2. How to use this Guide

This Course Enrolment Guide 2014 provides you with information on when and where the units available for study in this dual degree will be offered in 2014. Enrolling in units for 2014

1. Read Section 3. ‘Program Information’ for information on course structure and unit sequence. Take note of any prerequisite or co-requisite requirements before selecting particular units.

A prerequisite is a requirement that must be met by a student before enrolment in a stipulated unit. It is your responsibility to ensure that you meet the prerequisites for a unit prior to enrolling into that unit.

A co-requisite is a requirement that must be met by having already passed or being concurrently enrolled in an associated unit in order to be able to enrol in the stipulated unit.

If you wish to enrol into a unit for which you have not met the prerequisite or co-requisite requirements, please obtain approval from your Course Coordinator.

IMPORTANT NOTE Failure to enrol or re-enrol before the published due dates for re-enrolment on the ACU website (http://students.acu.edu.au/381148) may result in late fee penalties. Even if you are unsure of what units you need to enrol in, please ensure that you enrol or re-enrol in at least one unit before the due date. CAREER OPPPORTUNITIES In addition to the wide range of careers open to the graduates of the Bachelor of Laws, completing this dual degree is an excellent preparation for careers across Government administration; teaching and staff training; archives, museums and libraries; art institutions; commerce and industry; communications and writing; community and charitable organisations; creative industries; heritage organisations; social research; policy organisations and the tourism and travel industries. REQUIREMENTS TO COMPLETE AWARD - BA/LLB 3.1 Bachelor of Arts / Bachelor of Laws: To qualify for the dual degree, a student must complete 400 cp (40 units each of 10 credit point value) consisting of:

1. 160cp selected in accordance with the requirements for the Bachelor of Arts, consisting of:

a. 80cp from a Bachelor of Arts Major; b. 40cp from a Bachelor of Arts Minor; c. 20cp of University Core Units; and d. 20cp Electives chosen from other units listed in the Schedule of Unit Offerings

for the Bachelor of Arts. 240cp selected in accordance with the requirements for the Bachelor of Laws, consisting of:

a. 230cp from Law Core Units; b. 10cp from unspecified Elective Units; and c. Four 0cp Pro Bono/Legal Professional Experience Units–one unit in the second

3.2 Bachelor of Arts Component You are required to complete an Arts major consisting of eight units. In addition, you will either study an Arts minor (one unit each semester) for four semesters or you will study elective units in each semester. What is an Arts Major and a Minor A Major is a total of 80cp from prescribed units in one discipline or approved interdisciplinary area, normally including at least 10cp at introductory level, at least 40cp at 200 level and at least 20cp from 300 level units. Notice for students who wish to exit from a course of study before completing this dual award: a) if the student wishes to discontinue with the BA/LLB, they cannot exit with the BA or LLB award

alone. They may upon request, receive a letter from the Course Coordinator confirming that they have satisfied the requirements for the relevant single award.

b) If the student does exit and they wish to resume the BA/LLB, they will need to reapply for

admission to the BA/LLB.

4. Additional Law Course Information:

LAW INDUCTION WEEK – LIW

ACU law students are strongly counselled, whether or not they have completed Legal Studies at VCE/HSC, to attend the Law Induction Program that runs from Tuesday 11February 2014 – Thursday 13 February 2014. The LIW is an introduction to the study of law at ACU. It is designed to assist students to acquire the skills and knowledge essential to their studies and the future practice of law. The LIW will consist of a combination of lectures and information sessions, moot court and a range of activities for both students and faculty staff. Faculty will email commencing students with the Law Induction Week’s reading material and program at the beginning of February 2014.

Professional Recognition:

This course has been specifically developed to meet the requirements for admission to practice law. The course has been approved for admission to practice law in Victoria and in New South Wales. Pro Bono Experience:

Students will complete a minimum of 320 hours pro bono experience during the course which will count as credit towards the compulsory LAWS405 Legal Community Engagement unit (10cp) undertaken in the final year. While students are encouraged to volunteer in community organisations from the beginning of their studies, placements under the pro bono program will not commence until students are in their second year of the degree.

