She has completed advanced training in the USA in both 2007 & 2012 including the Protecting Children Online Certificate from Fox Valley Technical College and has successfully completed the ‘University Certificate in Child Safety on the Internet’ from the University of Central Lancashire, United Kingdom. She works closely with the main social media sites of Facebook, Instagram and Twitter and also with Google, and is regularly consulted by these organisations for input into their impact on Australian children especially in relation to safety and reporting.

She is a sought-after advisor to schools, providing crisis management, policy development and confidential advice to Principals. Abstract: Susan will address the issue of Cybersafety & young people for Principals & those with a School Leadership role. With the explosion of technology, we are also seeing a dramatic rise in its misuse. Cyber bullying & ‘sexting’ are emerging as the number one issue confronting the safety and wellbeing of young people and the wider community.

Mao’s Last Dancer – Li’s Inspirational JourneyLi CunxinFormer ballet dancer and stockbroker and currently the Artistic Director of the Queensland Ballet

Li Cunxin’s journey is simply remarkable. He was born into utter poverty in Mao’s Communist China and at a very young age was selected to train at Madame Mao’s Beijing Dance Academy. So began Li’s journey. The 7 years of harsh training regime at the Beijing Dance Academy taught him discipline, resilience, determination and perseverance. Li’s outstanding drive and relentless work made him one of the best dancers in the world.

Li then made a successful career transition from ballet into finance. He was a senior manager at one of the largest stockbroking firms in Australia. Li served on the boards of the Bionics Institute and The Australian Ballet, and was Councillor of the Australian Council for the Arts. He was awarded a Doctorate by the Australian Catholic University for his contribution in Dance and Literature and he was named 2009 Australian Father of the Year. In 2014 Li was awarded Queensland Australian of the Year. Li is currently the Artistic Director of Queensland Ballet.

The inspirational story of Li’s life is recounted in his memoir Mao’s Last Dancer, which quickly rose to number one on the Australian bestseller list and won Book of the Year Award in Australia and received Christopher Award for literature in the USA. It went on to become an international bestseller and is now in its 52nd print. Mao’s Last Dancer is also a block-buster film.

The Epitome of Courage: A Structured Conversation with the ChairAlan Border

Allan Border, AO is a former Australian Cricket Captain. His playing nickname was “A.B.”. He played 156 Test matches in his career, a record until it was passed by fellow Australian Steve Waugh. Border still retains the world record for the number of consecutive Test appearances of 153 and the number of Tests as Captain. He was primarily a left hand batsman but also achieved sporadic success as a part time left arm orthodox spinner. Border amassed 11,174 Test runs (a world record until it was passed by Brian Lara in 2005). He hit 27 centuries in his Test career. He retired as Australia’s most capped player and leading run-scorer in both Tests and One Day Internationals. His Australian record for Test Match runs stood for 15 years before Ricky Ponting overtook him during the Third Ashes Test against England in July 2009. Border was one of the 55 inaugural inductees of the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame and in 2000 was inducted into the Australian Cricket Hall of Fame.

KEYNOTE 4 KEYNOTE 5The Moral Purpose of Courageous Leadership Dr Jan RobertsonSenior Researcher, Institute of Professional Learning University of Waikato

Jan is a photographer, an author, a kayak fisher, a mother, an international leadership consultant, a senior researcher for the Institute of Professional Learning at the University of Waikato, an Adjunct Professor at Griffiths University, and the Academic Director of the New Zealand Aspiring Principals’ Programme.

Abstract: Although leaders tell me they know the importance of moral purpose in education, my research and development work with aspiring principals has indicated that leaders seldom have the conversations with teachers about moral purpose, nor talk to them about their own. Leaders’ agency and efficacy, along with clarity of their moral purpose, can lead them to the courageous leadership that is needed today to address the inequities currently experienced in our education communities.

KEYNOTE 6 KEYNOTE 7Courageous Leadership for Disruptive TimesGlen Gerreyn CSPDirector, The HopeFull Organisation

Glen Gerreyn will help change your life. For the past twelve years Glen has made speaking and writing his career. Collectively he has spoken to over 500,000 people around the world. He works with children and parents, high school students, employees and business leaders, sporting groups and community organisations. In 2012 he received international accreditation as a Certified Speaking Professional (CSP). He’s spoken at world famous TEDx events, appeared on the Today Show and Can of Worms, ABC National radio, and written blogs for mamamia.com. He’s written four books — Gifted for Greatness, Men of Honour, Oxygen 102, Get Your Hopes Up. Glen lives in Sydney with his wife and four children.

