoffs, for the 13th straight season, after fin-ishing in second place in the BVAL.

Among other highlights this season was the pro-gram reaching 250 wins, with all of them as current head coach Janet Hanni-gan at the helm. The Pa-triots reached that mark during the Stockton Clas-sic, defeating Bear River in three sets. They fin-ished the season with 255 victories all-time.

    Water polo

    teams both

    reach playoffs

    Despite falling to rival

    Liberty in the inaugural

    BVAL title games, both

    Heritage water polo

    teams reached the NCS

    playoffs.

    Once there, both put up

    strong efforts before bow-

    ing out during the first

    round.

The boys fell to Foothill in

    a rematch from the regu-

    lar season, while the girls

    sung a familiar tune,

    dropping a 10-8 decision

    to Napa. Every defeat for

    the Patriot girls’ team this

    season came by three or

    fewer goals, and all but

one of them came by two

    or fewer goals, including

    six one-goal defeats.

The Heritage varsity girls golf team displays its seven straight league titles

    Golf captures seventh straight title

The Heritage girls golf team captured its seventh straight BVAL title

this fall, once again going unbeaten in league play.

After going a perfect 10-0 in dual meets, and then posting the low

score of 481 at the BVAL Championships, 37 strokes lower than

second-place Freedom, the Patriots headed back to the NCS Divi-

sion 1 Championships, which were postponed two days following

the fire and air quality issues in the North Bay.

Back on the familiar Lone Tree course, the Patriots lowered their

team score even further at the NCS Championships, shooting a

477, led by senior Aiyanna Co’s round of 79, followed by an 86

    from Kendall Overgaard.

Geraldine Critica also shot under 100 for the Patriots, while Hanna

Auchynnik, Ambria Gee and Amanda Rubin finished a solid season

with another strong day on the links.
