It’s interesting how tough economic times have actually brought some new developments to Bream Bay. The Carters mill in Whangarei is sending more timber through our port because closure of two mills in the middle of the North Island, has resulted in increased production there. Northpine is retrenching at its Silverdale processing plant and bringing most of its timber processing operation to Waipu to make

Development Ltd. has built a new shopping complex at Marsden Cove to try to attract more sales of residential sections there. On the other hand the Northland Steel Products factory in Waipu has laid off staff, Goldpine has decided to put its planned roundwood production plant on hold for the time being and there haven’t been many situations vacant adverts in the Bream Bay News lately. hope things pick up in the New Year.Someone gave me the Season’s greeting the other day – May all your news next year be good news. I replied that I supposed it would be the usual mixture of good and bad. Does anybody believe news when it is all good? I have known a few people who were very nearly saints. Thankfully they all had some small human failings. Most people, events, developments are mixture of good and not so good. That’s what makes it

all endlessly interesting. On Saturday morning I went down to the opening of the new shopping complex at Marsden Cove. I had to admit that with the sun shining, the water sparkling and lots of upbeat people around it was a pleasant place to be. I might even take some of my Christmas visitors down to the café there for a coffee. On Sunday morning I spent a couple of hours at a working bee with the Coastal Care Trust in the dune land alongside Paradise Shores in Ruakaka. Two helicopters

the cannon to announce the opening of the new shopping complex at the Marsden Cove Marina on Saturday 20 December. Speaking at the opening ceremony Leigh Hopper, Managing Director of Hoppers Developments Ltd., said building a retail centre before lots of houses were built at a development was a bit “back to front.” However because of the slow real estate market his company had decided to build the shopping complex in the hope it would help to generate site sales. Mr. Hopper said, the 12 shop complex “is not large” and had cost “about 3 million” and had been “future proofed” as more shop space could be added at the back and /or another storey could be built on top. He said this was “the best example I have ever experienced of building anything in New Zealand.

Perhaps not all readers realise that now and for the next four months is the breeding season for our shore birds, especially in the Ruakaka and Waipu estuaries. These two areas are designated Wildlife Refuges and

dogs, no horses, and no vehicles! It’s also the time when summer migrants such as

all the way from Siberia and Alaska! Apparently some beach users are not aware that in a refuge the beach is no longer a highway! It doesn’t matter whether the tide is in or our or where the high water mark may happen to be, the space within the boundaries of the refuge is protected. So please everyone do keep to the rules and understand that it is impractical to fence off the entire refuge. Obviously birds cannot read so they will nest where they will. Remember they and their chicks have to come down to the water’s edge to feed.Already we have lost several nests as a result of disturbance and, seemingly, a pair of oystercatchers and their chicks were bowled on Ruakaka Beach the other week. Sadly fairy terns are on the brink of extinction and it may not be long before the New Zealand Dotterel joins this list. Even the once ubiquitous oystercatcher is declining in numbers. Is it too much to ask that with so much beach and dunes in Bream Bay and beyond for everyone to enjoy, we reserve just a little space for our birds to

feed roost and rear their young in peace. After all nobody needs to disturb them. Find somewhere else to walk or play. Remember extinction is forever.

piling up in the drain which runs in front of his home. “I have complained to the council often enough about that drain but if it wasn’t there, I think the logs would have come right into the house.”Gavin said he was sitting in his lounge having his morning cup of coffee at around 5.40am when he heard skidding and a loud crash as the truck trailer went over on its

noise kept going for quite a while as the trailer was dragged along the road.”Gavin’s father Alan had spent the previous day painting the fence. “He was out there working on it until about 5.30pm”, said Gavin. But he isn’t angry about the incident. “It was just a freak accident. The trailer went out of control.” Gavin said not just log trucks but metal and bulk haulage trucks are driving up and down Marsden Point Rd. all hours of the day and night to avoid long hold ups at the construction site of the new One Tree Point Rd. /SH1 roundabout. “While they sit at the roundabout it eats into their driving hours. I don’t blame them. I would be doing the same thing.”Gavin said representatives from the trucking company involved, Rotorua Log Haulage Ltd. were very apologetic and the driver was also apologetic. “They were really good about it. They had it cleaned up pretty quickly and they have said they will send a digger round to put the garden back to rights. They might even make some improvements.”

Police are installing a new weighbridge on the Port Marsden Highway. This will allow checking of vehicles coming in and out of the port and will be a step forward in ensuring all heavy motor vehicle safety compliances are met in our area. The station will be built in the next few months.

