The community spirit of Waipu is alive and well and evident in the work being put in by volunteers in pre-paring the base for the new Waipu Celtic Barn in the Caledonian Park. I called in with my camera last Friday morning (4 April) and the scene was really something: trucks coming and going, tipping out metal and load-ing up with peat, diggers excavating, loading the trucks and moving the metal around, a roller compressing the metal. Trucks, diggers and the roller had all been sup-plied free of charge. Saorsa residents Brian Challenger worked at unearthing cables with a pick and shovel and Robert Webb, a retired electrician and another Saor-sa resident, was relocating an electric switchboard. A team of women had just served morning tea with homemade sandwiches and cakes. In the thick of it all, Richie Guy, Chairman of the Joint Venture Trust was behind the wheel of a roller. Speaking at the fundraising Waipu Joint Venture Vari-ety Blast held the following evening, Richie comment-ed on how much easier it is to get a job like this done with modern machinery. He calculated using horses and drays, it would have taken our forebears almost a year to complete the work that was done in a sin-gle week. From tales of the past of working bees or “frolics” held to tidy the cemetery and hay making par-ties on farms and the evidence of the assets the town enjoys: the Waihoihoi Park, the Caledonian Park, the Surf Club, the Rugby and Squash Club etc. the won-derful Waipu primary school, the town has always had a strong community spirit. Some things change but some things remain the same. At the risk of getting a bit boring on the subject of cars on beaches, I came across something while read-ing through the Whangarei District Assessment on the application b the Uphof Investment Trust to operate a small cheese making factory off Cove Rd., Waipu.

Under the title “Amenity and character”, the reporting

a car park with spaces for 20 cars “represents a change from a natural and rural view to one that has more ur-ban connotations” and “will create adverse effects that are more than minor with regard to the general amenity and character of the localized environment.”I wonder what this planner would think of the sight of

-tened dune off Peter Snell Rd., Ruakaka. I wish more people would jump up and down about the damage to the “amenity value” of our most precious asset, our beach all these cars are causing. I wish Lisa and Anthony Uphof good luck with their application to open an artisan cheese factory in Waipu. I really like their idea of using locally produced milk and adding value, while offering a few extra jobs and training opportunities to local people. What a great op-portunity for some lucky person to train as a master cheese maker! How wonderful to be able to buy Waipu cheese! I am sure the milk from jersey cows grazed on

cheese.

Cost of Celtic Barn increases by $350,000

Richie Guy, Chairman of the Joint Ven-ture group, which is behind the project, told the gathered guests at the ceremony held on Friday28 March, that while the Joint Venture Group has only been in-volved for the past two years, the Celt-ic Barn had been “10 – 12 years in the planning.” Richie said the Waipu community had

raised $480,000 for this project.“This is a tremendous effort by this community. We are very, very grateful.” A further $515,000 had been grant-ed by the Lotteries Board and the Whangarei District Council had contributed $600,000, $80,000 of which is earmarked for the refur-bishment of the Coronation Hall. But there was some bad news. Twelve months ago a quanti-ty surveyor had estimated the cost of building the Celtic Barn as $1,550,000 but now, “with-

the price (estimated by the same quantity surveyor) had shot up to $1,900,000, leaving a shortfall of $385,000. This increase is mostly due to rises in the cost of builging materials Richie explained, “We are current-ly working on reducing the cost as much as possible. We are progressing with the base while the ground is dry and subject to brining the costs to a manageable

foreign locations bring with them potential diseas-es especially in faecal wastes. The individual(s) may not be themselves affected by a pathogen since they may be a carrier or may have had an infection without obvious signs and symptoms. Since foreign vessels, particularly yachts and other small craft, may dump their sewage in the nearshore ocean or harbour before they enter a marina, it seems to me that this poses a serious threat. Rubbish from shipping alarming

