A word from...Hello and welcome to Reaseheath College! My name is Rob Sparkes and I am the President of the Student Association (SA) for the second year running. I hope you found that our Freshers’ fortnight made you feel welcome and comfortable and that the Freshers’ Crew helped you in the transition into campus life. Myself and the Freshers’ Crew have thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and hope you did too. Please feel free to come and visit me or Lisa Harris (Student Liaison Officer) in the student bar for any suggestions or ideas you have to do with college life. I’m Tom, this is my second year at Reaseheath, studying Wildlife Conservation and Ecology. It’s also my second year working as part of the Student Association team and I’m really excited to have been promoted to the Vice President position this year. It’ll be fantastic to continue fundraising for another inspiring RAG charity and I’m proud to be part of a team that represents the student body. Tom Allen Vice President

This is my 4th year on the Student Association, and after the success of last year I am now Vice President. This year I hope to put on many more social events, help raise this years target of £25,000 for RAG and make this year’s Summer ball the best yet!

Wagner Kicks off

#rhfreshers 2015

To kick off Reaseheath HE Freshers Week 2015, on the first evening we had a special appearance from the one and only Wagner, a previous X-Factor contestant from 2010. Needless to say, he gave a rocking performance for our new and returning students! Here’s some photos showing how much you guys enjoyed his performance. Mid-week, Reaseheath began its year of socials with a bright and colourful UV festival theme, in which you all got very involved and covered in colourful paint! Some members of the Student Association (SA) team gave us some quotes on how they thought the week went, and their opinions on this year’s SA crew. Check them out opposite.

Reaseheath’s RAG charity for this year is the British Heart Foundation (BHF) and our target to reach is £25,000. The BHF is such a worthy cause, their mission is to win the fight against cardiovascular disease and their vision is a world in which people do not die prematurely or suffer from cardiovascular disease. 7 Million people in the UK are living with cardiovascular disease and BHF are doing amazing work in leading the fight against it.We have many upcoming events to raise money for the BHF such as a dodge ball tournament, cake sales, bar events, sports events and much more. Look out for posters and Facebook posts for information about what’s going on and how to get involved! We need your help to raise £25,000 for the BHF - they fight for every heart beat and so can you!Dannii Benson RAG Chair

We are the Reaseheath Bird Society, we survey and observe birds around campus. If you’re interested in birds, feel free to join our Facebook group to keep updated with any news and information.

Reaseheath Herpetological and Entomological Society: (RHES) looks at conservation and scientific study of reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates by undertaking a number of projects, trips and skill building tasks. The society meets in AM1 at 1pm on Wednesdays. Come along and see what we are all about!

Reaseheath Mammal Society primarily work and investigate the mammal species available across campus, exploring a variety of surveying and trapping techniques. New members are always welcome, we meet fortnightly on Wednesdays and you can also join our Facebook page for further information.

JOIN A SOCIETYConservation Society: The Conservation Society is comprised of over 100 students enthusiastic about conserving animals of the natural world. We meet weekly on Wednesdays at 4.40pm so feel free to come along if you feel like joining and being part of the team.

A note from our Chair As Chair my main roles involve organising agendas for weekly meetings. I work with my committee to organise events that the society may be hosting or attending. I also liaise with staff who assist with the society, and write up monthly KPIs to show how the society has been performing and progressing throughout the year.

I enjoy being able to meet a bunch of new people who are conservation minded, it allows us to be social whilst also doing work in a field I’m passionate about. I look forward to seeing the variety of speakers that have been able to come in and give the society talks on what they’re specialised in. I especially enjoy the more practical side, such as performing surveys and managing the conservation garden. This type of work is what I would like to pursue so interests me a lot.

Over the last few weeks the Conservation Society has been working on a number of new projects. First we hosted Lou and Phil from Fin Fighters who gave a fantastic presentation to the society on global threats facing sharks today and what we can do to help to change these issues.

The society have also been working to improve the conservation garden. So far two wild flower beds have been planted and a compost heap has been built along with many other improvements made. In the future we are looking to include even more flower beds, take better control of the stinging nettle problem and introduce bug hotels and bird feeders.

The Sports PagesA word from the chair

Women’s netball teamNetball training takes place on a Monday evening 7-8pm in the sports hall. The team will be competing in the Northern Counties league as well as other local colleges and teams.

Hi I’m Connor, I am the sports chair this year and the football captain for the residential team. I’ll be working closely with Sarah Ruff (College Sport Maker) to help promote sports and participation. Hope see lots of you taking part throughout the year, there’s loads of great opportunities to keep fit and make new friends!

Training takes place on a Tuesday evening from 5pm on the sports field. The rugby team have started this season in a positive way by winning their first league game 57-5 away at Holy Cross. It is hoped this good form will continue as they aim to retain their Northern Counties crown as well as challenging for the AoC North West title.

Men’s recreational football teamThe recreational football team currently trains on a Monday evening from 6-7pm on the sports field. They compete in the Northern Counties league which they were successful in winning last year as well as playing other local teams.

I am delighted to welcome

Settling into a new environment is

often challenging and I am sure you

will have received a lot of support

and help from staff right across the

College. In addition to this I know

that the Freshers’ Crew and the

Student Association put a huge

amount of work in helping the staff

team prepare for the return of our

students. I thank both the Freshers’

Crew and the Student Association

(SA) sincerely for their great efforts.

The SA plays a very important

part in College life, from helping

College Management with significant

decisions to organising social

activities and fundraising events for

our chosen RAG charity British Heart

Foundation. I’d urge you to fully

engage with the SA, as the more

you put into college life the more

enjoyment and learning you will get

out of your time with us.

As you’ll be aware the College

was recently visited by OFSTED

who’s responsibility it is to judge

educational providers across the

country on their ability to provide

good quality education to young

people and adults. I am very pleased

to inform you that following our

inspection Reaseheath College has

been given very positive feedback

with many strengths including;

· a clean, safe and welcoming

campus

· excellent learner behaviour and

demonstration of the College’s

PRIDE values

· high professional standards in

lessons and practical settings

· excellent learner satisfaction with

96% of you recommending the

College to a friend

I would like to formally thank all

of you for helping us to show the

inspectors what a wonderful place