New weigh bridge on Port Marsden Highway Local Police targeted drunk drivers last Friday night the 5th December, with a

numbers of vehicle stops made in the Ruakaka and Waipu township area. I am very happy to report that no driver was over the limit, and I am hoping it is a sign that our community residents are acting sensibly when making decisions about driving after having a few drinks. However, the overall number of monthly apprehensions of drunk drivers in Bream Bay remains high, with many of the drivers caught being twice over the legal limit. Targeting will continue, including using covert patrols, as we are dedicated to removing drunk drivers from our local roads.

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

He mihi nui kia koutou katoa

Merry Christmas to all of our readers from Bream Bay College. We truly live in paradise and the College is lucky to be in the centre of such a supportive community of talented individuals. The achievements of our students are outstanding and a credit to all those that have helped them on their journeys. We look forward to another excellent year in 2009.

It has been a diffi cult year in the College with staff sickness. Key staff have been away for signifi cant amounts of time due to illness. We hope 2009 will not present the same issues.

The College wishes to pay tribute to Karen McCully who passed away on Friday 5th of December. Karen was a teacher of Science and Maths at the College for the last 6 years. Her input to the College has been signifi cant and she was well respected by the students and staff. She has maintained an active community interest and was a strong supporter of the environment. Karen will be missed by all those who came in contact with her. Our deepest sympathy goes to her family.

ELECTIVES

The Elective programme was a great success for the bulk of students. The issue of non attendance of students who did not choose to go on an Elective has caused some concern. We will look at the timing of the issue of Electives information and when money is due to be paid for next year.

COMMUNITY SERVICES DAY

The Community Services Day proved to be a great success. Our students are to be commended for giving of their time freely and the way in which they got stuck in and made things happen. The local environment is very special and looking after it is important to all of our community. Thank you to the members of the community who also gave up their time to organise and assist

COCKLE SURVEYS8Watl and 8Toir spent their Community Service day assisting the local Iwi (Patuharakeke at Takahiwai) carrying out cockle surveys a Takahiwai beach. This is part of an initiative that supports the health of waterways and the harbour for future generations. Cockles were counted and measured for size on transect lines and recorded for comparisons which are made at 6 weekly intervals. This was the fi rst time that students took

part in this activity. This interesting day was enjoyed by all who attended.

COMMUNITY SERVICE DAY NEWSLETTER REPORT

Monday 8 December was Community Services Day and groups of students took part in community projects. The day was fi ne and warm and students came suitably clad to school in preparation for a day of gardening, clearing scrub, weeding and cleaning kindergarten equipment. A bus load of students were taken to Ata Maheno Way where they accessed the Paradise Shores Dune area and assisted the bream Bay Coastal Care Trust with their restoration project there. DOC representatives were present to advise students on safe proceedings in the work and much sawing and lopping of wattles and non indigenous scrub took place. Students worked enthusiastically especially at the beginning and just as energies were beginning to wane, they were revived by partaking of the sausage sizzle courtesy of the B.B. Coastal Care Trust. Then it was back to school for a swim in the school pool before heading home. The Whare Gardens at the college itself was another focal point and huge gains were made that day in tackling the weeds and then mulching the area once it was cleared. There is still work to be done on this project and it is hoped that some of the students who missed out on Community Service Day, because they were off on school electives, will be able to contribute some time before the end of term.Other groups of students spent the Community Service Day at Bream Bay Kindergarten and Bream Bay Educare where kindy equipment was scrubbed down and tidying and weeding was carried out. The group of students allocated to assist the new

store owners at One Tree Point were able to trim and tidy the gardens in front of the store much to the grateful surprise of the new owners. Students from the Bilingual class Relationships between school and community have been forged and it was felt by all that Community Service Day was a very worthwhile innovation and one that Bream Bay College intends to continue.