As we are farming at Maungakaramea, in the beautiful interior of Bream Bay, one of my chief delights after a hard days work is coming down to Waipu or Ruakaka to swim in the sea, see native wildlife and good mates. We have a working dog (my husband is a professional hunter) who also loves a swim in the foaming brine and a prance on the sand. But, even though Molly is trained to protect native spe-cies and kill feral pests (having just successfully re sat her Kiwi aversion training) I don’t take her to the Ruakaka wildlife refuge or any area where their is a ban on dogs. This would set a poor example to others, including

important training (available free of charge from the Department of Conservation). In my view, not being able to exercise our dogs on beaches that contain rare endangered species, struggling to breed in the face of multiple disturbances, is an excellent policy and should be consistently respected.I ask those with beloved pets needing a beach outing

WDC and local groups in protecting beautiful shore-

birds like northern NZ dotterel. After all, there are ex-ercise areas on beaches only a few minutes drive (or a pleasant walk!) away. Our thanks to everyone working together in the communi-ty to protect important feeding and roosting sites for birds. Great job Bream Bay Coastal Care group and Marsden Playcentre children for your recent beach cleanup! Here in Maungakaramea, our Landcare group mem-bers and others continue to work hard to eradicate/ suppress pest plant species (moth plant and climbing asparagus are some of the worst!) and feral pests, in order to provide safe habitat for native species. You should see the hilarious antics of kaka, raucously screeching, hanging upside down out of trees or build-

Head Scenic Reserve and off shore islands, squads of kaka come out to Maungakaramea to feed, play and have a good time. We are keen to have kaka breed here, ramping up our trapping regime for possums, mustelids and other predators, to ensure kaka are safe. Life is better with native birds around us!

in the Whangarei District, from a reading of the Council webpage on the subject, it sounds as though, it is tolerated. The webpage states, “Travellers using either campervans without liquid waste containment or tents should, wherever possible, stay in licensed camping grounds where toilet facilities are available.“Camping is generally not permitted in reserves and other public places. If this is not possible, we ask that travellers stay near public toilets and take all their rubbish away with them.”Mike Henehan by-law co-ordinator for the WDC said the Council would be reviewing the content on the webpage. “For example, we need to clarify that pitching tents on Council reserves is not permitted.” Asked if he considered regular and sometimes numerous freedom campers at Ruakaka a problem, Mr. Henehan replied, “In the last month we have received reports of people camping in tents and campervans that are not self contained in the Ruakaka area. When advised of these issues our enforcement staff will follow up. We are also conducting proactive patrols in this area for any offending. It is too early at this stage to say there is a problem but we will continue to monitor and assess.”

a number of years ago out of concerns for the safety of pedestrians using the road. The Waipu Residents and Ratepayers Association has pointed out to the Whangarei District Council many times how dangerous the remaining length of road with its blind corners is, particularly during the summer holiday period when it becomes very busy. The soon to be completed footpath will also give walkers who take the Waipu Cove to Langs coastal trail a safe means of returning to the cove to retrieve their vehicles. WDC roading engineer, Greg Monteith, said that the completion of the path to Langs has been on the Council’s agenda for some time but had been held up by budget constraints. A small digger is at work cutting out a path to a width of 1.5 metres and gravel is being laid on the surface. Mr. Monteith said the budget for the project is $30,000.Work is expected to be completed by Easter.

The Whangarei District Council is considering a proposal by the Uphof Investment Trust to operate a cheese-making factory along with a deli shop and café capable of seating 40 people in a barn off Cove Rd. between Waipu Cove and Langs Beach. The proposal is being viewed with alarm by some of the neighbours who are con-cerned about the scale of the operation, what will happen to the waste bi product

bours being sent notices advising of the application. A letter raising the above concerns was sent anonymously along with a copy of the application to the Bream Bay News last week so your reporter made contact with Lisa and Anthony Uphof and went to visit them on their Cove Rd., property. The Uphofs say theirs will be a small-scale artisan cheese making operation fully contained in a large barn already on the property. On each of the three days a week they plan to make cheese, a single small truck will be all that is needed to deliver the 480litres of milk they will require. The whey – the left over product from cheese making - will either be reused in cheeses or transported off the property. The application includes a request to hold occasional functions, which Lisa ex-plained might be cheese making workshops. Anthony said from time to time they would like to be able to host potential customers at cheese and wine tasting events in the evenings. The Uphofs say these would be held no more than twice in any week during the busy summer season and much less frequently for the rest of the year. They also plan to install a commercial kitchen, primarily to make breads and crack-ers that go well with their cheeses and they would like to sell other high quality Northland products in the cheese shop. Anthony has been studying cheese making for the past year and hopes later this

