Coursework tool – Uploading Coursework The majority of schools use MMS for the upload of coursework. To Upload coursework assignments:
1. Log into MMS directly at https://mms.st-andrews.ac.uk/mms/ or via the ‘My Courses’ tab in MySaint
(https://mysaint.st-andrews.ac.uk/).
2. Locate the link to the Coursework tool for your module, click on this to be directed to the coursework
overview.

3. The Coursework tool in MMS has changed to allow for originality checking using Turnitin – some
assignments will now be run through Turnitin. If your submission has to go through Turnitin there will be
a link in the ‘File’ column entitled ‘Submit file via Turnitin’. If the file does not need to go through Turnitin
then there will be the standard MMS browse and upload function.
Figure 2: Locate the assignment that you wish to upload to and check the ‘File’ column. If there is an upload button then select the file to upload. If there is a ‘Submit file via Turnitin’ link – click the link.
3.1. Turnitin Submissions
3.1.1. If the assignment is to go through Turnitin it is highly recommended that you clear your cache and
cookies before starting the upload process. Instructions can be found here:
http://telsta.dropmark.com/295093/13781348 ).
3.1.2. After clearing cookies and caches click the ‘Submit file via Turnitin’ link in MMS to be directed into
Turnitin (see Figure 2).
3.1.3. Click the ‘Upload Submission’ button (see Figure 3).
3.1.4. Click the ‘Browse’ button to select the file (see Figure 4).
IMPORTANT: Your file must be in a supported file type and smaller than 40MB. Accepted file types
are listed underneath the ‘Browse’ button.
3.1.5. Once the file is selected, click the ‘Upload and Review’ button If you have selected the wrong file –
click the ‘Cancel’ button and upload a different file (see Figure 5).
3.1.6. Review the file that you have selected, ensuring it to be the correct file, and click the ‘Submit to
Turnitin’ button (see Figure 6). If you have uploaded the wrong file click the ‘Cancel Submission’ link.
3.1.7. The submission will now appear on the Assignment Dashboard in Turnitin. A receipt can be
downloaded from the Turnitin dashboard. To return to MMS click the ‘Modules’ icon in the header
(see Figure 7).

Turnitin issues
Some users may receive an error when they are first sent through to Turnitin, this will probably be along
the lines of “We are sorry, but it appears we are experiencing an issue at this time. Please try again in a
few moments. If this issue persists, please contact Turnitin Product Support”, this error can be resolved
by using a private browser mode or by clearing cookies and caches (instructions can be found here:
http://telsta.dropmark.com/295093/13781348 ).
If the submission is taking too long to process by Turnitin, check that the file you are trying to upload has
the extension clearly indicated such as ‘file.docx’ or ‘file.pdf’, and not ‘file.docx.pdf’. Turnitin cannot
accept files over 40MB or ZIP files. If Turnitin is having problems processing your pdf, it may not be
encoded correctly for Turnitin, usually exporting the file as a pdf (via the ‘file’ menu’ on your word
processing software) will resolved this.
3.2. Standard Upload
Some assignments may not be suitable for Turnitin but the school may still wish a copy of the assignment
– in which case they will use the standard MMS upload. To upload directly to MMS:
3.2.1. Once in the coursework tool locate the assignment (see Figure 2) and click the ‘Browse’ button in the
‘File’ column.
3.2.2. This will open a dialogue box from which you can select the file - the exact mechanism will depend on
your browser (see Figure 8).
3.2.3. Once the file is selected click the ‘Upload’ button to upload it to MMS (see Figure 8).
3.2.4. An icon representing the file should now appear in the ‘File’ column and you will receive a
cryptographically signed receipt from MMS to your email account.
Figure 8: For standard uploads, click the ‘Browse’ button to select the file and then the ‘Upload’ button to upload it to MM
If you have any queries please contact the IT Service Desk with the file you want to submit, the name of the
assignment and the module code.
