the $43 billion inrastructure
investment, and gathered
signatures on the Petition.
Locals were particularly
interested in the benets or
small business and the health
system rom the NBN.
Therese Schier, who runs the
local Casino Community website,
www.casino.nsw.au was on hand
to endorse the Campaign, and
sign the Petition.

at Country Field Days.
The Support the NBN
Campaign has received strong
support rom communities
around the State. It shows the
importance o this Rudd Labor
Government’s initiative or ourcountry communities. The Rudd
Government has now announced
that Broken Hill will be one o
the initial priority locations or
the ast-track rollout o the NBN.

The CLPG visited the Manildra starch
and ethanol plant at Bomaderry,
where they met with Chairman Dick
Honan, beore touring the plant and
talking to local workers.
Members also visited the
Shoalhaven Paper Mill at Bomaderry.
This was a valuable opportunity to
hear about their latest innovation,
the new 100% carbon neutral paper,
as well as to view the latest security
papers, such as the NSW LandsLand Title papers as they rolled
rom the presses.
The CLPG toured the new
$151 million gaol being built at
South Nowra, which has been
expanded to oer 600 beds.

Members heard about how the gaol
was providing valuable investment
to the South Coast. Two-thirds
o the contractors being used on
the project are rom the local area,
supporting local jobs during the
global nancial crisis.
Kiama SEC organised a successul
undraising dinner in Berry, showing
the Members o the CLPG some
antastic South Coast hospitality.
A great night was had by all.

eorts in organising the evening.

The project will deliver an
estimated 700 jobs to the Broken
Hill area during the ve-year
construction period, with 120
jobs or the on-going operation
o the wind arm. The $2.2 billion
project will involve the construction
o up to 598 turbines and has thepotential to supply electricity to
up to 3 States.
A single wind turbine will generate
enough power or up to 732
homes per year. This is the
equivalent o taking approximately
1,170 cars o the road annually.
Minister or Planning, Kristina
Keneally has given approval or
another, smaller wind arm at
g ra, a gb.
The $250 million project will
generate around 150 construction
jobs, 15 ongoing jobs and up to
$90 million or the local economy.
The planning approval was given
ater extensive consultationwith the local community, which
reduced the number o turbines
rom 84 to 73.

Bellinger River Branch held a successul Italian luncheon or local supporters
to raise unds or the upcoming Federal Election campaign, creating a
‘Mediterranean oasis’ in the middle o the Bellingen Valley.

The Guest Speaker was MelissaParke MP, Federal Member or
Fremantle. Ms Parke’s address
ocussed on her experiences
beore she was elected to the
Federal Parliament in 2007, when
she was a Senior Lawyer with the
United Nations or eight years,
including time in Kosovo, Gaza,
Beirut, Cyprus and New York. Ms
Parke thoroughly impressed the
audience with her speech, and hercommitment to Labor principles.
The Louisa Lawson Memorial
Address is held every our years.
It is to honour Louisa Lawson,
(1848-1920), the mother o the
amous author Henry Lawson, a
lielong eminist, and who has been
called “The Mother o Surage in
NSW”. In 1888, Louisa Lawson
established and subsequently
ran The Dawn, Australia’s rst
journal produced solely by woman.
Produced monthly, it eatured
articles rom a strong eminist
perspective or ten years.
Congratulations to Alex Lithgow
and the Gulgong Branch or all
their work in organising such a
successul dinner.