Do you want Industry on Steroids? “Do you want industry on steroids – that’s what you have at the moment or do you want a more balanced mix of industrial and residential areas?” planner Leigh Joffe asked at the a Whangarei District Council presentation on a proposed new structure plan for the Ruakaka/One Tree Point area at the Ruakaka Recreation Centre held on Wednesday 3 December. Mr. Joffe, who worked on an earlier Ruakaka/OTP Structure Plan, (adopted in 2000) was employed by the developer Oliver Scott to write a new plan for the Ruakaka /One Tree Point area.

to a neighbourhood shopping centre. Mr. Joffe said it was unsustainable to continue to develop along the “fragile coastal area.” The new plan proposed that development be restricted to the east of Marsden Point Rd. He also argues that there is not enough space at the Ruakaka Town Centre for “large footprint retail outlets”.

the Takahiwai Stream would not be able to cope with all the stormwater from the proposed new urban centre. You cannot use them for stormwater disposal. Margaret said that even putting fresh water into a saltwater stream was pollution and destroying the ecosystem would interfere with the food supply of shorebirds. Leigh Joffe – “A woman after my own heart. I have sympathy with what you are saying totally but if it comes down to me being able to feed and a dotterel being able

be another baby born in the world. Sex is going on. People are being born.” Bart De Ruiter from Takahiwai asked if a risk analysis had been done of the area, in particular, on the risk of tsunami. Councillor Phil Halse said the newly formed Ruakaka Civil Defence group had done some work on this and had a map showing where the tsunami risk was.David Lourie said, “You are talking about a town or city that will be here for the

Wouldn’t it just make more sense to build the new city up in the hills?” Mr. Joffe replied, “If sea levels rise by 20 metres then I would be more worried

Mr. De Ruiter also asked about the amount of peat that would need to be excavated and disposed of before the proposed new town centre could be built. Mr. Joffe said there were sections of peaty land where the proposed town centre is sited.“But People have been living in the area for years.’He said that although there might be some carbon discharge from the peat excavation this would not be on the same scale as 6,000 to 10,000 cars transporting people to work in Marsden Point industries each day. Ruj Gabagat said the draft structure plan showed a road going right through the house where he had lived for the past 20 years. He asked how he could get the route of this proposed road moved. Paul Dell the Council’s Environmental Services Manager said the draft structure plan was a “visual plan not a subdivision plan and the time to remove the road running through Mr. Gabagat’s home would be when a subdivision was being proposed there.

Ruakaka area in isolation. She said she lived on the western side of SH1 and this was a high growth area with many more houses being built here in the last seven

years. Many people were choosing to live on lifestyle blocks and were able to work from home using the Internet. Also people from Waipu used the Ruakaka Town Centre for services. Children from Waipu and the area west of the highway attended Bream Bay College and people shopped, used the medical centres and the Westpac bank in Ruakaka. The proposed new town centre at One Tree Point would mean all these people would have to drive further down One Tree Point Rd. for these services. Mr. Dell said if growth is as rapid west of the highway as Marilyn said it was by the time the McEwan Rd. town centre is built, the area west of SH1 could have its own shopping centre. Mr. Joffe said,” If you are planning a garden, should you also be planning the neighbour’s garden as well.” Warren Daniels asked that there would be more time for scrutiny of the plan before submissions closed on it. He also said that many people had been frustrated because just one copy of the Draft Structure Plan was available to the public at the Ruakaka Council Service Centre.

Northpine is about to start testing its new kiln drying facilities at its Waipu plant and hopes to begin commissioning the new plant at the end of January 2009. Consents for the boiler and kilns were granted three years ago but the company, in the interim, purchased a processing plant at Silverdale and has been using this facility to produce dry frame timber from Northland grown pine milled at Waipu. Eight months ago work began on the new drying facility at Waipu. Company Director Bruce Larsen said,” Unfortunately the world has changed on us since then. It’s a three million dollar project, which is pretty big for a small privately owned company like ours. Sales have slowed down and it’s a real struggle at the moment.”

will be created at Waipu and eventually as many as 14 new jobs would result from the new plant. As part of its Resource Consent conditions, Northpine is required to set up a Community Liaison Committee to assist the Northland Regional Council in the management, monitoring and supervision of the consent. The Resource

the committee is to consist of one representative from Northpine, one from the NRC and one from the Waipu Community.

Ratepayers Association will be asked to choose the community representative.Rosemary Neave has been appointed as the independent Chairperson of the Committee, and

Rosemary, who is soon to return from a four-month overseas trip, emails, ”I am excited about being involved in this project, and to assist the community to be engaged with Northpine in its expansion and development. Waipu needs strong local employers such as Northpine, and Northpine needs a strong relationship with the community - the Liaison Committee will provide a structure to enable this relationship to thrive, which can only be good news for Waipu”

on our predicted log exports. Considering we have been through the winter and coming into summer which is our busier time that is not too bad”, said Mr. Moore. In fact with the closure of two Carter Holt mills in the middle of the north island the Carter Holt mill in Whangarei is now busier and sending more product out through the port. The Kaitaia triboard and veneer plant is still exporting to Japan and the Philippines and logs are still being shipped out to China, Japan and occasionally India.“Because we are not a container port and don’t handle retail goods we haven’t been as badly effected by the economic downturn as other places”, said Mr. Moore. He said he expects the next six months would give a clearer picture of which way the world will go in terms of the recession.