Abstract: Leaders are dealers in hope. Hope is the ability to face the facts that are against you, while keeping faith in the vision that is in you. We naturally mimic the expressions and moods of the people around us with studies showing it only takes one person with a negative or positive mood to infect or affect the rest of the group. The result of this is even more prominent for leaders who, because of their position of influence, can alter an atmosphere in as little as seven minutes. Like an uncovered sneeze can penetrate the health of those next to you, in less than 420 seconds the mood of any leader is just as contagious to their team, employees, students or children. How is your mood, persona or attitudes influencing the courage in the rooms you walk into and the outcomes for those in your reach? This seminar helps all leaders manage their emotional wellbeing and create a climate where both students and teachers can flourish.

Boy’s Education and Leadership in the Digital Age Ian LillicoExecutive Director & Founder, Boys Forward Institute

Ian is a former High School Principal and consultant in gender and middle schooling throughout Australia and internationally. He has done action research throughout Australia and New Zealand from 1992 and in the Northern Hemisphere during his Churchill Fellowship in 2000. He is a National Fellow of The Australian Council of Educational Leaders (ACEL) and was the 2006 National Travelling Scholar. Ian works at Edith Cowan University (Perth).

Abstract: This keynote will cover contemporary ways of engaging boys (in the presence of girls) and improving their outcomes in school. Ian will deal with the issue of leadership and resilience for boys and provide participants with a number of practical strategies and ideas to use in schools and classrooms. Ian will look at learning styles in the information age and the role that digital education and E-learning will play in transforming traditional classrooms. Ian will discuss the leadership needed by administrators to bring about these changes and the ways that boys have adapted their learning and lifestyles.

Entertainer, Media Personality and LawyerJames O’Loghlin

James became a commercial lawyer in 1991 and soon after realised that he had made a terrible mistake. He then became a stand-up comedian and a criminal lawyer. Through the 90’s he was a lawyer by day and comedian by night, whilst also juggling television appearances on Good News Week, Hey, Hey It’s Saturday, and more, whilst also working as a writer for Andrew Denton on his Triple M breakfast show, and at the Logies. In 1998 he performed Lawyer, Lawyer, to full houses at the Melbourne Comedy Festival.

It was this role that fuelled James’ interest in innovation, a subject he will speak on at the Conference Dinner when he will also share his abundant talents as our MC.

A1Courageous LeadershipIan Lillico, Executive Director & Founder, Boys Forward Institute

This facilitated workshop will extract from participants their notions of contemporary educational courage on a variety of topics including technology, staff management and performance, curriculum, student wellbeing and moving schools forward. Ian will discuss the notion of leadership versus management and present some scenarios for participants to discuss. The whole session will be interactive, very engaging and useful.

A2Courageous Leadership? No way! I was Brave, Passionate, Stupid, Naive, Wishful and Female! Susan McLean, Director, Cyber Safety Solutions

“You’re blonde and female. Not much going for you is there?” and with that comment delivered by my jealous male superior, I could feel my dreams of establishing a cybersafety unit within Victoria Police quashed in the most sensational manner. I had fought hard to get to that point, had survived 25 years in a male dominated occupation and all the associated discrimination that came with it, yet at that moment, I wondered if it was all worth it. Should I just give up now? Forget all about cybersafety? Forget about the vulnerable children? Of course not. I was not a quitter, so how did I get from conscientious student to an international leader in cybersafety and young people? From being the only girl in my Year 10 Chemistry Class, the first female Police Officer appointed to the Eltham Police Station, the first Victorian Police officer appointed to a position involving cybersafety and young people and the establishment of the leading Cybersafety Consultancy in Australia, I have lead both unintentionally and intentionally. This session, based on my personal journey, will look at the many and varied definitions of courage in leadership.

A3The Leadership EffectGlen Gerreyn, Director, The HopeFull Organisation

Whilst some of us possess inbuilt leadership traits, we can all, and should all, learn to be better leaders so we can positively impact the world around us. All students have the potential to make their mark and better the lives of others but many don’t know how. The Leadership Effect explores how to draw out the inherent and learned leadership abilities of young people, thereby inspiring action and social change.

A4Coaching Courageous Leadership Through a Focus on Moral Purpose Jan Robertson, Senior Researcher, Institute of Professional Learning University of Waikato, NZ

This participatory workshop will focus on the importance of our own moral purpose in leadership, and how, as leaders, we can then have courageous conversations about moral purpose, asking the hard questions that lead to changes in teachers’ practice and a difference to student learning outcomes. Coaching moral purpose is the key to leaders becoming systems leaders and developing shared accountability for the quality of education.