Conjunctivitis is a common condition which can be encountered all year round. It is not just associated with spring and the hay fever season, but can also be seen in the colder winter months accompanying head colds and infections. The symptoms of conjunctivitis include red irritated eyes that may feel gritty, sore and uncomfortable. They can also be itchy, sticky and weepy. Conjunctivitis is

the white of the eye and inside the eyelids. When you visit your pharmacy with these symptoms your Self Care pharmacist will ask questions to determine the cause of the conjunctivitis and will give you advice about which eye drops are most suitable for you. Causes of conjunctivitis can be divided into 3 groups as follows: 1) infection 2) allergy 3) irritant.1) Infections can be caused by bacteria or viruses. These infections can be very contagious. Special care needs to be taken not to spread the infection to the other eye and to other people. The infection should clear within a week when left untreated. However the need for antibiotics for bacterial infections should be considered in certain circumstances, to prevent complications or toprevent the spread of infection to other people. The antibiotic Chloramphenicol is available from your Self Care Pharmacist and they can advise if this would be the most appropriate treatment for you.2) Allergic conjunctivitis may be due to seasonal triggers such as pollens or may be from other elements that are around all year round such as house dust or pet fur. Antihistamine eye drops are useful in the treatment of allergic conjunctivitis for itchy and irritated red eyes as are oral antihistamines. It is a good idea to try to avoid the cause of an allergy as much as possible.3) Irritant or chemical conjunctivitis can have a mechanical or chemical cause, such as foreign objects or chlorine from the swimming pool. This type of conjunctivitis usually clears when the cause is removed. If there is pain in your eye, or if your vision is affected, or your eyes are more sensitive to light than usual then your optometrist or doctor needs to be consulted. Other situations where your optometrist or doctor need to be consulted are for children under two years of age, contact lens wearers who have a greater risk of serious eye infections and if symptoms do not improve with treatment or worsen after a few days.Tips for general eye care for conjunctivitis include:

A memorial seat for Derek Jobbitt has been placed at the back of the dunes at Ru-akaka Beach. Mr. Jobbitt and his family lived in Ruakaka for 20 years prior to 1987 and, as a member of the Ruakaka Beach Improvement Societytree underneath which the seat is set. “He used to always say, ‘That’s my tree’, said his widow Olwyn. “When he died last year he didn’t want a funeral but I decided to do this. Members of our family holiday here in Ruakaka and it will be something for the grandchildren and maybe even the great-grandchildren. They are more likely to visit this than a plaque in a cemetery and a seat is a useful thing for other people as well.” Inscribed on the metal plaque on the seat are the words, “In memory of Derek Job-bitt 1943 – 2013. A special place he loved.”

Olwyn explained, “Derek was a bit of an eco warrior. He used to grow all these swan plants in our garden. They grew huge and he wouldn’t let me pull them out.

It’s business as usual at the Bream Bay Club in Princes Rd., Ruakaka. The building housing the club is in the process of being sold with settlement date due at the end of this month. The club is negotiating a lease arrangement with the new owner, who lives in Auckland. It will continue to open seven days a week from 1pm and 2pm on Sunday. Closing times vary according to how many people are present but, in general, the doors close at 8pm. Club President Norrie Kelleway said the sale will allow the club to pay its debtors. An Annual General Meeting is due to be held on Sunday 18 May at 10.30am in the clubrooms. Nomination forms for members of the executive and committee are available on the club notice board. The Bream Bay Club became an incorporated society in 1971. Earlier than this it had operated on an informal basis in a garage near the Ruakaka Tavern.