The Waipu Carol Service this year is being held on 21st December at 8.p.m.at The Presbyterian Church.Over the years this event has been a well attended ritual for not only the locals, but also for Singers and Musicians from Whangarei and around the North. This year it will be accompanied by many of the orchestra from the production of Cats held ear-lier this year. Some of the cast of this production, plus members from Opera North, and the Otamatea Repertory Theatre are all helping the locals to swell the numbers for the singing of these rousing carols.Amongst the Soloists will be 3 of Joan Kennaway’s pupils who have recently per-

-ris [who has just moved to Waipu].Although seating can sometimes be at a premium, the Church would like to encour-age late arrivals and those with young Children to bring a rug, refreshments and picnic on the lawn outside and hear their favourite Carols through the sound system

It means we can do our major fundraising on that one day and we are not asking parents to be always out there on stalls.”Warren has been involved in scouting since he was a boy. There are also a number of national schools, which children who are part of

And there are regional courses where children are taught scouting skills such as bushcraft.“It’s a shame, these boys are having fun but it’s hard to organise games and plan camps when there are so few,” says assistant leader Eileen Turner.Eileen said she knows there are local children in the Keas 6 -8 years and cubs 8 – 10 years age group who would like to join the scouting movement but adults are needed to take on the role of leaders. Eileen sees re-establishing the Cubs and Keas as an important step to strengthening the scout group. We need these young ones coming through to feed into the scouts”, she said. We had our Christmas party and last meeting for the year on the 20th November. The theme was “Country and Western” and with Des Chitty entertaining us and withso many members dressed for the part, it looked like a line-dancing class. There was a lot of “ hooting and hollering” and everyone had a great time. The fancy dress competition was won by Lorraine Sumich, June Stewart was runner-up and LynnSmith was 3rd and the “most comical” was Diana Morgan. The Christmas Posytable decoration contest was won by Marilyn Bennett with Jean Dyer 2nd, all entrieswere taken to Ranburn.

Moody. Our next meeting will be on February 19th 2009 at 1pm at the Ruakaka Hall, Cnr Sandford Rd & SH1 RUAKAKA.Flower of the month Dahlia and Decorative “Harvest Time”New members and visitors are always welcome but regrettably meetings are not suitable for children. For more information phone Maureen Donaldson 09 432 0586 or Barbara Tuirner 09 433 0389

Sign to nowhereAmongst the new speed signs going up at all the vehicle entrances to the beach along the Bream Bay Coastline informing people about the new 30km per hour speed restriction for driving on the beach, is this one at the entrance to a Whangarei District Council Reserve of Bream Bay Drive. The road these signs stand to either side of allows cars to drive ap-proximately 20 metres before being blocked by a fence. Is this a reason why it might be a good idea to employ a local person for general maintenance work in Bream Bay?

Let’s get it sorted for ChristmasWe’re making a few changes to our collections during Christmas week, so we can allow our team to spend Christmas Day with their families. The key changes are:1. No collections on Christmas Day.2. The usual Thursday collection will be split over two days:

• Rubbish and recycling for Mangakahia Road, from Maungatapere to Twin Bridges and all side roads, will be collected on Friday 26 December.• Rubbish and recycling for Parihaka, Onerahi and Whangarei Heads Road through to the Pataua turnoff, will be collected on Saturday 27 December.

3. The usual Friday collections (Morningside, Raumanga and Maunu) will take place on Saturday 27 December.4. The ReSort and all Transfer Stations are closed on Christmas Day.

Extra Coastal CollectionsCoastal areas will have rubbish and recycling collected twice-weekly, starting on Monday 22nd December. These collections will continue right throughout January.• Northern Coast areas will have their usual collection on Monday, and a second collection on Friday.• The Bream Bay Coast will have their usual collection on Tuesday, and a second collection on Saturday.

Please help us on collection day...• Have your rubbish and recycling out by 7.30am.• Use an official Whangarei District rubbish bag (now available in two sizes). If you use your own bag, you must put an official rubbish sticker on it.• Wrap any sharp objects before placing them in the rubbish bag.

