Tonight (August 13) is the Main Street Parade beginning at 7 p.m. The Leo & May Rice Memorial dedication will fol- low at 8:30, and don’t forget Family Night at the Carnival ($1 rides) and the Street Dance at the Sidetrack Bar. The first night of the Pro Rodeo (Au- gust 14) is also Family Night. Friday night is “Tough Enough to Wear Pink” and the Saturday Rodeo is the 4-H Buy- ers Appreciation Night. The rodeo begins at 8:00 p.m. each evening, but there are lots of other things going on. So, come early, stay late. On Saturday morning at 10:00 a.m. there will be a special rodeo for special children. The Rocky Mountain Excepio- nal Rodeo introduces handicapped chil- dren to rodeo, and allows them to com- pete in their own rodeo with their own rodeo buddy to help them through the events. On Sunday, August 16th, come sup- port the Caring Cowboys Calf Roping at 1:00 p.m. Caring Cowboys is non-profit group dedicated to preserving the West- continued on page 8..... The Courier ern Lifestyle by conducting charitable ac- tivities and supporting local agricultrual charities, events, and people. The 4H and FFA Master Showman- ship Contest will be held on Friday, Au- gust 15th, at 9 a.m. and the small animal Showmanship Contest will be held in the afternoon (1 p.m.). The Market Animal Sale will be Saturday morning at 9 a.m. and the Parade of Champions will take place at the evening rodeo. Gooding County Fair & Rodeo RELAY FOR LIFE The goal of 2014 Good- ing Relay For Life was lofty $40,000. On June 13th, 22 teams walk laps and 266 people signed up for a total amount of $40,445. Teams held fundrais- ing bake sales, yard sales, a Bowl—A—Thon, a golf tournament, and a Poker Run that drew in 55 cars and motorcycles. Along with the food booths at the various events, and just asking family and friends for donations, the goal was fully met. Along with individual contributions, there were numerous businesses that helped the couse, includ- ing two local businesses that contributed over $1500. 24 businesses do- nated each $500, and 30 businesses and individuals donated $250 each. Relay For Life Chairper- son, Susan Bolton said, “It takes EVERYONE to make this a success- ful event and we want to THANK EVERYONE for the help and support that was given.” Mrs. Bolton added a special thank you the Team Captains and team participants. “They are the ones that did the real foot work for this event.” Braving the Bindweed Jungle Last episode, Joe put the final nail in Leafy Spurge’s coffin. This week Joe takes on a low- lying serial killer who chokes the life out of anything that opposes her. This femme fatale lurks on the periphery of native grasslands and when darkness falls, she strikes. Joe knew that understanding the nu- ances of bindweed was the key to subdu- ing this shifty predator. Field bindweed is a creeping perennial vine native to Eurasia. It can grow from 0.3 to 2 m in length and often forms dense infestations consisting of one or more clones. Leaves are round to arrow-shaped 2.5 to 5.7 cm long and alternate along a prostrate stem. Flowering occurs in the mid-summer, when white to pale pink, funnel-shaped flowers develop and continues into early fall. Flowers are typically 1.9 to 2.5 cm The Adventures of Joe Sabin Part 4 Volume 38 ~ Number 33 News from the Heart of Idaho Camas • Lincoln • Gooding CourierNews.webs.com ,2014 August 13 NEWS
