ENGLISH I: SURVEY OF LITERATURE DESCRIPTION: The purpose of this course is to provide integrated educational experiences in the language arts strands of reading, writing, listening, viewing, speaking, language, and literature. Students will use reading strategies to construct meaning from informative, technical, and literary texts; acquire an extensive vocabulary through reading, discussion, listening, and systematic word study; use process writing strategies, student inquiry, and self-monitoring techniques; and use speaking, listening, and viewing strategies in formal presentations and informal discussions. The course is presented in two semesters. Semester 1 consists of four units that include The House on Mango Street and Romeo and Juliet. Semester 2 consists of four units that include Anthem and The Alchemist. CREDITS: .05 Credit for each semester PREREQUISITES: Prerequisites are determined by student performance in prior school year.
