STUDENT PROFILEKerstin, Ceramics student

I’m a stay-at-home mum and my little one has gone to school. I started on Ceramics Beginners and I loved the place from the start. It has got a really nice atmosphere to it, when you walk through the corridors it’s really arty and it’s got a nice vibe. I love the satisfaction of learning new skills and working with my hands to have something done at the end of the day. You take it home and go “Look what I’ve made out of a clump of nothing, I’ve made this bowl!” It’s a really nice feeling of achievement.

It’s taken over my life a little bit! I’ve started dreaming about ceramics, where I plan what I want to glaze and what I want to do. The next step will be presents and then I eventually want to sell, I can see myself having a studio at home one day.

I think this is a really nice place to study, there are great teachers, I’d definitely recommend it. The tutors I’ve had are so knowledgeable and there’s so much to learn in this field.I’ve made friends doing the course. Meeting people from completely different walks of life is a really nice plus because normally as a mum I meet a lot of people who are sort of my age with young children.

STUDENT PROFILEPhilip, Accounting student

I chose to study AAT to get into Accounting. It’s a world recognised accounting body and qualification. I started the Level 2 course here and I liked the way it was broken down into manageable assignments. I’ve done Level 2, 3 and 4 here; it’s allowed me to progress all the way through to a professional diploma which will allow me to work in the sector. If you’re thinking about doing an AAT course, I’d say definitely do it. The course is not just about accounting, it covers aspects of business in general - marketing, budgeting and how a company works overall. It’s been really good here at RACC - the tutors are really good, helpful and supportive. It’s a really friendly atmosphere, and the support has been really good. I was nervous before I started back at RACC as it had been twenty years since I had been in school, but I settled in and everyone was really nice and very welcoming.

The crèche is excellent, my child uses it while I am in class and I know she’s safe and happy there which gives me peace of mind to focus on my studies. The college is local to me, but it’s also in a good location, close to the train station with underground and overground trains, and lots of bus routes.

I’d encourage anyone thinking about a language course to do it. The teachers have been excellent and make it really accessible.

I also found that as an adult, I was really nervous about coming, but it was a very friendly class and the teacher made a real effort to include me so I felt very comfortable. I feel like I have really improved!

I starting French classes here because both my daughters are learning French at school so I thought it would be useful to brush up on my grammar.

We also go to France a lot on holiday. I did O levels at school, but didn’t do A levels and really regretted it. I started at RACC on French Level 2 and carried on.

My experience at RACC has been very positive – I really look forward to my Tuesday mornings! I’d encourage anyone to do a course at RACC. If I had more time, I’d do more courses. It’s certainly opened up my appetite for adult learning.

STUDENT PROFILEIain, Jazz enthusiast

When I retired, I signed up to the first Easter Jazz School four years ago. I thoroughly enjoyed the course and found the tutors friendly and really knowledgeable in their field. Julian Costello, one of the tutors, told me about other courses at the college.

I chose my course as it fitted in with my diary, allowing me to pursue my enthusiasm for jazz. I particularly enjoy playing with other musicians of a similar level. Also, the course is a great way of meeting other jazz enthusiasts and sharing our interests. Another benefit I didn’t expect was that it has built up my confidence in my ability to perform in front of an audience and to play in a small jazz group. The college has a wider range of courses compared to other establishments in London and is a great place to come. I would advise trying a variety of courses until you find the right one for your level as there is the opportunity to do this at the college. The classes are very relaxed and the tutoring style is enjoyable, supportive and friendly. I would recommend the college. It’s a good place to meet people you have things in common with. Recently I have also started to do a French Conversation class at the college.
