5. Proposed Changes 

Three major changes: 1. Context‐based curricular integration to promote better comprehension and retention of what is learned. 2. Emphasis on Personal and Professional Development of the Individual Student – this is accomplished by 5 “Personal and Professional Development” courses and a Co‐curriculum 3. Milestones to document student achievement (longitudinal tracking is part of the “Personal and Professional Development” coursework; students must achieve competency‐based criteria at the end of each academic year in order to progress to the next year.  Remediation opportunities have been incorporated into the new curriculum.  For more information, see: http://pharmacy.ufl.edu/education/student‐affairs/doctor‐of‐pharmacy‐curriculum‐2015/   

6. Pedagogical Rationale/Justification 

At a national level, pharmacy educators have reconized the importance of the 3 reasons that are listed above for the curricular change.  The use of integrated coursework, competency‐based assessment ‐ milestones,  and development of soft‐skills (via personal and professional development and the co‐curriculum) is now documented in the educational literature as being important pedagogical approaches. The new curriculum also increases the use of the flipped classroom and there is significantly more active learning during year 1.  The new curriculum also incorporates new ACPE Accreditation requirements that will begin in July 2016. 

7. Projected Impact on Initial Enrollment, Retention, Graduation 

The College has already received University approval to reduce student enrollment from 300 per year to 270 per year.  This was done because the new curriculum requires a lower student:faculty ratio and we do not have the skills lab space for students on the current St Pete Campus.  The new curriculum is intended to increase the number of applicants because it uses innovative approaches.  Retention should be similar or enhanced due to the attention to remediation in the new curriculum.  There are no issues with availability of seats in classes. 

Prepare a document showing the catalog copy with the current and proposed curricula either in a side‐by‐side comparison or edited using the “track changes” feature in Word. 

Prepare supporting documentation from other colleges indicating availability of seats in courses that are affected by the change in credits and support for the proposed application, if overlap is a concern.