Recycle!• All recyclables (except for paper) should be placed in an official recycle bin. Flatten tins and plastic bottles to fit more into your recycle bin.• Paper should be tied in a bundle or put in a cardboard box (tied or taped closed) and put beside your recycle bin.• Flatten and fold cardboard so that it is no larger than your recycle bin.

Remember:• Official rubbish bags and stickers are sold at most dairies, supermarkets and service stations.• Oversized bags (more than 65-litres) will not be collected.• If you have too much for rubbish day, Re:Sort and transfer stations will be open daily except on Christmas Day.

They accept recyclables (free), vegetation (half-price) and rubbish in any quantity.• Litter bins are provided on streets and beaches for visitors to use. They are emptied daily where possible.

Please do not fill street and beach litter bins with your household rubbish.

The members of the Marsden Garden Club are mourning the sudden death of one of their most knowledgeable and active members. Georgie Gardner was a past president of the club (from 2002 – 2004) a member of the judging panel which assessed exhibits at monthly meetings

Georgie was also a regular volunteer at Scavengers Recycling shop. Jean said she regarded Scavengers as her “reason for getting up in the morning and doing,” after her husband died.“She loved the fun and the curiosity of it. You never know what is going to turn up at Scavengers”, said Jean.“She loved her garden. She had boundless energy and

began to focus on roses and imported new varieties from overseas breeders. They also opened two garden centre outlets – one in Levin and a second in Papatoetoe in south Auckland. Towards the end of the 1970s they sold this business to their son Willie, and moved to a 117 - acre property an abandoned dairy farm,on the Waikare inlet in the Bay of Islands. There was no road access to this land, which

acres of this land they established a garden which they used as a quarantine area for imports of subtropical plants, for which they travelled to sub - tropical regions

of their efforts. Upon reaching retirement age, Georgie and Phil sold this property and moved to a house with an undeveloped section in Ruakaka. They spent several years travelling New Zealand in a campervan, as always looking at plants and gardens, and then settled down to establish a garden at their new home, re-establishing some of the sub-tropical plants they had collected. Phil died in 2000.In recent years Georgie visited Rarotonga each May

Her good friend Jean Acheson described how on a

Matakana and on Waiheke Island, whenever they came across an unusual plant, members would be looking around for Georgie to tell them what it was. Georgie wasn’t on this trip as she was in Auckland Hospital undergoing a triple bi-pass heart operation.“We all expected her to recover. She phoned me at 8am on the day before she died asking if I could be her caregiver while she recovered. I told her that would be a great pleasure”, said Jean.

This year’s Bream Bay Sports Awards held at the ruakaka Recreation Centre on Saturday 6 December were a bit like last year’s awards. As happened last year the most hotly contested trophy was for junior sportsperson of the year, as at last year’s awards there were some pretty impressive lists of achievements by Bream Bay’s junior sports men and women this award and the winner was once again squash player Abbie Palmer of Waipu. This year Abbie’s achievements include beating 26 players from 16 conutries to win a world under 11 years title in Kuala Lumper in Malaysia and the under 11 Penang international title. Abbie ended the 2008 season as both NZ’s number 1 ranked under 11player for the 4th year in a row and is now also the Number 1 ranked under 13 years player. League player Errol Lee who has just won a three year contract to the Canterbury Bulldogs NRL Club was another nominee. Errol won the ASB Secondary Schools Rugby League Award for 2008. He captained the new Zealand Under 15s Rugby League Team and was awarded the Stacey Jones Cup for the Most Outstanding Under 15s New Zealand player at the Under 15s tournament of 2008.

• Chris Smith who scored 11 tries for his JB7 rugby team last season and is Bream Bay College junior squash champion for the third year in a row. Chis has been invited to join the Northland Junior Development Squash Squad and the School of Emerging Talent. • Nicky Roberts who was selected in the New Zealand team for the Oceania karate Championships held in Auckland in September – the youngest person ever to be selected to represent New Zealand at senior international competition. She came second in the junior Women’s Kata and third in the senior Women Kata at this event. • Kelsey Power, a year 10 student at Bream Bay College, who is currently the Northland Senior Secondary School’s tennis champion, the Northland under 18 years champion and a member of the Northland Junior Development Squad. Kelsey is also a member of the Netball North Under 18 high performance squad and was vice captain of the Waipu Gold Collegiate netball team which won the best Bream Bay junior team award. This team was named this year’s best all round team in Whangarei for 2008.