5. University Core Curriculum

The Core Curriculum The Australian Catholic University Core Curriculum has been designed to focus on aspects of the University’s identity and mission. The units emphasise critical judgment, clear expression, ethical decision-making and concern for others, as individuals and as a community. The Core is comprised of a total of five units: Two University Core units: All students in the Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Law dual degree are required to complete the following University Core units as part of this program: UNCC100 Our World, Community and Vulnerability UNCC300 Understanding Self and Society: Contemporary Perspectives Two Core Curriculum Program units: These units build explicitly on the University Core units and all students in the Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Law dual degree are required to complete at least two Program Core units from the following list: LAWS109 International Human Rights Law, and LAWS305 Legal Ethics and Professional Responsibility One Community Engagement unit: This unit serves to integrate theory with practice. Business Studies (Major or Minor) The Business Studies sequence offer students the opportunity to gain a broad understanding of the fields of either Human Resource Management or Marketing. Note: Students who commenced a Business Studies non-accredited major or minor in 2013 or prior, must liaise with their Course Co-ordinator regarding progression. Students may take either a major in Economics or a major in Business Studies, but not both. Students intending to teach should ensure that they take 4 units in two of the following: Marketing, Human Resource Management, Accounting. Communication (Minor Only) The Communication sequence is designed to develop students' personal, academic, and vocational communication skills. Drama (Major or Minor) The major or minor sequence in Drama aims to introduce students to the study of plays as texts for performance as well as to the changing conventions and techniques of dramatic presentation. Economics (Major or Minor) The aim of the major or minor sequence in Economics is to promote a knowledge, understanding and appreciation of the scope, content and methodology of mainstream, neo-classical economics in particular. Geography (Elective Only) The world today is more interconnected than ever before. Geography promotes an enhanced appreciation and understanding of the global environment and community. The Earth is confronted with significant issues of climate change and associated sea level change. These have significant implications for water supplies in agriculture and urban communities. Storm activity is likely to be more frequent and more intensity. How will natural ecosystems and humankind adapt to these changes?

The study of geography will not provide you with all these answers but it will give you a better understanding of the processes that have contributed to these scenarios and an indication of how humankind can manage these events. Healthy Development (Minor Only) This sequence introduces students to the fundamentals of healthy development. It will enable Bachelor of Teaching/Bachelor of Arts (Mathematics) and Bachelor of Teaching/Bachelor of Arts (Humanities) students who complete appropriate curriculum studies to teach Health and Human Development in Victorian secondary schools. History (Major or Minor) The History sequence aims to introduce students to the nature of historical thinking and to develop skills in the analysis, synthesis and understanding of evidence in order to study how historians interpret and write about the past. Literature (Major or Minor) The Literature major or minor sequence aims to provide students with a detailed knowledge of a range of literary texts drawn from a variety of genres and an awareness of current critical approaches. Mathematics (Major or Minor) The units that comprise the major or minor sequence in Mathematics have been designed to provide an in-depth study of mathematics appropriate for those intending to be secondary teachers of mathematics, or for those graduates who seek a career in another field which draws upon mathematical thought. Media (Major or Minor) The Media sequence is designed to introduce students to studies in both processes and products in the electronic and print media and to the theories underpinning their roles in society. Music (Major or Minor) The Music major or minor sequence is designed for students who have completed approved Year 12 studies in music, Australian Music Examination Board or Trinity College London Grade 6 Practical or Grade 5 Theory of Music, or equivalent, and for students who lack such a background. Philosophy (Major or Minor) The sequence in Philosophy is designed to introduce students to the main areas of the discipline through a study of the ideas and arguments of some of the key figures in the history of Western thought, and through a consideration of the relevance of those ideas and arguments to contemporary philosophical debates. Politics (Major or Minor) Politics is an enquiry into the decision-making process: how particular societies and persons develop structures and arrangements to resolve the problems of conflict, resource allocation and culture. Psychology (Major or Minor) The Psychology sequence provides students with a comprehensive and systematic study of human behaviour. The non-accredited major in the Bachelor of Arts (Pass) is fully specified for students commencing in 2014. Students must undertake the following eight units: PSYC100, PSYC101, PSYC104, PSYC200, PSYC212, PSYC213, PSYC313 Social Psychology and PSYC315 Brain and Behaviour. Students enrolled in the Bachelor of Arts (Pass) undertaking a Psychology minor must undertake PSYC100, PSYC101, PSYC200 and PSYC212. Note: Students who commenced a Psychology non-accredited major in 2013 or prior, must complete PSYC100, PSYC101, PSYC104 plus any five psychology units at Level 200 or Level 300. Sociology (Major or Minor) Sociology is concerned with critically analysing the institutions and ways of life that constitute modern societies.

Study of Religions (Major or Minor) The sequence in Study of Religions enables student to undertake a major or minor in units concerned with the diversity of religious experience and expression in different belief systems and interfaith relations and dialogue. Theological Studies (Major or Minor) The sequence in Theological Studies enables students undertaking the general Bachelor of Arts degree to follow a major or minor sequence consisting of a variety of units from the theological disciplines. Visual Arts (Major or Minor) Visual Arts is offered as a major or minor sequence in the BA course. BA students must choose two of the three streams of 2D studies, 3D studies and Art and Design History and Theory if they are majoring in Visual Arts and one of these if they are minoring. 2D and 3D studies involve practical experiences in studio production. Youth Work (Minor only) Students in the Bachelor of Social Science and Bachelor of Arts (Melbourne) may complete a minor study sequence in Youth Work. 6.2 ARTS UNITS OFFERED (Note Amendments may be made to unit availability depending on student demand.)