Anna Berthelson, the female member of an adventure

Bream Bay sportsperson of the year. Fiona Fogden who accepted the award on behalf of Anna (who is on a cycling trip in South America) said she has a full time job at the Ruakaka NIWA aquaculture

“Sometimes she is out at 4.30 am in the morning running then kayaks in the evening just to get her training in. In the weekend she spends long hours on her bike.”Also this year the Orion team Anna belongs to has

and China winning placings at all these events. Anna also came 4th in the open women’s section of this year’s Coast to Coast longest day race.

Kelsey Power accepted the best junior team award for her Waipu Gold Collegiate netball team.

Bream Bay United’s First Division soccer team won the senior team of the year award. This team had a slow start but developed as the season progressed and despite placing mid table in the league, made the knockout plate

United team has done this. Although losing this game 2 -1 to FC Whangarei BBU fought back hard in the second half of the game and was unlucky not to score.

Toni Power won the Services to Sport Award. Toni, who

teams, was chosen as this year’s Whangarei Netball Coach of the year . She has been a senior umpire for the past 10 years and a rep umpire for the past 8 years. She has also coached Whangarei representative teams for the past 10 years and is a member of the Whangarei Netball Committee.

Shona Fogden won the Master Sportsperson award after a busy year competing in a number of multisport, mountain bike, triathlon and running events, the highlight of these winning the woman’s vet section in a 10km off road run in Chamoni, France in June. Shona’s friend Kerry Lomas said when the pair went on holiday together she always had to carry the bike tools as Shona had already reached the weight limit for luggage with her bike. When they got to the hotel, Shona would be setting up her bike in the living area of their room and instead of going shopping and lying on a beach “like normal people” she would go out on long bike rides.

Swimming coach Richard Dunkerton, or Mr. D as he is known by young swimmers, won the Sports Administrator of the year award. Mr D has been a swimming coach in Northland for the past 35 years.

This number has now risen to 47 and the Bream Bay Club won the Lion trophy at the Anne of Craicor swim carnival in Kawakawa on 29 November 2008 after winning a medley relay race which involved 20 swimmers aged from under 10 year olds to under 20 year olds.

Mr. Dell said that he had already made an extra copy of this document available at the Takutai Place service centre but as each copy cost $150 to produce the council was unlikely to supply one to every resident in Ruakaka and One Tree Point. He told the meeting that the document is available on line on the council’s wdc.govt.

Members of the public have until Thursday 19 February 2009 to give the council feedback on the new structure plan proposal. Asked by the Bream Bay News about the council’s time line for formal adoption of the new structure plan Mr. Dell replied, “We are still to detail the exact timing post submissions. I would however expect the SP to have been signed off by June 2009.

The second annual Tartan in the Park competition will be held in conjunction with the Waipu Highland Games on January 1 in the Caledonian Park. Katrine McLean, who organises the competition, said the idea came from her daughter Rhona McLean as a means of promoting the use of tartan in

“We got permission from the Caledonian Society to stage it at the Highland Games last year and it was deemed successful enough that they have asked us to make it an annual event.” “It is supposed to be a fun competition so anyone can enter provided they are wearing something tartan but we would like to encourage a bit of ingenuity

There are four categories: men and women and boys and girls up to 14 years of age. Winners and runners up are chosen in each. Prizes have been donated by businesses in Whangarei, Mangawhai, Wellsford and

Knowledge of the tartan used, style and originality and grooming and deportment are the criteria for judging.

When her shoulders start to ache she knows it is time to pack up for the day. “You need good hand eye co-ordination and to be very still and steady.” It is a complex business. Each bead needs a clay base so it can be removed from

Different coloured glass has different chemical properties, which can react when

evenly and constantly to keep its shape. Sometimes Karen uses dichroic glass, which changes colours with the angle of the light and another of her trademark techniques involves incorporating foil in the bead. Both the foil and the dichroic glass burn easily so it has taken some practice to master their use. Karen makes a variety of jewellery pieces but her favourite, one she produces

My colour instincts are blue and blue greens but sometimes I make myself use reds and browns. I think I have only made about three yellow beads this year.”

They really help.” She belongs to the International Society of Glass Bead Makers and the New ZealandSociety of Glass Bead Artists. It’s an old old craft dating back as far as Mesopotamia 2340-2180 BC.
